The AbsenceThe Absence by Luna Mortis
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.36
Release date: February 10 Great new band coming out of Wisconsin, I would describe them as a female fronted Into Eternity progressive/death metal type band. The vocals are very good (both clean and harsh)and the music is already very tight and complex, can't wait to see how Luna Mortis evolves in the future.
AbsuAbsu by Absu
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.99
Release date: February 16 After an eight year wait, the legendary Absu return to unleash their latest Texas brand of occult black/thrash metal and it does not disappoint. It's fast, intense, and the drumming is fantastic, and the songs are very memorable and distinct, it's not just one big blur like some black/thrash/death bands.
Into The LightInto The Light by THE PROPHECY
Release date: February 20 One of the best albums of the year (of the last 5 years), The Prophecy has given birth to a modern doom masterpiece. The emotion that comes pouring out of this album is something to experience. You can listen to the entire album FREE on myspace and see for yourself. Available at Tower Records for $17.97 and is worth every penny.
Lullabies for the Dormant MindLullabies for the Dormant Mind by Agonist
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.29
Release date: March 10 A fairly unique, slightly progressive metalcore band from Canada, this female fronted band takes on various societal issues with great success, definitely for fans of Arch Enemy or All That Remains. Check out the Japanese bonus track, Monochromatic Stains by Dark Tranquillity, on youtube, it's a unique interpretation to say the least.
For Lies I SireFor Lies I Sire by My Dying Bride
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.98
Release date: March 23 Following one of the best new doom bands is of course My Dying Bride, who are of course the masters of doom and gloom and their new album is no exception, can this band do no wrong? My Body A Funeral and Echoes From A Hollow Soul are new classics, but the album is awesome from beginning to end, I just wish they would come to America sometime in my lifetime.
The Epillanic ChoragiThe Epillanic Choragi
Buy new: $8.99
Release date: March 23 If you want to be one of the first to witness the future of experimental, progressive, epic thrash metal, you've found the perfect band. Definitely for fans of Project: Failing Flesh, Opeth, and Mastodon. If you want the physical CD, it is available @ Tower Records for $14.95
Crack the SkyeCrack the Skye by Mastodon
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.49
Release date: March 24 Mastodon return with their fourth full-length and it is epic, made up of only seven songs, but their brand of progressive metal/hard rock never gets stale for a second. This one is infinitely better than Blood Mountain and they are gonna rock out with Converge and Dethklok very soon, what a bill.
Darkness Walks Beside MeDarkness Walks Beside Me by Black Sun Aeon
Buy new: $23.98
Release date: March 27 Here's a new band that I checked out recently, another Finnish doom/death band that sounds similar to November's Doom or Swallow The Sun, Darkness Walks Beside Me is broken up into 9 Chapters, hopefully this is the start of something great.
Everything Is FireEverything Is Fire by Ulcerate
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $10.26
Release date: April 7 Easily the best death metal CD of the year so far, Ulcerate have taken claustrophic, dense, penetrating, suffocating metal to the next level, hailing from New Zealand, I'm surprised the country hasn't crumbled into the ocean after one of their shows...yet.
The Devil You KnowThe Devil You Know by Heaven & Hell
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.10
Release date: April 28 Black Sabbath (yes Black Sabbath) finally releases some new material after I don't know how many years...and it's awesome. Tony Iommi is still (and always will be) the king of metal and Dio sounds fantastic, looking forward to hearing the new stuff live, along with their old classics.
SkyforgerSkyforger by Amorphis
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $17.00
Release date: May 29 This year has been very light on melodic death metal, so I finally decided to give Amorphis a chance and I'm very impressed, I will definitely have to give their back catalog a second listen. For now, enjoy this melodic/folk metal gem.
RomulusRomulus by Ex Deo
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.99
Release date: June 19 A "side project" from Maurizio Iocono of Kataklysm, this is basically the entire band playing a slightly different brand of melodic death metal. If you enjoyed Epic: The Poetry of War and most of their more down tempo songs, you will love this, I know I do...plus they will be touring with Hypocrisy, awesome.
Stone's ReachStone's Reach
Buy new: $7.92
Release date: June 20 When you are done listening to the new Insomnium, go ahead and download the new Be'Lakor, who are just as good as Insomnium in the melodic death/folk genre, despite being an independent release, this album is being placed amongst numerous "Best Of The Year" lists, see why.
