![]() | Hammerheart by Bathory
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $62.17 Bathory took the Viking-theme to a new level with more mature and intelligent songs, it's a legendary Swedish band that has influenced alot of European bands. The songs on this album are all slow, majestic and powerful but still with a certain rawness.
![]() | Twilight of the Gods by Bathory
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $9.44 More of the same, but this album has better sound-quality. The songs are slow, majestic and powerful. I am amazed that this album still sounds so fresh even after 18 years ! Very few bands can make such a claim.
![]() | Blood on Ice by Bathory
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $45.32 This is a later album, based on Norse-mythology, it has a rawer sound than the above two but still has that majestic and powerful feel to it.
There's some fantastic melodies and singing on this album.
For some reason it always makes me think of the Conan the Barbarian films, it's a perfect soundtrack to them.
![]() | Spirit of the Forest by Korpiklaani
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $13.43 This is a folk-metal band from Finland, they successfully combine folk and metal.
Their songs are usually about drinking and such, with titles like 'vodka' and 'happy little boozer'. Their music is not serious, it's fun, well-made and entertaining.
All their albums sound very similar so I wont list them all.
![]() | Serenades by Anathema
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.37 British doom-metal band, well at least their earlier albums such as this one. This is one of my favorite doom albums, it has longer tracks interspersed by short atmospheric pieces.
![]() | Hindsight by Anathema
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.99 Not sure if this is technically 'metal', but together with Serenades it's their two best albums...'Angelica' has to be one of the best songs I've ever heard.
![]() | Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $12.36 Swedish doom-band with operatic singing, four fantastic albums I recommend are: epicus doomicus, ancient dreams, tales of creation, nightfall. They are all worth buying if you want something unique. It's heavy and has great singing.

![]() | Fleischwald by Totenmond
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $2.87 German band, singing in German. This is their best album, not as fast as their other ones but much rawer and brutal-sounding. I call it sledgehammer-deathmetal.
![]() | Slania by Eluveitie
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.86 Swiss band that combines deathmetal with folk elements: flute, violins etc. They manage to stay deathmetal even though they have these folk-bits. Energetic and atmospheric music. I like all their albums.
![]() | Sideshow Symphonies by Arcturus
Buy new: $10.98 / Used from: $4.83 Norwegian band, used to be blackmetal but has switched to more orchestral sounding metal with "clean" singing ( i.e. no screeching ). Very solid album: good singing, melodies and energy.
![]() | To the Nameless Dead by Primordial
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.00 Irish band that also started out as black metal, they switched to Pagan-metal instead. Except for one song, there's no screeching vocals anymore just clean singing.
The music still sounds like blackmetal, like the slower Satyricon songs, but combined with this is alot of acoustic and atmospheric parts.
It's a very solid album, some slow songs some fast.
![]() | Red on Chrome by Crowpath
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $2.23 Swedish death metal band, they have a very unique sound that not everyone likes: it's chaotic, technical and unstructured.
I call their style de-structuralized deathmetal.
![]() | Indecent & Obscene by Dismember
Buy used from: $7.55 Swedish deathmetal, this is their best album, classic Scandinavian deathmetal.
'Dreamin in red' has to one of the best deathmetal songs ever made.
![]() | Om by Negura Bunget
Buy new: $39.99 / Used from: $19.20 Romanian pagan-metal band, they sound like blackmetal combined with very unique folk and atmospheric bits. It's a very original band: they follow a philosophy called Transylvanian Spiritualism, and sing in an almost-extinct Romanian dialect. If you want something original and unusual this band is worth checking up, but start with this albums.
![]() | Sumerian Daemons by Septic Flesh
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $9.50 Greek orchestral and occult deathmetal with songs based on mythology. I wanted to list their earlier albums like 'esoptron' but they are ridiculously expensive here so there's little point in listing them. But this album is very similar to the older ones, I didn't like 'Communion' much.
![]() | Mein Rasend Herz by In Extremo
Buy used from: $20.39 German metal band that combines medieval music with metal, they sing in German. This is my favorite of theirs. Very atmospheric albums - a fun blend of bagpipes, accordion and metal that never gets over-the-top "folky".
![]() | Spheres by Pestilence
Buy new: $17.97 / Used from: $12.24 Death metal from the Netherlands, this was a ground-breaking album that combined deathmetal with jazz-inspired progressive parts. It's a really intelligent album, the songs deal with Jungian psychology. Not everyone likes this album, but it's my most frequently played deathmetal album, it never gets old or boring.
![]() | Negation by Decapitated
Buy used from: $45.32 Polish old-school deathmetal, if you like well-played old-school deathmetal of the likes of Immolation you'll really like this band.

Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.70 classic Swedish deathmetal album.
![]() | Odium by Morgoth
Buy used from: $49.95 German deathmetal, I really like this album, they went away from their old-school sound to a more industrial and technical sound. One of my favorite deathmetal albums. The lyrics are also abit more "intelligent" than what you would normally encounter in deathmetal, they deal more with personal and societal issues.
![]() | Wildhoney/Gaia by Tiamat
Buy used from: $34.16 brilliant and ground-breaking Swedish progressive metal album, very hard to classify this album: atmospheric metal.
