Terrorize Brutalize SodomizeTerrorize Brutalize Sodomize by Vomitory
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $5.50
WOW! Holy Sodom, I've fallen in love with the brutality of death metal all over again. Vomitory are gods among insects: T. Gustafsson proves he's one of the best drummers on the scene today, Rundqvist's vocals are cutthroat & the dual guitar terror from U. Gustafsson & Östlund is as amazingly diverse as it is horrifically shredding. If you don't like this album, you don't like death metal. Period.
FictionFiction by Dark Tranquillity
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.88
Thank Hell (or Heaven, your choice) for Dark Tranquillity. While many of their brethren in the Gothenburg scene have opted to turn soft & self-indulgent, DT have consistently put out album after album of high quality, no bulls**t melodic death metal. Following "Damage Done" (2002) & "Character" (2005), "Fiction" is the perfect coda to a new millennium 3-some of brilliant melodic death records.
HopeHope by Swallow the Sun
Buy used from: $14.77
"Gloom, Beauty and Despair" - the title of an earlier Swallow the Sun song, it's also an ideal description for the band. Their heart-wrenching sound is among the best the doom/death metal genre has to offer, elegantly exemplified in this, their 3rd album. Melancholic to a choking point & massive in its scorned misery, "Hope" is an epitome of cold emotion & brutality ideally wound together.
HarvestHarvest by Naglfar
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.89
Naglfar's follow-up to 2005's punishing "Pariah" is an absolutely visceral assault of ruthless black/death metal madness. Unrelenting in devious ways, even the more melodic passages seethe with intricate evils in the rhythms. A brutal early highlight for 2007, if you liked "Pariah" and its predecessor, "Sheol", check out "Harvest" - together they form an unholy trinity of dark & wicked powers...
Dead AgainDead Again by Type O Negative
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.53
Another massive offering of darkness from goth-masters Type O Negative. This album needs a chance to grow on you, probably even more so than previous TON releases but once it sinks in, it sinks in deep... Intriguing in its intimacy & cryptic overtones, this may not be the band's greatest record but it's certainly among the most substantial & thought-provoking. It's a great listening experience.
ResurrectionResurrection by Chimaira
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $6.90
"Regression" may have been a more appropriate title. After their monolithic S/T album in 2005, I'd hoped Chimaira were only beginning to explode from their creative shell. Sadly, "Resurrection" does little to follow the promise of its predecessor. Aside from a few stand-out songs (notably the anthem "Six" & savage "Worthless") this is largely an exercise in familiarity & disappointment.
The Novella ReservoirThe Novella Reservoir by Novembers Doom
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.24
My current favorite US doom metal band (though they really have more of a doom/death sound). Their 6th album focuses more on that melodic death sound than previous releases, though there's still plenty of gloom to be found throughout. Vocalist Paul Kuhr expands upon his already impressive range and the low-end & drum sound make it feel heavy enough to weigh you down like a stone in the water.
Gothic KabbalahGothic Kabbalah by Therion
Buy new: $20.98 / Used from: $3.00
The metal band that makes you feel cultured & sophisticated (if only for a while) with their masterfully crafted symphonic & operatic opuses are quickly becoming masters of their art. This new double album is impressive on every level you'd expect from Therion and way beyond... Beautiful and hypnotic, morose and sorrowed, mighty and prophetic - I could go on all day... 2007's first masterpiece.
March of the ParasiteMarch of the Parasite by Laethora
Buy new: $4.98 / Used from: $0.78
Laethora is a side project formed by Niklas Sundin of Dark Tranquillity & 3 members of The Provenance. "March of the Parasite" is an exciting trip through the various subtleties & stylistic ranges of death metal, from the melodic to highly progressive, technical, even quite brutal compositions. Definitely one of my most interesting recent discoveries. Death metal explorers, don't miss this one.
DemonizedDemonized by Astarte
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $34.86
Had trouble finding a copy here in the US but it was totally worth the effort. "Demonized" is the 5th album by these black metal sirens. Fronted by the versatile & lovely Tristessa, Astarte is an almost entirely female demon legion. With raw, stinging vocals & blazing death metal style guitars, it's probably their strongest yet. Features guest vocals by the voices behind Mayhem, Arch Enemy & more.
