Wincing the Night AwayWincing the Night Away by The Shins
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $14.25
An early favorite, The Shins reveal their genius in waves, once the initial differences from Chutes Too Narrow are overcome. Strong from start to finish, The Shins showcase their versatility and masterful songwriting as well as their ability to mature.
One Cell in the SeaOne Cell in the Sea by A Fine Frenzy
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.93
Alison Sudol's beautiful voice is only the beginning of the musical journey that is One Cell in the Sea. The emotion is tangible in every song as Sudol's love, loss, hope, and sadness become your own. Nearly flawless songwriting, lyrics, musicianship, and execution.
The ReminderThe Reminder by Feist
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.00
Feist pushes her boundaries and breaks free from her tried-and-true quiet indie-jazz into new territories. This different direction manifests itself on spare beauties like "The Water" and the interesting "Sea Lion Woman".
All of a Sudden I Miss EveryoneAll of a Sudden I Miss Everyone by Explosions in the Sky
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.11
Perhaps it isn't quite as magnificent as "The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place", but few albums ever could be. EitS continues its marvelous legacy by succeeding where most post-rock groups fail: in conveying emotions, ideas, and stories with their music. EitS is truly poetry in music, and they leave their contemporaries in the dust, comforted only by their cold crescendos.
Challengers: Executive Edition Box SetChallengers: Executive Edition Box Set by The New Pornographers
Buy new: $3.98 / Used from: $0.01
A strong follow-up to Twin Cinema, the band makes good use of their four main vocalists and writes captivating songs which expand upon, but don't mimic, their previous works. Standouts are "My Rights Versus Yours", "Challengers", and "Mutiny, I Promise You."
Cease to BeginCease to Begin by Band of Horses
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.49
Their debut didn't appeal to me from what I'd heard of it, but Cease to Begin caught me almost immediately. Once I had it, I couldn't stop listening. Their sound is infectious, catchy, and beautiful. Check out "Ode to LRC", "Detlef Schrempf", and "Cigarettes Wedding Bands".
For Emma, Forever AgoFor Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.00
A recent discovery, I gave it a listen because of the impossibly beautiful "Re: Stacks", one of the best songs I have heard in a while. Whether the words have meaning or not, the emotion conveyed in this song is incredibly powerful. The rest of the cd does not disappoint either, and "Skinny Love" and "Blindsided" are excellent as well.
CitiesCities by Anberlin
Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $6.09
A pleasantly surprising album that catches and holds the attention, building on previous efforts while still branching into new territory. It has a fuller, deeper, and occasionally darker sound.
No World For TomorrowNo World For Tomorrow by Coheed and Cambria
Buy used from: $2.92
Although the direction the band has gone in is regrettable compared to the story-based prog of their first two albums, the individual tracks on this are strong. The solos are very good, but Claudio's deepening, hoarser voice does not become him. Also, the final track is no fitting ending for the saga.
MelanktonMelankton by Kate Havnevik
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.50
Kate Havnevik's voice drives most of this album, carrying the listener past some comparisons to Imogen Heap. "Nowhere Warm", "Unlike Me", and "Timeless" are beautiful songs that showcase Havnevik's ability to compliment a beautiful voice with beautiful accompaniment.
The Shepherd's DogThe Shepherd's Dog by Iron & Wine
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.98
Strikingly different from "Our Endless Numbered Days", this album brings Iron & Wine out of the realm of sleep-inducing folk to a more upbeat and complex work that features a range of styles, from the quiet beauty of "Carousel" to the interesting "Boy With A Coin".
Hey Eugene!Hey Eugene! by Pink Martini
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.98
I've had difficulty comparing this one to Pink Martini's first two efforts, so I won't bother. It's great on its own, continuing the legacy of uniting a wide range of musical styles and languages in very close proximity.
Snakes & ArrowsSnakes & Arrows by Rush
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.99
I am a big fan of all Rush eras, so I won't be one to condemn this for not being 2112 or Moving Pictures. It succeeds in bringing some more classical Rush influence to the newer sound they've been working towards. However, it lacks some of the lyrical magic with which Peart has made his legacy, and it doesn't end anywhere near as strongly as it starts.
