![]() | Quietly by Mouth of the Architect
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.94 breathtaking in their musicianship and sophistication, this band consumes any semblance of weakness and exhales pure energy in your face faCE FACE (which then awakens my inner monster-truck show announcer-guy)
![]() | Treny by Jacaszek
Buy new: $16.98 michal jacaszek has created a cinematic masterpiece of ambient electronic music similar in scope to deaf center's "pale ravine". one of the most haunting and beautifully rendered albums ever recorded. (yup, ever)

![]() | The Bedlam in Goliath by The Mars Volta
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.20 you either love these guys or you hate them, apparently. this is another relentless onslaught of staggering instrumentation and catchy (albeit odd) lyrics with brief moments of melodic reflection upon the bedlam they have lain at your feet.
![]() | Third by Portishead
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.23 yay! portishead is back and what a comeback! not really like anything they put out previously but somehow unmistakably portishead. this album is diverse and gorgeous for it - it's like they've decided to open their musical hearts for us to examine.
![]() | Eternal Kingdom by Cult of Luna
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.99 picked this up thanks to a recommendation from an amazon user who read my best of 2007 list. this band is similar to mouth of the architect and, therefore, awesome.
![]() | Rest by Gregor Samsa
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $8.90 tiny, lovable voices stretch themselves against simple notes that weave into layers of lulling instrumentation. (their best album is 55:12)
![]() | Maar by The Evpatoria Report
Buy new: $22.98 / Used from: $46.93 this band should be scoring films their music is very cinematic. they take their time building each track as if it were an immense structure meant to stand the test of time structures ultimately created for the gods, as is evidenced in celestial climaxes. also check out golevka.

![]() | Alegranza by El Guincho
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.79 lo-fi, silly, tropical dance tracks from a very strange man known as el guincho de tortilla.
![]() | Santogold by Santogold
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.19 santi white sang for philly punk band, stiffed, and i had the pleasure of seeing her live - i was captivated by her then and knew she was destined for greatness. reminiscent of m.i.a. and gwen stefani circa 1990s no doubt. i just hope she doesn't end up going down the same path gwen has taken...
![]() | Lagos Shake: A Tony Allen Chop Up by Various Artists
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $40.81 artists such as hypnotic brass ensemble, diplo and carl craig lend their stylings to afro-beat tracks from nigerian musician, tony allen, making for some damn danceable tracks.
![]() | Where Were U in 92? by Zomby
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $8.00 i was in grade school in '92 and, although already a huge music fan and receiver of numerous zines and underground music catalogs, i had yet to discover electronic music. this album makes me wish i had been cool enough in high school to have gone to the club, the batcave, or a rave. at least i can dance to this music now in my apartment while cleaning or pretending to work out.
![]() | Crystal Castles by Crystal Castles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.98 similar to cold cave in their dance-inducing technoness, but with a decidedly punk approach. i imagine hipsters everywhere will cling to this album like they cling to their trust funds and williamsburg zipcodes, but it's catchy and subversive so i can't help myself.
![]() | The Hawk Is Howling by Mogwai
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.39 another beautiful mogwai album lurks here... who the heck is maximilian hecker? (oh, he's some german dude)
![]() | A Perfect Place
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $9.49 i'm a long-standing member of the church of mike patton. this is his first film soundtrack and it has a big-band, jazz vibe, though unmistakably patton and sounds as though it literally comes to us from the past via some worm-hole in the space-time continuum. the cd comes with a dvd of the short film. (this filmmaker is a genius for getting patton to market his mediocre film in this way!)
![]() | Sweet Dogs
Buy new: $0.99 (this is also a single - the album, "couple therapy", is unavailable here) lush, jazz inspired vocals with swells of electronic beats, harmonica, piano - occasional rapping - an interesting combination of sounds making for a unique album you can relax or party to (a party involving wine that is).
![]() | A Thousand Lashes
Buy new: $0.99 i'm kind of cheating here - this is technically an 09 release but, coz i gotz connectionz, i've been singing along to it all year. it's a strawberry lemonade pool-party album that can deftly become your crackling fireplace, knit tea-cozy in the doldrums of winter. the lyrics are funny yet heartfelt & flutes and clarinets meld seamlessly into the indie pop mix. (pick up the album through itunes)

![]() | Vampire Weekend by Vampire Weekend
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.99 yes, i am a sucker
![]() | Insurgentes (CD & DVD) by Steven Wilson
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.99 this release seems equally inspired by david lynch as it does u2 - yes this is an odd combination but sometimes (and in this case) odd combinations produce harmonious results.
![]() | 1961 by Last Step
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $9.45 an electro-disco birthday cake from the past, still tasty after all these years, courtesy of aaron funk of venetian snares fame.
![]() | Alt-CTRL-Sleep by Alt-CTRL-Sleep
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $0.94 encourages floating away on a magic gram-cracker-carpet, cocooned in marshmallow fluff and drizzled with melted (but not in a way that can burn you) nutella into a world of delicious, gooey dreams that have nothing to do with the impending 2012 death of all existence as predicted by the mayans.
![]() | Detrimentalist by Venetian Snares
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $43.98 blippity-bleeps on atari-teenage-riot overdrive. i'm not a snares aficionado, but this album is encouraging me to dig through their archives. incidentally, this would be the album to listen to on december 21st 2012, when the world comes crashing down around us.
![]() | Gods of the Earth by The Sword
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.77 this super-charged rock album makes me feel like a viking. and feeling like a viking is great - although, sometimes it makes you curl up in a ball of guilt if you allow your thoughts to wander to the long legacy of brutality that comes with vikinghood - so try to focus on the intricate guitar riffs instead.
![]() | Crown Fire by Conifer
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.98 - i was surprised to learn this band has been around for 6 years. they have been referred to as "math-rock", whatever that means. their sound is refreshing and wide-ranging within the "post-rock"/metal genre and i highly recommend this album. check out their myspace page for some truly fantastical music journalist reviews, the likes of which i cannot touch.
![]() | Jersey Shores by Akimbo
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.14 being from a jersey shore town i was unsure whether to big-up these guys or regard them as "shoe bees". turns out they are from seattle and the album is about the shark attacks that took place in jersey in 1916. interesting album concept that adds a sense of dread to the guitar riffs and screaming vocals - reminiscent of mastodon.
![]() | Skin Turns to Glass by Nadja
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.46 looking at the cover artwork, you can see a lovely image or, cock your head the other way, a disturbing one. this is apropos of nadja's music - you will feel your skin turning to glass as you listen - an image at once frightening and beautiful.
![]() | Futuristically Speaking: Never Be Afraid by Yo Majesty
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.79 christian lesbians (?) getting crunk all over the past and the future. word.
![]() | Ty Segall by Ty Segall
Buy used from: $15.00 vocals resurrected from the '50s croon over the grungy, surf-rock guitar and pounding drums of ty's one-man band.
![]() | Tori/Neji by Nisennenmondai
Buy new: $37.98 / Used from: $14.50 a bang on cans, post-noise-rock band from japan. (i just made up the term, "post-noise-rock")
![]() | No-Miso Shortcake by Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re
adorable pop vocals supported by a rocking band. the crowning glory is the last track - a punk sing-along in japanese replete with "oi"s!
![]() | The Sparrow and the Crow by William Fitzsimmons
Buy used from: $3.19 songs inspired by a divorce are heartbreaking, yet so much truth and beauty can arise from tragedy. william fitzsimmons is a testament to this phenomenon with his simple yet poignant acoustic guitar & vocals driven album. (will 14 years be enough?)
