![]() | Opus Nocturne by Marduk
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.99 Of all the Black Metal bands, it is harder for me to just pick 2 releases from these guys. Every release has something to offer over the last. This ablum to me defines the 2nd Wave of Black Metal and should be considered one of the most important releases in the genre.
![]() | Rom 5:12 by Marduk
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.99 My second choice was between this album and Panzer Division Marduk. I ended up picking this one because the vocals from Mortuus are topnotch. Plus, this album is more than just a blastbeat fest like alot of albums during Legion's reign tend to be.
![]() | Morbid Fascination of Death by Carpathian Forest
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $7.27 The most diverse album in Carpathian Forest's catalog. This record does not have a single bad track. Be prepared to be taken on a journey like no other Black Metal album can.
![]() | F*** You All by Carpathian Forest
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.88 Your probably asking why I chose this album over "Shining Black Metal" or "Strange Old Brew"? Both of those records are similar in sound to Morbid Fascination so I wanted to showcase this album which offers a more Black N Roll sound to it that I love.
![]() | Dark Medieval Times by Satyricon
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $11.69 The album that opened my eyes to what Black Metal could be besides blastbeats and Satanic lyrics.
![]() | The Shadowthrone by Satyricon
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.80 Think Dark Medieval Times but heavier. In my opinion the best album in Satyricon's whole catalog. You will not be disappointed
![]() | Soulsaviour by V:28
Buy used from: $4.31 These guys might not be Black Metal traditionalists but they sure do know how to make great albums. The only band I have found so far that realy combine Industrial elements into Black Metal without compromising the music.
![]() | Violution
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $85.05 The latest release from these Industrial Black Metalers. On par if not better than Soulsaviour.
![]() | Pitch Black Brigade by Vreid
Buy new: $22.98 / Used from: $54.53 I don't care if this is considered Black N Roll cause it just plain kicks azz. All you have to do is listen to Pitch Black off of this album and you will see what I am talking about
![]() | I Krig by Vreid
Buy used from: $47.96 Very strong release by these guys. The production this time around is alot clearer which gives it a heavier tone. Not as good as Pitch Black Brigade but still 20 times better than alot of the crap that floods this genre.
![]() | Sheol by Naglfar
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.25 These guys are at the forefront of the Melodic Black Metal sub-genre. All of their releases are worth your money and time.
![]() | Pariah by Naglfar
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.91 My favorite album from these Melodic Black Metalers. If you don't enjoy tunes like "A Swarm Of Plagues" then there is no hope for you.
![]() | Scourge of Malice by Graveworm
Buy used from: $7.99 The perfect mix of Death and Black Metal. Most bands BLEND the two together which usually means one of the influences gets lost in the mix. Graveworm INCORPORATE the two like no other band can.
![]() | (N)utopia by Graveworm
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.39 Not only is this a very strong release, it also is a perfect example of how Graveworm have evolved from Scourge Of Malice. Give it a shot!
![]() | Below the Lights by Enslaved
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.26 One of the greatest Black Metal bands around. Haven't really gotten into their newer albums but their mid period Progression is awesome.
![]() | Monumension by Enslaved
Buy used from: $19.57 My current number 2 album from Enslaved. They change from month to month depending upon what kind of mood I am in. The vocal work from Grutle on this album is amazing and tends to be a bit deeper than his usual Black Metal shrieks.
![]() | A Blaze in the Northern Sky by Darkthrone
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $7.25 My personal favorite release from the Black Metal Duo. A good record to start with when exploring the roots of Black Metal
![]() | F.O.A.D. by Darkthrone
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $36.08 The peak of their punk injecting progression. The majority of the album is still Black Metal, just with a little more punk flavoring. Great release.
![]() | La Voce Dei Morti
Buy new: $7.99 Who knew Black Metal would sound so cool in Italian? This album does not have as many Folk influences as their other releases, which translates to a better album (at least for me). Good Stuff!
![]() | Happy Days
Buy new: $8.91 Both this album and 2005's "Carmina Pagana" are great Black Metal albums. I picked this one as my second favorite ablum since the only real trace of Folk influence is the use of female vocals here and there. In "Carmina Pagana" you will here quite a bit of folk instrumental passages. They are not horrible, just not really my thing. Great band that deserves more attention.
![]() | Mørke Gravers Kammer by Khold
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.00 Groovy, riff based Black Metal is the name of the game for this Norwegian Band. They have a very similar sound to another band on my list "Vried". You will also find some Darkthrone influences as well.