Threads of LifeThreads of Life by Shadows Fall
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $0.90
This one has left me perplexed. I say lead-off single "Redemption" is one of the best "radio-ready" songs to come from the metal world in a long time. Yet, it's hard to find much else here that really grabs me & demands continued attention. All the Shadows Fall strengths are still here: ace guitars, killer solos, deep hooks & sharp drums, it all just feels pretty stale & tired. I don't get it...
In Sorte DiaboliIn Sorte Diaboli by Dimmu Borgir
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $5.32
One of the most popular & successful black metal-ish bands in the world is back to preach sin, break genre rules & annoy the Hell out of the tr00, kVlt black metal underground. "In Sorte Diaboli" is an impressive offering, though it falls a bit short of "triumphant" status, it's a damn enjoyable record that should satisfy most Dimmu fans & nab them some more. Take that, underground elitists! Ha!
Voices of OmensVoices of Omens by Rwake
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.31
Rwake spin some dark, brutal metal & raw southern hardcore into one hell of a powerful release. Equal parts groovy, twisted, vicious & just plain creepy, fans of Eyehategod & Soilent Green should definitely check this one out. I think that if the creature from the Black Lagoon hears music in his head, it probably sounds something like "Voices of Omens"... and that's pretty g0ddamn cool...
The BlackeningThe Blackening by Machine Head
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.37
Wish I could say this lives up to the hype or the promise their previous album but I can't. Despite some excellent guitars throughout, these songs are over-extended & forced, testing only my patience & attention span, not my thrash capacity. "Now I Lay Thee Down" is a cool dark groove but mostly "The Blackening" just stinks of self-indulgence. Machine Head, wake up & smell the carcass - it's you.
The HinderersThe Hinderers by Daath
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $2.38
Technical death metal that draws influence from genre legends Cynic & Atheist and infuses the latest progressive styles of fresh blood such as Arsis & Gojira. Filled with blazing solos and polished with a stellar production by the great James Murphy, "The Hinderers" is speedy, brutal, groovy & sharp. Daath maybe be a pronunciation quandary but it's a name death metal fans shouldn't overlook.
Sworn to the DarkSworn to the Dark by Watain
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $9.37
You want serious BLACK f**ken metal? "Sworn to the Dark" is black beyond black. I don't know if it's "trOO" or "kVlt" enough for the corpse-paint crowd (that's all stupid to me) but I say Watain have created the best black metal album of the year, so far. There's a big Dissection influence, so if "Reinkaos" didn't melt your icy hearts, this may be what the witch doctor ordered. Thank you, Satan.
Error in EvolutionError in Evolution by One Man Army and the Undead Quartet
Buy used from: $4.10
These death/thrashers' sophomore effort follows an impressive '06 debut & initially, I must admit, I was somewhat disappointed. But this one grows on you, big time. While it may lack in speed & ferocity at times, it makes room for better melody, a wider range of vocals & an overall more diverse record than its predecessor. "Such a Sick Boy" is a ridiculously addictive song. All Hail the Army!!!
The Ritual Fires of AbandonmentThe Ritual Fires of Abandonment by Minsk
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.95
Another album that's hard to categorize, simply because there's so much going on. Elements of sludge, progressive, atmospheric, technical & gothic metal are all cooking in these fires. Sonic disciples of Neurosis, Isis & Tool, you'll also hear whispers of Opeth, Cult of Luna, I even felt the haunting presence of The Doors at times. Elegant, dismal & focused, it's easy to get lost inside this music
United AbominationsUnited Abominations by Megadeth
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.33
Even with negative views, I try to be tactful in my criticisms on this list. I can't do that now. "United Abominations" sucks. I've been a long time Deth fan & supporter but my torrid love affair with the "She-Wolf" now comes to a bitter end. Beyond a single glimmer of greatness ("Sleepwalker") the songwriting here is abysmal & utterly forgettable, at best. Tact be damned, this album is wolf s**t.
