![]() | Southern Storm by Krisiun
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.87 One hell of a Modern Death Metal album. Lightning fast riffs mixed with super heavy drum work guarantees that you won't be able to resist headbanging. The other great thing about this album is they don't just blast ya to death on every song. They mix in some mid-paced stomps as well as some awesome Testament like shred fests.

![]() | Vertebrae by Enslaved
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.84 I love the progressive sound these guys produce but with each release Grutle's Black Metal vocals become more of a distraction than anything. Don't get me wrong, I think Grutle's Black Metal screams are top notch but they just don't seem to belong in the new music they are making. Just my opinion but it was enough for them to finaly get thrown off of my top 40 list.

![]() | Dominion VIII by Grave
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.97 Great Swedish Death Metal album. I still pefer Dismember's new album when it comes to Old School Death Metal in 2008. This album is still a must buy!
![]() | Hammer Battalion by Unleashed
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $6.45 Great Death Metal album but I found the songwriting to be very weak. Yes, we know you guys hate Jesus! Please find another subject matter or at least make it interesting. Besides the lyrics I really enjoyed this album.
![]() | Apocalyptic Feasting by Brain Drill
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.48 Very punishing Death Metal album. Too bad it had some stiff competition this year which kept it from making my top 40. Worth your money if you enjoy a brutal slab of modern Death Metal.
![]() | And We Wept the Black Ocean Within by A Storm of Light
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $10.05 I am still very new to the Drone/Doom subgenre but I would have to say this is a very enjoyable album. The one part that kept it from being great for me was the very poor vocal performace.
![]() | Heimgang by Kampfar
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.99 Very consistant Folk flavored Black Metal band. A very solid release that even has the potential to creep its way up into my top 40.
![]() | The Unsettling Dark by Martriden
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.83 Really hard band to catagorize since they hail from the US. They mix what sounds like Melodic Death Metal with Symphonic Black Metal. Kick azz album that deserves the attention.
![]() | Iconoclast (Part One: The Final Resistance) by Heaven Shall Burn
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.95 I hate to use the word "Metalcore" since this is actually a pretty enjoyable album but you just can't help but pick out the more Hardore parts. If you are Death Metalhead and have an open mind, you should check it out.
![]() | Fury and Flames by Hate Eternal
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.71 Great slab of Modern Death Metal. It is just a shame that it had to come out at the same time as albums from Dismember, Krisiun, Gojira and many more.
![]() | Unspoken King by Cryptopsy
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $4.63 Everyone should know why this does not deserve to make it in the top picks in 2008 but I will say that it has a couple of brutal sections that kick azz.
![]() | Assassins: Black Meddle, Pt.1 by Nachtmystium
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.98 Interesting twist on the typical Black Metal sound. Great album.
![]() | Kolossus by Keep of Kalessin
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.74 Great album but way to much use of melodic guitar work for it to really impress me. I loved the vocal work but the music just did not seem to follow the dark feeling of the album.
![]() | Oblivion Beckons by Byzantine
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.84 "And They Shall Take Up Serpents" was such an unbelievable album that it was difficult for them to top it. "Oblivion Beckons" is a great Thrash album on its own but when campared to their earlier release it is a clear step backwards.
![]() | Death Prevails by Hackneyed
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $2.53 Debut album from this young Death Metal band. With a little time and effort these guys may be one of those bands you need to keep an eye on.
![]() | Obzen by Meshuggah
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.50 I am not a huge fan of Meshuggah. I find the vocals to be way too monotone to keep me interested. I did like the heavyness of the album but thats about it.
![]() | A Sense of Purpose by In Flames
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.93 When everyone hated "Come Clarity" I actually really enjoyed it so when I heard about this ablum I figured it would be the same way. This album I maybe tried to listen to twice and after that I have not touched it. Very disappointed in the direction they took with this album.
![]() | Ample Fire Within by Ascend
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.98 Very similar to "A Storm Of Light" but more enjoyable. Check it out.
![]() | Demonic Art by Darkane
Buy new: $26.98 / Used from: $16.99 "Layers Of Lies" was a hard album to beat plus they added a new vocalist so they had two strikes before they even started recording this album. They did an excelent job, I just wish the new vocalist would not try so hard to copy Andreas's sound.
![]() | Dystopia by Beneath the Massacre
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.48 I will have to start by saying that I thought their last album was worthless. Not a single song stuck out. This time around I think they did a great job of making an album with songs that can stand out of the crowd (Listen to "Our Common Grave). The only part keeping it from my top 40 is the excessive use of breakdowns. It might grow on me though.
![]() | We Are the Nightmare by Arsis
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.10 These guys really made a great album this year. For me this album seems to be riding the middle ground too much. It is not quite heavy enough to satisfy my Death Metal needs and not quite melodic enough to satisfy my softer side.