![]() | Krek by Khold
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $10.00 Have not been able to listen to this release all the way through yet but I am sure I will enjoy it just as much as "Morke Gravers Kammer"
![]() | Diabolicanos - Act III: Armageddon
Buy new: $8.91 Next to "Rom 5:12" from Marduk, this was number 2 on my list of favorite albums from 2007. They can be experimental at times which adds alot of depth to the album. Unfortunatly Amazon does not carry their earlier release so I can only recommend one album from these guys.
![]() | Somberlain by Dissection
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.75 Suicide sucks, especially when it takes one of the best Black Metal artists of all time. This is probably my favorite album from the band. Not quite as atmospheric as SOTLB but definatly heavier.
![]() | Reinkaos by Dissection
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.53 Yeah, Yeah I have heard it all before "this album is NOT Real Black Metal". So what if it has some rock mixed in, this is a friggin brilliant album. I will always stand behind this album even though most of the Black Metal community shun it.
![]() | Battles in the North by Immortal
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.20 Blistering speed and icy-cold vocals, what more can you ask for in a Black Metal album. These guys are one of the few bands that can actually take you to other worlds with their lyrics and soundscapes.
![]() | Sons of Northern Darkness by Immortal
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.45 The same old Immortal, just a way better production value. The crisp production almost makes the music seem heavier since the guitars have a thicker tone. Great Album!!!
![]() | Hvis Lyset Tar Oss by Burzum
It took awhile before I really could enjoy albums by Burzum. I was not much of a fan of the more atmospherical bands until I really sat down and let the music take over. I have to be in the mood but when I am this style of Black Metal is amazing.
![]() | Filosofem by Burzum
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $17.50 Great Atmospherical Black Metal album that needs time to soak in and surround the listener.
![]() | Codex Necro by Anaal Nathrakh
Buy used from: $69.99 How could you not love Grinding Black Metal? This stuff is very abrasive and nasty so be prepared. Great band.
![]() | Hell Is Empty, and All the Devils Are Here by Anaal Nathrakh
Buy new: $42.99 / Used from: $9.69 Great modern take on the Black Metal sub-genre. It may not be as chaotic as Codex Necro but it still packs a punch. One listen to the track The Final Absolution and you will be hooked!
![]() | Death - Pierce Me by Silencer
Buy used from: $49.97 When I first heard the vocals on this album blast through my speakers all I could do is laugh. But the more I listened to them the more disturbing it became. It actually came to the point where I had to turn it off and ask myself what the hell was wrong with this guy. This is a very bleak and disturbing album that really takes you through the mind of a mad man. Great album
![]() | Tentacles of Whorror by Leviathan
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $9.16 I am not a huge fan of the American Black Metal scene but Leviathan is an exception. The focus is never on the production but on the atmosphere it creates.
![]() | Massive Conspiracy Against All Life by Leviathan
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.48 2008 release by Wrest of Leviathan and possibly his last. Unbelievable album and great way to end a legacy like Leviathan.
![]() | Her Von Welken Nächten by Dornenreich
Buy used from: $4.00 A recent discovery of mine and one that I am glad I found. They love switching the tempo up on the listener several times during a given song. Switching from a blazing riff to a more melodic passage using whispered raspy vocals. Check them out.
![]() | Bitter Ists, Dem Tod Zu Dienen by Dornenreich
Buy used from: $29.99 Number 2 album from Dornenreich in my opinion. Can't wait to get my hands on their more recent work. If you still do not own an album by these guys, you should make it a priority to try them out. Great band.
![]() | Doedskvad by Taake
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $54.42 Another band that does not get much credit. Taake is an unbelievable Black Metal band than incorporates a bit of dirty Rock N Roll in their sound. The riffs in this album are crazy good.
![]() | ...Bjoergvin... by Taake
Buy used from: $45.00 Taake's ablum before Doedskvad. Hard to get your hands on but well worth it.
![]() | V:/Halmstad by Shining
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.33 The first album I owned by these Suicidal Black Metalers and still my favorite. The only Black part left in their music is the vocals but maybe that is the reason I enjoy their albums so much. They do an amazing job at creating a lush, drepressing atmosphere that you can loose yourself in.
![]() | IV: The Eerie Cold by Shining
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.46 Not quite as enjoyable as Halmstad for me but still an amazing album. This album jams a bit more than Halmstad, which they are great at, but I listen to Shining for the dark and depressive ambiance.