Live in DeutschlandLive in Deutschland
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.06
This live DVD/CD features Kataklysm unleashed upon the Party-San Open Air Festival. Fans of older material may be disappointed, this setlist features only songs from 2000-2006 albums. Both the show & behind-the-scenes are a bit shorter than I would've liked & the editing/transition effects of the live video are annoying but the performance itself is dynamic & volatile, well worth checking out.
Given to the RisingGiven to the Rising by Neurosis
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.65
Definitely a more contentious offering from Neurosis, probably their most volatile since 1996's classic "Through Silver in Blood". But it's not all rough & wild, a lot of the more mellow, progressive tendencies showcased on more recent releases are a big part of this album too. It's a bit of a chaotic/hypnotic enigma, as Neurosis can often be. I don't try to analyze 'em, I just love the music...
Cryptic ImplosionCryptic Implosion by Odious Mortem
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $8.96
Impressive offering from a fairly new name in technical death metal, Odious Mortem show serious potential here. In terms of pure technicality, they fall about dead center between Meshuggah & Suffocation - plenty of wicked guitar work with ample brutality to back it all up. These guys just need a little bit more originality in their sound, once they find that, even the sky's not the limit...
Holy Murder MasqueradeHoly Murder Masquerade by Impious
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.47
Hearty & wicked Swedish death-thrash is the name of the game in this cleverly designed concept album from Impious. While some may find this album somewhat familiar - it's less than groundbreaking - but if you enjoyed the band's previous release, "Hellucinate" (2004), or if you're a fan of breakneck speed, brutality & head-banging mania, you might enjoy this bloody, psychotic crusade.
Shadows in the LightShadows in the Light by Immolation
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $4.99
Before now, I knew Immolation only from their classic 1991 debut, "Dawn of Possession", but they've been a mainstay in the US death metal scene ever since - I've just fallen behind. Well, I'm catching up now & enjoying the Hell out of it. This album, their 7th overall, is a sonic fireball of pure NY death, distinctive enough to stand apart but definitely still the same Immolation sound at heart.
MarasmusMarasmus by Leng Tche
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.15
Leng Tch'e & their self-described "razorgrind" style may seem somewhat subdued in comparison to their last album, "The Process of Elimination", yet "Marasmus" still packs a pretty mean punch. Though not quite as sharp as past offerings, these songs are still heavy as hell & they know exactly what they're aiming for. The razor-wire may be off the gloves but the fist is still as merciless as ever.
War of AttritionWar of Attrition by Dying Fetus
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.99
Well, it's definitely a Fetus record, their brutality is still storming like madness. I only wish it were a bit more of an imaginative madness - "War of Attrition" is stretched pretty thin as far as creativity is concerned. But it's definitely a solid slab of insanely brutal death/grind & there's plenty to be praised here. I just don't see myself getting a lot of replay value out of this one.
Testify for My VictimsTestify for My Victims by Carnal Forge
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $1.52
Compared to previous Carnal Forge albums, like "Who's Gonna Burn", the new stuff feels somewhat subdued, at a loss for the breakneck speed & wild, frenzied sound I'd come to expect. This is definitely their most melodic album yet, slower & more controlled throughout but definitely still quality stuff. I might have liked a few shots of adrenaline here & there but it's a solid album nonetheless.
XenosapienXenosapien by Cephalic Carnage
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.94
Though it's not as uniquely weird as albums like "Lucid Interval", Cephalic Carnage's latest is still one hell of a killer. More direct than previous offerings, though not completely devoid of that distinctly bizarre CC character, "Xenosapien" is a blaze of technical grind & brutal death metal. Hardly discovering a new species, just showing off the strength & abilities of the "hydro-grind" beast.
Vena SeraVena Sera by Chevelle
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.09
Only traces of metal here but it's a hard rock album, so I’m covering it. Melodic hard rock, specifically, layered with nu metal elements. Album #4 by Chevelle, a band in a genre I'm very quickly tiring of - so I'm surprised that “Vena Sera” has enough substance & hook to keep me listening. Needs more spins before I can really be critical but my 1st impression is, believe it or not, quite positive
Live ConsternationLive Consternation by Katatonia
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $42.42
Katatonia's live CD/DVD set features the doom-sayers at 2006's SummerBreeze fest. Set includes 4 songs from last year's amazing "Great Cold Distance" album, 4 off "Viva Emptiness" (2003), 2 off "Tonight's Decision" (1999) & 1 from "Discouraged Ones" (1998). Only 11 songs in under an hour, but a strong performance. Casual fans can probably skip it but really Discouraged Ones shouldn't miss it.
