Best Drones
By an Amazon.com customer
Earth 2Earth 2 by Earth
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $5.94
Every drone metal band you hear these days owes everything to Earth. They took Sabbath-style doom sludge and slowed it down even more.
Pentastar: In the Style of DemonsPentastar: In the Style of Demons by Earth
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.10
Most underrated Earth album. Takes patience to get in to, but it's very good.
Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal MethodHex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method by Earth
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.96
The return of Earth! But they've changed. Now they sound like they're scoring westerns. And it's awesome.
The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's SkullThe Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull by Earth
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $12.20
One of my favorite albums of the past year. Not really a metal album, but very cool if you're a fan of Ennio Morricone. Vinyl version has an awesome bonus track.
Flight of the BehemothFlight of the Behemoth by Sunn O)))
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.44
Black One may be their masterpiece, but I probably listen to this one more. It's just crazy awesome.
White1White1 by Sunn O)))
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.70
Sunn getting darker. Flawed, but very solid.
White2White2 by Sunn O)))
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $5.93
As you'd probably guess, this picks up where White1 left off. It's a better set of songs, though.
Black OneBlack One by Sunn O)))
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.99
Like I said, it's their masterpiece. Ultra-dark, ultra-heavy, ultra-slow.
Monoliths & DimensionsMonoliths & Dimensions by Sunn 0)))
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $8.25
I thought Black One would be their crowning achievement, but this one is incredible.
Amplifier WorshipAmplifier Worship by Boris
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $27.36
Music that climbs to mountainous hights, but it takes its time getting there.
Two HuntersTwo Hunters by Wolves in the Throne Room
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.44
USBM is more about drone and shoegaze then 90s black metal was, and these guys exemplify this best.
ConquerorConqueror by Jesu
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.35
Not as dark as the Southern Lord brand of drone metal.
Radiance of ShadowsRadiance of Shadows by Nadja
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.29
If you've never heard Nadja before, you definately need to hear what all the fuss is about. Intense, dark, but beautiful.
Skin Turns to GlassSkin Turns to Glass by Nadja
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.49
Almost as good as Radiance.
PyramidsPyramids by Pyramids
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.98
Mysterious band from Texas. If Radiohead was a shoe gaze band and used a raging, out-of-control drum machine, they would be Pyramids.
A Hole Is TrueA Hole Is True by Double Leopards
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $2.99
Dark, noisey drone music. Not as intense as their other stuff.
At All EndsAt All Ends by Yellow Swans
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.68
Maybe my personal favorite on this list. Noise duo made a quieter album (until the end, atleast) that flows like a post-rock album.
Sky's Run into the SeaSky's Run into the Sea by Growing
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.74
Very good, but mostly forgotten, debut.
Soul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of LightSoul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of Light by Growing
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.65
Favorite Growing album. Overpowering.
All the WayAll the Way by Growing
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.69
They use less drones these days. Great album, though.
Tired Sounds of Stars of the LidTired Sounds of Stars of the Lid by Stars of the Lid
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $22.05
Double album of ambient drones. Kind of sad and mournful, very pretty.
Refinement of the DeclineRefinement of the Decline by Stars of the Lid
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $41.52
Another double album. Diverse, emotional.
Lambent MaterialLambent Material by Eluvium
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $10.33
One of the most acclaimed albums of the decade (despite a 6.2 from Pitchfork). I love synth drones. A very warm album.
Talk Amongst the TreesTalk Amongst the Trees by Eluvium
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.98
More interesting. Kind of mysterious, even a little dark at times.
CopiaCopia by Eluvium
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.49
Utilizes more piano and other instruments, so there's less drones. But when they do pop up (like towards the end of "Requiem for Time Feelers") it's stunning.
OMNSOMNS by Lichens
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.79
Sometimes difficult, usually elegant and comforting.
Tape ChantsTape Chants by Gregg Kowalsky
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.00
Yet another one from Kranky, this one built out of tape loops, feedback, and synths.
First Light's FreezeFirst Light's Freeze by Castanets
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.06
One of my personal favorites. He's a folk musician who employs subtle drones.
OVOV by Orthrelm
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.88
Loud, heavy, and minimalist drone metal.
AnnwnAnnwn by Ocrilim
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $2.77
Way less accessible than Orthrelm (both the work of Mick Barr) but arguably more rewarding. Basically just an hour of pretty abrasive shredding that forms one huge malestorm of sound.
