LammendamLammendam by Carach Angren
Buy new: $32.99
The thing that sets these guys apart from the hords of Symphonic Black Metal bands is their subject matter and their ability to tell a story and not just play music. The lyrical content of this album deals with the white ghost of Lammendam. This theme mixed with Black Metal attitude and their ability to engulf the listener in the story makes for one hell of an album. Get it NOW!
KonkursKonkurs by Lifelover
Buy new: $25.99
Depressive Black Metal is easly becoming one of favorite sub-genres. Their is just something about how someone can take such a caotic subject as suicide and make it sound so beautiful and mind numbing at the same time. This is my first album from Lifelover and it will not be my last. Mix "Silencer" with "Shining" and Lifelover is what you get. Brilliant album!!!!
TriumvirateTriumvirate
Awesome Experimental Death Metal. If you are looking for Butal Death Metal that does not sound the same as every other band out there, give this album a run.
AnglAngl by Ihsahn
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.67
Brilliant album from former Emperor front man Ihsahn. I would even say it is one of the best Progressive Black Metal albums ever created. His debut album "The Adversary" was good but this is a giant step forward.
Turning Season WithinTurning Season Within by Draconian
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $8.99
Beauty and Aggression mixed into a one great Goth/Doom/Death release.
Architect of LiesArchitect of Lies by Mercenary
Buy new: $14.97 / Used from: $50.28
If you have never listened to these guys before you really need to give them a chance. They mix Progressive, Power and Melodic Death Metal all into one tight package. This album is more of a mix between their 11 Dreams album which was one of their heavier albums and Hours That Remain which had more of a Power Metal mix. Great Album!!
Mare NostrumMare Nostrum by Stormlord
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.21
Mare Nostrum is turning out to be one of the big surprises of the year for me so far. I knew from my initial listens that it was a awesome album that deserved to be on my top 40 but it wasn't until recently that I really was able to see it for what it truly is, a brillant album. It is hard to put into words so you will just have to buy it for yourself.
The Age of NeroThe Age of Nero by Satyricon
Buy new: $27.98 / Used from: $7.94
The reason I love these guys so much is they never make the same album twice. If I wanted to hear "Dark Medieval Times" again, I would just break out the classic debut. This ablum takes what "Now, Diabolical" started and builds upon it by slowing down the tempo a bit and adding some darker more atmospherical elements. Just listen to the track "Die By My Hand" and you will see what I mean.
CommunionCommunion by Septic Flesh
Buy used from: $21.03
Great Gothic Death Metal release. Surprising enough it was hard for me to find a song that I did not care for on this disc. It is just one solid metal album that should be in everyones library. The vocal work on this album is amazing.
Puppetmaster Of PandemoniumPuppetmaster Of Pandemonium
Dark/Black Metal album full of twits and turns. The vocal work is what attracted me to this album, I guess I am a sucker for a vocalist that utilizes several different styles on a album. You gotta check this one out!
Hornets of the PogromHornets of the Pogrom
Buy new: $7.92
First off I do NOT agree with or condone the views of this band. With that said these guys have created one of the best straight up Death Metal albums of the year. The guitars are very remenisent of the earlier Thrash crossover bands like "Death" and "Athiest" but with a better since of melody. Masterfull!!
War Metal Battle MasterWar Metal Battle Master by Lair of the Minotaur
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.00
Surprising enough this is one of my top releases this year. They have a great Death/Sludge sound that jams.
The Formation of DamnationThe Formation of Damnation by Testament
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.44
Lives up to all the hype. This record is Thrashtastic!!
TaakeTaake by Taake
Buy new: $26.98
The new self-titled album from Taake sees the band take a more straight forward and heavier Black Metal approach. Gone are the over melodic riffs you are used to hearing in their previous releases. Instead you are treated to some good old classic Black N Roll riffs remenicent of the days when Black Metal meant something more.
MorphosisMorphosis by Hate
Buy new: $27.98 / Used from: $4.98
I am really disappointed that I had never listened to these guys before this release. These guys play a very catchy form of Death Metal laced with melodic guitars and atmosphere. Now that does not mean that you can compare these guys to the Gothenburg scene at all. It just means that their style of Death Metal is catchier than most. These guys do it right!
Honour The DisorderHonour The Disorder
Death Metal from Finland. You can tell these guys had been listening to alot of Old School Swedish Death Metal before this album from the different guitar tone they used. Think Entombed with a bit of synth work mixed in. I am not talking about a ton of synths, just enough to spice it up a bit. Great band and album.
DismemberDismember by Dismember
Buy new: $22.98
There is just something about their Brutal form of Old School Death Metal that I just can't get enough of.
Cynic ParadiseCynic Paradise by Pain
Buy new: $23.98
First off I have to say that I really enjoyed this album. The first three songs are unbeliveable and rank up there in the top songs of the year. But the album as a whole is not as strong as his last release "Psalms Of Extinction". Tracks "Don't Care", "No One Cares" and "Not Your Kind" are just simple filler tracks. Overall this is an excellent album worthy of a top 40 position.
Twilight and RandomnessTwilight and Randomness by Emancer
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $47.55
So Enslaved's new album did not live up to your expectations? Then this album is a must buy for you. These guys play a very similar style of Progressive Black Metal but even explore the industrial side as well. This album had everything I was looking for in Progressive Black Metal album and actually raised the bar for other bands in the same sub-genre. Get It Now!!
Holographic UniverseHolographic Universe by Scar Symmetry
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.57
This album gets better after every spin. The song writing has gotten better which ends up making the album very addictive and memorable. If you where looking for a heavy album like Pitch Black Progress then you might be a bit dissapointed at first since they use the clean singing way more often on this album.