Zen and the Art of Total Fucking DestructionZen and the Art of Total Fucking Destruction by Total Fucking Destruction
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.95
Who says grindcore can't be poignant & fun? TFD take the disillusionment & righteous rage of Brutal Truth (whose drummer, Hoak, began this band), add some not-so-subtle A.C. style humor & let this baby burn. As a grind album, "Zen..." is way outside the box - the last 4 songs are acoustic, the instrumental parts are more distinct & varied, even guitar solos. A playground for your inner anarchist.
Overture of the WickedOverture of the Wicked by Iced Earth
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $2.21
Honestly, I only bought this because (1) I'm a huge Iced Earth fanboy, & (2) I really love the cover art. The one new song, "Ten Thousand Strong", is pretty good, akin to stronger moments from "Glorious Burden". The re-recorded "Something Wicked" trilogy is just sad. The original songs were epic metal masterpieces - the new versions are flaccid & soulless, drained of the dark power they once held.
CommandmentCommandment by Six Feet Under
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $2.96
I probably could've written this a year ago, since Six Feet Under are basically the Motörhead of death metal. You know exactly what you're going to get with each new album - ugly, straight to the bone, death 'n' roll grooves, violently vomited all over your skull. But it doesn't matter, SFU is a band you either like or you don't. Nothing I can say here will make much impact on that opinion.
Breath of the DemiurgBreath of the Demiurg by Demiurg
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $9.25
A new brutal & epic death metal project from devastation masters Dan Swanö & Rogga Johansson, also featuring the unholy drumming talents of Gorefest's Ed Warby & ethereal clean vocals from Satariel's Pär Johansson. Not yet available here in the US, I'm still trying to get a copy of this myself. Fellow death metal animals, I must advise you to do the same...
Tales from the TombTales from the Tomb by Evocation
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $14.00
Another imported gem from Sweden, "Tales From the Tomb" is the 1st full length album by this brutal death metal outfit. Reminiscent of classic Swedish death titans like Dismember & Unleashed - this CD even includes a cover of Entombed's "But Life Goes On". Unfortunately, this one isn't available here in the US yet either, so I'm still looking for a copy. I recommend you try this one out as well.
Nothing Less Nothing MoreNothing Less Nothing More by Killwhitneydead
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.25
Love 'em or hate 'em, you'll know KWD when you hear 'em. Their self-described mix of "grindcore, death metal, Slayer influenced dance floor hardcore (solos included) & layers of samples" is pretty damn hard to mistake for the local emo gang. So stop crying, start dying and indulge in some vile depravity, unrestrained violence & fathomless hate. It's more fun than a match & a gallon of gasoline...
For the Sick: A Tribute to EyehategodFor the Sick: A Tribute to Eyehategod by Various Artists
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.66
35 track compilation of excellently played, great sounding EYEHATEGOD cover songs, includes contributions from Brutal Truth, Hank Williams III, Alabama Thunderpussy, Lair of the Minotaur, The Mighty Nimbus, Byzantine, Mouth of the Architect, Kylesa, Swarm of the Lotus, Watch Them Die, Minsk, Unearthly Trance, Buried at Sea, The Esoteric, Triac & numerous other underground metal/hardcore bands.
AntichristAntichrist by Akercocke
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.89
Unfortunately, I just don't have the energy to maintain updated lists like this anymore. But please do yourself a favor & keep an ear open for the newest from AKERCOCKE, ENTOMBED, BEHEMOTH, NILE, PIG DESTROYER, OBITUARY, GOREFEST, OTEP, CANDLEMASS, ARCH ENEMY, VICIOUS ART, SYMPHONY X, DANZIG, HIGH ON FIRE, AMORPHIS, ILLOGICIST, ANGELCORPSE & THE PROJECT HATE MCMXCIX, among others.