Autumn of the SeraphsAutumn of the Seraphs by Pinback
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.05
It took me a couple listens to get into Pinback, but long drives through the countryside of Italy helped a lot. The genius of this group manifests itself slowly and subtly, but surely. Tracks like "Good To Sea" and "Barnes" are great ways to get familiar with the style of Pinback.
In Our Bedroom After the WarIn Our Bedroom After the War by Stars
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.95
My first reaction was disappointment with this release, but the emotion in this CD is so different than earlier efforts that I had to listen to it with a different attitude and expectation. The first half of the album is magic (although the second half still leaves much to be desired) but the real gem is the title track, one of the finest the band has written.
CombinationsCombinations by Eisley
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.86
It's not Room Noises. This is apparent from the first song, heavy and realistic, quite a contrast from their whimsical debut. That said, it is a good album, and the voices and harmonies of the sisters are as infectious as ever. Nevertheless, the lyrics suffer, and if this is the new direction that Eisley wants to go in, they might do well to consider returning to their roots.
Once: Music from the Motion PictureOnce: Music from the Motion Picture by Original Soundtrack
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.99
One of the best non-orchestral soundtracks to a movie I've ever heard, this preserves all of the best songs from the excellent movie (which, unlike many movies about or featuring music, are actually very good). Glen Hansard and Marketa Iglova put forth some beautifully written and sung music, which is, above all, sincere and heart-wrenching, even when it isn't pretty.
Pocket SymphonyPocket Symphony by Air
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.16
I still have mixed feelings about this one. It didn't touch or move my spirit in the same way as their earlier albums, but it cannot be denied that there are very strong tracks. From a musical perspective, Air continues a strong tradition of ambient and electronic music that is lighter than air.
The ConThe Con by Tegan and Sara
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.90
This is one of those follow-up albums that actually make you appreciate the previous one even more. I liked "So Jealous" but "The Con" made me like their music much more, despite the fact that I would rank it not much higher than "So Jealous". Without compromising their unique, even harsh sound, the twins have managed to make their music more catchy, accessible, and musical with "The Con."
The Light DividesThe Light Divides by Winterpills
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $6.31
A surprising find for me, I never intended to buy the follow-up to their self-titled debut. But I'm glad I did, as the quiet folk and subtle vocals is the perfect medicine. "June Eyes", "Lay Your Heartbreak", and "Broken Arm" are just a few of the excellent tracks that "The Light Divides" contains within its simple, unassuming cover.
Some People Have Real ProblemsSome People Have Real Problems by Sia
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.54
Admittedly, Sia's voice was a turnoff for me from her work with Zero 7, but I decided to give it a shot anyway. I'm pleased to say that it grew on me... strongly. With such an excellent range of songs, from soft and sweet to in-your-face, Sia's popularity is well-deserved.
Echoes, Silence, Patience & GraceEchoes, Silence, Patience & Grace by Foo Fighters
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.10
As the Foo Fighters have developed so many styles, naturally some fans will gravitate toward specific ones. Understanding this, they put out an album that will appease all their fans, as the CD is rich with quality heavy tracks, ballads, and acoustic numbers.
The StoryThe Story by Brandi Carlile
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $4.44
Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile captivates the listener with her passionate delivery, beautiful lyrics, and varied songs. Practically exploding with passion, the title track almost immediately hooks the listener, but the treasures go far beneath the single. Check out "Turpentine", "Have You Ever", "Shadow On The Wall", and "Cannonball".
Autumn Fallin'Autumn Fallin' by Jaymay
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $3.81
A recent addition to my list, I was pleasantly surprised at Jaymay's ability to evoke hints of Regina Spektor without being silly in any way. Instead, we have the crowning moment of the album, "Sea Green, Sea Blue" which speak of personal experiences but common emotions, a combination which resonates deeply.
Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. LeadingAct II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. Leading by The Dear Hunter
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.46
Though it has roots in the genre of modern pop-rock bordering on emo, The Dear Hunter distinguishes itself from similar groups by being musically gifted. Their music incorporates elements of jazz, blues, and classic rock, but suffers from coming too close to the unnecessary screaming often found in the genre.