The Fathomless MasteryThe Fathomless Mastery by Bloodbath
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $9.94
Long gone is their classic Swedish Old School Death Metal sound. The Old School sound is relpaced with lighting fast, modern Death Metal.
Quiet EarthQuiet Earth by Bison B.C.
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.85
This album blew me away, plain and simple. The only other band on my list that you can really compare the sound of Bison B.C. to is Lair of The Minotaur. They play a very aggressive version Of Sludge/Doom. Their formula is quite simple but what makes them stand out is their ability to write memorable riffs that are just addictive as hell!
Lazarus BirdLazarus Bird
Buy new: $7.92
Great piece of Progressive Metal. Think of Opeth but with less of Doom feel. This is one of those albums where it will span several genre types within one song. The majority of the vocal work on this album can be compared to Peter Dolving of The Haunted.
The Way of All FleshThe Way of All Flesh by Gojira
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.94
Not quite as addicting as "From Mars to Sirius" but still one hell of an album that will more than likely stay in my top 40 list.
Night Eternal (Special Ed.)Night Eternal (Special Ed.) by Moonspell
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $13.45
Awesome album from start to finish. I tend to enjoy their albums more when they utilize there more aggressive side more frequently. This album was the perfect mix. Scorpion Flower is an amazing song.
Planetary DualityPlanetary Duality by The Faceless
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.10
I am very surprised that such a great album flew completely flew under my radar for over a month. On the surface they play Technical Death Metal but after the first couple of tracks you realize it is much more. These guys have a very progressive look on the sub-genre and have created a brilliant album that never stands still.
God to the IllfatedGod to the Illfated by Devian
Buy new: $18.99
"Ninewinged Serpent" left me expecting and wanting more. Part of it has to be that I was anticipating an agressive album and what I got was a very melodic approach to Blackened Thrash Metal. "God To The Illfated" sees the band with a more aggressive sound and a huge step up in lyical content. In fact I think Legion's vocal work fits better in Devian than it did in Marduk. Great album.
WatershedWatershed by Opeth
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $13.22
Opeth always release great albums and this is no exception. I purchased this album the week it came out and never gave it the attention a Opeth album needs. I finally got around to it and I actually enjoy it quite a bit. The balance between the dark and light sections is very even which helps to keep the longer songs interesting through out.
VersusVersus by The Haunted
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $2.82
This will be one of those love, hate albums for 2008. Some fans may not like the album since it is not a lighting fast Thrash attack. I for one so far love the album. Yeah the songs may be played at a mid pace but the awesome riffs are still there in spades. Plus the slower pace helps to seperate the tracks instead of it being 11 tracks that seem to melt into each other. Great album.
Killing MusicKilling Music by Benediction

I am a sucker for a great old school Death Metal album and this record bleeds old school. Its been like 7 years since Organized Chaos and this record in my opinion is worth the wait.
TraitorsTraitors by Misery Index
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.99
This album really surprised me. I ignored their 2006 release on the assumption that they were just another Deathcore band. This album kicks and never lets up. For an American band it does not get much better than this.
Your Demons Their AngelsYour Demons Their Angels by Miseration
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.49
Brutal Melodeath? Yes Please!! I always wanted to know what Scar Symmetry would sound like if they focused on their heavier side.
Twilight of the Thunder GodTwilight of the Thunder God by Amon Amarth
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.94
I am very surprised that Amon Amarth was able to top their brilliant 2006 album "With Oden On Our Side". This release is full of memorable slabs of Melodic Death Metal that you can't help to band your head to. This album even has a couple tracks that I would define as straight forward Death Metal. Good Stuff.
Strychnine.213Strychnine.213 by Aborted
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.72
It took a long time for me to come to terms that this album was not supposed to sound like "Goremageddon". Once I did, I realized that this album is quite amazing at times. Change can be hard to take when it comes from a band that you could count on making a certain kind of record every time. You can tell that this is a ablum from a band that was ready to change and try new things.
NN by Norther
Buy new: $51.99 / Used from: $52.78
Melodic Death Metal. I finally think the boys in Norther got tired of living under the shadow of Children Of Bodom. This release, in my opinion, is way better than Blooddrunk.
Ob (Servant) (Bonus Dvd)Ob (Servant) (Bonus Dvd) by Psycroptic
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.99
Hard to believe that only one guitarist is responsible for the great riffing on this ablum. The other high point of this great piece of Technical Death Metal is the drum work. If you are looking for one long double bass fest then this is NOT your album. It is full of technical fills that will blow your mind. Great album!
Hades RiseHades Rise by Aura Noir
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $38.81
Dirty, Punk filled Blackened Thrash metal is the name of the game for this band. The title track is amazing.
VIII: The Time UnchainedVIII: The Time Unchained by Catamenia
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $53.24
If you aren't familiar with these guys, they play Melodic Black Metal. This release worried me since I knew going in that they where using a new vocalist. My worries where set aside though once I spun it. The new vocalist's approach seems to be darker and helps to give the album a heavier feel. Top notch!
CyclesCycles by Rotten Sound
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.63
Great mix of Grindcore and Death Metal. They have the signature Buzzsaw Guitar Tone of Swedish Death Metal but the signature Short Song Length of Grindcore. The vocal performace is outstanding and never becomes monotonous. Top Notch Release!!!
Sovereign NocturnalSovereign Nocturnal by Velnias
Buy used from: $13.89
Doom/Folk/Black Metal from Illinois? The US actually has a very nice group of bands like Velnias that pull this weird subgenre off pretty well (Wolves In The Throne Room and Agalloch). Unlike the other bands though, Velnias are better at keeping the listener's attention without compromising the slow tempo and atmosphere.