![]() | Baldr ok Iss by Helrunar
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.33 Great Folk influenced Black Metal. Has its strong and weak moments.
![]() | Inevitable Collapse in the Presence of Conviction by Soilent Green
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.94 Takes a bit to get used too if you listen to other Death Metal bands regularly but once you get warmed up it is a great album.
![]() | An Overdose of Death... by Toxic Holocaust
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.74 Great piece of Blackened Thrash Metal. Several of the songs sound too similar to each other to really keep it up in the top 40 of the year.
![]() | Twilight Ritual by Deadbird
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $15.18 I am pretty new to the whole Sludge/Doom sub genre. I found this album very enjoyable even though I thought the mixing could have been a bit better. The vocals seemed to be way to far back in the mix.
![]() | Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder by Cradle of Filth
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.39 I have never truly been a big fan of Cradle Of Filth. With that said I found this album to be a bit more enjoyable than their past couple of releases. It is by no means at the top of the Symphonic Black Metal list this year but it has some good moments.
![]() | Kaoskult by Helheim
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.00 This is my first album from Helheim. They seem to mix Black Metal with a bit of Viking Metal attitude. It is a very interesting mix that helps it stand out a bit but still not enough to be in my top 40 of the year. Worth your time and money.
![]() | Revelations of Reckoning Day by Iskald
Your typical modern Black Metal album with very crystal clear production and sound. There is nothing horribly wrong with this album it just lacks the memorable riffs and songs that the Black Metal Elite have on each release.
![]() | The Incurable Tragedy by Into Eternity
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.95 These guys always seem to release solid material. Sadly, their last great album was "Buried Into Oblivion" in 2004. On this album Stu Block seems to be trying way to hard to show the world his vocal range. At points he sounds like a chain smoking, 12 year old girl that just had her foot crushed by a Semi-trailor.
![]() | Antithesis by Origin
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.98 I highly enjoy this brutal slab of Death Metal. Very exhausting listen when a band plays that fast and hard for that long. Some may have to break this album up into several listens.
![]() | For the Revolution by Kalmah
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $11.43 Great Melodic Death Metal album. "The Black Waltz" just could not keep me interested so I was worried that this one would do the same. Boy was I wrong!
![]() | Dark Thrones & Black Flags by Darkthrone
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.95 Great continuation of the Punk influenced Black N Roll that we saw on F.O.A.D. Great riffs, Dark vocals and Classic Darkthrone Production, what is their not to like? You may be surprised to hear what sounds like the introduction of some slightly clean vocals in a couple of tracks. Great Stuff.
![]() | Face The Colossus [Explicit]
Buy new: $8.99 Think "Natural Born Chaos" era Soilwork but with a different vocalist. Pretty crushing album if it was not for the very poor clean singing parts. I am all for mixing up the vocals but the dude just is not good at clean singing in my opinion. Hopefully these guys keep working on their sound cause they could make a pretty big splash with some time and effort.
![]() | Cannibalised by Biomechanical
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.78 This album was actually at one point one of the most anticipated albums of the year for me. "The Empires Of The World" was a outstanding debut and showcased a band with a very unique sound. Instead of growing and maturing the sound though they kinda went stale. What we have here is still a great album but almost a step back when compared to their debut.
![]() | Get Dead or Die Trying by Rotted
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.00 Not as heavy as their material as Gorerotted but still a very good album. If you are a fan of Death Metal you will need to pick this one up.
![]() | La Voce Dei Morti
Buy new: $7.99 "Fantastic groove based Black Metal album from Malnatt. Their use of Folk influence has dropped when compared to their past releases but when it is used it is used right. If you enjoy the new Black N Roll style that seems to be catching on, then you will love this release."
![]() | Massive Conspiracy Against All Life by Leviathan
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.49 I was actually surprised that I enjoyed this release as much as I did. The slight step up in production value really help this stand apart from "Tentacles Of Whorror".
![]() | Rotting Paradise by Coldworker
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.64 "Band featuring past members of Nasum. There first release had more of a Grindcore feel to it while Rotting Paradise is more a straight up Death Metal album. Both releases are stellar and deserve your attention."
![]() | Gangrene by Mirrorthrone
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $38.03 Solo Symphonic Black Metal project. Great record that does not get much attention. I love the aggression but it lacked as a whole album to keep me interested.
![]() | Grim Tales by One Man Army and the Undead Quartet
Buy new: $26.98 / Used from: $53.16 I am so thankful that these guys finally got their act together. Their 2007 release "Error In Evolution" just plain sucked and was my dissapointment of the year. This album sees the band finally focusing back on the songwriting and at the same time bringing back some much needed heavyness. If you were a fan of "The Crown" you will definatly be happy to hear this album from Johan and company