Blood OathBlood Oath by Suffocation
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.89
Release date: July 3 New Suffocation, hell yeah! The NY pioneers continue their legendary career with Blood Oath, another release chock full of technical, heavy riffs and breakdowns, killer drumming, and distinct and brutal vocals courtesy of Frank Mullen.
The Lustrate ProcessThe Lustrate Process by The Project Hate MCMXCIX
Buy used from: $19.42
Release date: July 6 You want epic, old school, Christ raping (I can't believe Amazon allows me to say Christ raping) death metal with industrial elements and ethereal female vocals? Well that's exactly what The Project Hate's latest release offers, but I guess you'll have to get it somewhere besides Amazon, try TPH's official website and support the band.
Fragmentary EvidenceFragmentary Evidence by Augury
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.00
Release date: July 17 Technical, progressive Canadian death metal is what's on tap here, definitely give this one about a dozen listens in order to get a sense of the depth and complexity within and you shall be rewarded.
EvangelionEvangelion by Behemoth
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.49
Release date: August 7 I have to say this is one of my favorite Behemoth releases, the vocals are finally a little more subdued and not so in your face, and each song varies greatly, from short, fast paced blast numbers, to slow lurching doom/death type songs, definitely try to get the digi with bonus DVD.
EndgameEndgame by Megadeth
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $11.40
Release date: September 15 Megadeth and Shadows Fall on the same day? Unbelieveable, if they both play on Gigantour in 2010, that would make my summer.
Retribution (Deluxe Edition)Retribution (Deluxe Edition) by Shadows Fall
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.93
Release date: September 15 From the two songs I've heard so far, this will be another great modern thrashterpiece...of course.
Infected NationsInfected Nations by Evile
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.49
Release date: September 21 Another new (not modern) thrash band, I think Evile have taken the next step to become the best of all the new retro thrash bands, looking forward to this one.
Across the DarkAcross the Dark by Insomnium
Buy used from: $11,568.66
Release date: September 22 The best melodic death metal band today (along with Dark Tranquillity), no doubt that this one will kill.
Black Gives Way To BlueBlack Gives Way To Blue by Alice In Chains
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.99
Release date: September 29 No doubt this will be great (did you listen to Degradation Trip?!), very highly anticipated.
Existence Is FutileExistence Is Futile by Revocation
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.58
Release date: September 29 Their first release on Relapse Records, Revocation look to bring some brutal, technical thrash our way, one of the better young bands that are just coming into their own.
Faith Divides Us, Death Unites UsFaith Divides Us, Death Unites Us by Paradise Lost
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.98
Release date: October 6 Hopefully this follows in the line of their previous 2 CDs, that being modern, progressive doom/death/goth, In Requiem was great.
All Shall FallAll Shall Fall by Immortal
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $11.19
Release date: October 6 Back after 7 years, Immortal return to once again claim their crown as black metal kings. Abbath is one of the great riff masters of all time and this album continues to show why.

Memorial RootsMemorial Roots by Brainstorm

Release date: October 20 Brainstorm dish out more power/thrash metal that only these German titans can deliver, this will hopefully be their 5th great release in a row. You check check out the entire album for free on Youtube to see what you are in store for.
Those Whom the Gods DetestThose Whom the Gods Detest by Nile

A Taste of Extreme DivinityA Taste of Extreme Divinity by Hypocrisy
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $11.25
Release date: November 3 First release since 2005, Hypocrisy return with their blackened melodic death metal that only Peter Tagtgren can create, this is a no-brainer, first day purchase.
Design Your UniverseDesign Your Universe by Epica
Buy new: $13.99
Release date: November 3 Ok, honestly I first checked this out because the redheaded lead singer is FINE (sue me), but the music is pretty heavy (for gothic/symphonic power metal), with 2 ex-members of God Dethroned, I'll give it a full listen when it is released.
New MoonNew Moon by Swallow the Sun
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $11.66
Release date: November 17 Checking out the samples so far, STS has taken another great leap forward in the always entertaining doom/death genre, it sounds epic!
The Evolution of ChaosThe Evolution of Chaos by Heathen
