My Favorite Prog Metal of 2007
By an Amazon.com customer
Systematic ChaosSystematic Chaos by Dream Theater
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.98
USA/Canada. With the less than “in your face” album Octavarium, DT left some questioning whether they still ruled the genre. Happily, Systematic Chaos sees our heroes returning with gusto and confidence. Filled with snarling riffs and blistering solos and plenty of prog, DT composes a spontaneous, semi-random collect of songs that still seems to make perfect collective sense.
AnimaAnima by Spheric Universe Experience
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.55
France. Young but thoroughly accomplished musicians and possessing doctoral degrees in the genre, Spheric Universe Experience (SUE) release a masterpiece of tightly intertwined heaviness and maximum complexity. Relatively unknown with only one previous album, SUE would seem to hold great hope for many years of excellent music yet to come.
The Origins Of RuinThe Origins Of Ruin by Redemption
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.02
USA. Mature and filled with soul, Redemption produce their excellent third album. Balancing the dark with moments of hope, Redemption prove that metal can be more than devils and dragons. Combining great lyrics with tremendous musical skill, Redemption’s music has true staying power.
Calling The Earth to WitnessCalling The Earth to Witness by Darkwater
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $13.44
Sweden. Syncopated rhythms, shifting time signatures, soaring solos, crunch-crunch, extended compositions, incredible production and wonderfully layered vocals, Darkwater emerges as 2007’s “rookies of the year”. There is nothing that seems under developed about this debut effort. Can I buy stock in these guys? Probably not, but I would settle for a US tour.
Paradise LostParadise Lost by Symphony X
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.95
USA. While it was a long wait, Symphony X returns with a very heavy album. While the prog may have retreated slightly in favor of a purer metal approach, there is still plenty for fans of elaborate symphonic metal to sink their teeth into here. You definitely won’t be hearing Paradise Lost on your local easy listening radio station.
Words Untold & Dreams UnlivedWords Untold & Dreams Unlived by Serenity
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $13.59
Austria. “Father, the sleeper has awakened.” Indeed! New from central Europe, Serenity has more than awakened. With excellent song writing, Serenity expertly walks the tight rope of sweet melodies while never requiring an insulin injection (aka Styx). Oh, did I mention hard hitting riffage, thundering drums, and introspective moments among the mayhem?
God's EquationGod's Equation by Pagan's Mind
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $13.99
Norway. God’s Equation sees Pagan’s Mind picking up where they left off with the excellent Enigmatic: Calling. With vocals that could cut through miles of solid rock, possibly the best guitar tone on earth and a pulsar-like rhythm section, Pagan’s Mind continues the extraterrestrial theme, even covering Bowie’s Hallo Spaceboy with all the bombast it deserves.
IsolateIsolate by Circus Maximus
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.99
Norway. Circus Maximus affirm their standing among the world’s best progressive metal bands. With a somewhat less grandiose approach, Isolate excels with melody, melody, melody... Did I mention melody? After my first listen, I feared that possibly melody was the only attribute of Isolate. However, fear not, there are oceans of prog metal here to digest.
And the Rest Is SilenceAnd the Rest Is Silence by Empyrios
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $7.99
Italy. With names like Mularoni, Mancini and Mastroianni, Italy's love for and place in the prog metal genre is very secure. Extremely hard edged sound, ultra technical solos, stratospheric vocals, and bits of orchestration make this a sure winner for the prog metal faithful. Comparisons will definitely be made to Symphony X, but heck this stuff is very fresh and creative.
Ghost OperaGhost Opera by Kamelot
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.97
USA/Norway/Germany. Following-up the super classic The Black Halo was not going to be easy. While falling short of its lofty predecessor, Ghost Opera is a very successful album by any standards. Khan may be the best vocalist not only in the prog metal world, but possibly the entire rock industry.
EgoEgo by Dimension
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.93
Mexico. These Mexicans easily make this list with their very strong second release, Ego. Progressive metal through and through, Dimension does offer a unique sound with seemingly unlikely guitar tones and breathy vocals, and yet it all works incredibly well together. Not fearing longer pieces, the title track falls just 5 seconds short of twenty minutes, but I wish that it was longer!
Terra IncognitaTerra Incognita by Age of Nemesis
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.90
Hungary. Originally recorded with in Magyar, Terra Incogdita was re-recorded with English lyrics in 2007 with the world being treated to this Hungarian prog metal wonder. The Iommi-styled guitar tone and 70’s hard rock vocals meet modern progressive metal structures to yield a very cool concept album.
ArtemisiaArtemisia by Sun Caged
Buy new: $17.97 / Used from: $12.00
The Netherlands. With ultra flashy guitar and complex arrangements, Sun Caged delivers their second album in very fine form. Accessible and yet loaded with plenty of chops, Artemisia slides easily from moody meandering to excessive crunching.
Dead ReckoningDead Reckoning by Threshold
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.28
England. With more kick than their previous album, Dead Reckoning sees Threshold continuing with its patented blend of easily assimilated melodies. Pilot in the Sky of Dreams, clocking in just under 10 minutes, is the highlight of the album with smooth vocals, tasty guitar riffs, and spot-on drumming.
Implications of a Genetic DefenseImplications of a Genetic Defense
Buy new: $18.99
USA. While DT’s Scenes from a Memory had all the accouterments of a classy Hitchcock screenplay, Implications of a Genetic Defense has all the subtlety of a John Carpenter horror flick. With that said, this is pretty neat stuff. High testosterone vocals deliver the chilling lyrics while guitar wonder, Troy Stetina, plows through some pretty impressive material.
Heart of SunHeart of Sun by Heart of Sun
Buy new: $45.99 / Used from: $27.67
Italy. Progressive metal with psychedelic overtones, Heart of Sun carve out a niche and deliver a unique sound. With plenty of instrumental showmanship and interesting lyrics, this debut album has enduring quality.
Angular PerceptionsAngular Perceptions by Thought Chamber
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.00
USA. An assembled “super group” of top musicians, including Enchant’s Ted Leonard, Thought Chamber delivers a highly intricate album of metal music for the technical element of the market. As the group name implies, this music will make your head hurt oh so good!
PathosrayPathosray by Pathosray
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $12.23
Italy. Progressive metal with strong leanings toward the power metal sub-genre, Pathosray hit hard with a strong debut album. Powerful vocals deliver some great choruses. Great bass guitar leads an accomplished group of musicians.
A Great DivideA Great Divide by Suspyre
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.99
USA. Highly talented music students deliver progressive metal at its technical extreme. Everything can be found here including classical, jazz, strings, orchestration, and even tenor saxophone. A Great Divide is progressive metal’s Tubular Bells. If you love eclectic music, this one is for you.
