![]() | Monoliths & Dimensions by Sunn 0)))
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $8.84 Sunn 0))) have made an album that is often down right beautiful (not always, but often). Probably my favorite album of the year right now. Stunning.
![]() | Crack the Skye by Mastodon
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.51 I was the only person I knew who was disapointed by Blood Mountain. But this is some kind of monsterously awesome album.
![]() | Ox by Coalesce
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $9.41 Hardcore albums like this come by rarely. I'd put it up there with the best Converge and Dillinger Escape Plan. Maybe higher.
![]() | Black Cascade by Wolves in the Throne Room
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.99 Raw and unrelenting, a huge improvement over their previous two albums in every way, which were both very good.
![]() | Agorapocalypse by Agoraphobic Nosebleed
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.97 Don't prejudge this album. This is a huge improvement over everything else ANb has ever done (and I really like their early stuff). Best grindcore album so far this year.
![]() | Static Tensions by Kylesa
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.50 One of the most hyped up bands of the year. May not be groundbreaking, but is practically flawless. And 2 drummers are better than 1!
![]() | Wavering Radiant by Isis
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.09 Both more elegant and diverse than there other albums, arguably their best since Oceanic (though some are saying it's their best ever).
![]() | Memoria Vetusta II/Dialogue with the Stars by Blut Aus Nord
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.66 Sequel of sorts from one of the most innovative bands in black metal.
![]() | Absu by Absu
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.99 Very intense black metal/thrash (yes, the two occasionally meet). It has really grown on me.
![]() | Darkest Day by Obituary
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.90 Very surprised by how close to perfection this one comes, and I rarely say that about death metal. But it is Obituary, so...
![]() | Evisceration Plague by Cannibal Corpse
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.65 Cannibal Corpse remain relevent in a genre that has kind of lost some steam over the past few years (blame that on the rise of USBM). Another awesome album from the death metal veterans.
![]() | When I See the Sun Always Shines on TV by Nadja
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.45 Cover album from doom/drone/shoegaze/ambient duo Nadja. A couple songs don't work too well, but most are pretty incredible.
![]() | Winterhours by Tombs
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.95 Post-metal with a strong leaning to black metal, these guys are one of the most exciting bands on the rise.
![]() | Mind the Drift by Big Business
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.64 3rd album from the Melvins-associated band. Very solid, a lot of fun.
![]() | Clean Hands Go Foul by Khanate
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.48 This has been out on vinyl for a couple of months. It's a dark and unsettling masterpiece, but it's also their last, unfortunately.
![]() | The Ichthyologist by Giant Squid
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $8.78 One of the strongest releases of the year (period) finally gets a wide release. One of the best sludge bands around.
![]() | White Tomb by Altar of Plagues
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.72 Black metal that's influenced by Mogwai? So frickin cool.
![]() | Hard Times Hanging at the End of the World by Children
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $2.15 Old school thrash. A little complex, very good.
![]() | All Reflections Drained by Xasthur
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $9.93 Not the best Xasthur album, but sub-par Xasthur is still more interesting and powerful than most black metal.
![]() | Revelations of the Black Flame by 1349
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $10.24 I suppose I understand why some people hate this change in direction, but honestly I don't care, this album is something special.
![]() | Blood Oath by Suffocation
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.49 Obituary aren't the only death metal trailblazers that are still going strong. I love me some old school death.
![]() | What We All Come to Need by Pelican
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.98 Brings the post-rock/metal band back to their riff-oriented roots (City of Echoes was underrated, but not Pelican at their best). Also some welcome guest appearances, especially by Greg Anderson of Sunn.
![]() | Ganjahovahdose by White Mice
Buy new: $10.98 / Used from: $7.45 These guys are nuts, in a very awesome way. A mash of noise, grindcore, black metal, and a bunch of other genres.
![]() | Blue Record by Baroness
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.99 When Baroness get going, they are one of the greatest bands you'll ever hear. They get going just enough here to make this one of the best albums of the year.
![]() | Acclerated Living by Saviours
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $8.27 More old-school thrash, but these guys do it very well and find their own sound.
![]() | Necropolis by Vader
Buy new: $15.98 Their strongest album in recent years, maybe my personal favorite death album of the year.
![]() | Evangelion by Behemoth
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.50 It may be more interesting if they brought more black into the equation, but as it is, this further proves them to be one of the most powerful death bands in the world.
![]() | All Shall Fall by Immortal
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.95 Over all a very solid release from the black metal legends, first few songs are very good, as is the last track.
![]() | Pyramids with Nadja by Pyramids with Nadja
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $26.02 If you're a fan of both bands, you probably have a good idea in your head of what this should sound like, but you're probably wrong. The majority of this is dreamy ambient shoegaze with a few heavy drones and thundering blastbeats thrown in. Last track is more of what you'd expect from the two, and is incredible.
![]() | The Great Misdirect by Between the Buried and Me
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $9.18 Hyped up as their best album since Alaska, which may be true. Crazy good.
![]() | Dimensional Bleedthrough by Krallice
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $21.91 Their first album of avant-black metal drew some comparisons to jazz and math rock. This one is compared more to classical music, which makes way more sense. At first I thought it was over-ambitious, but it's been growing on me and is a pretty astounding achievement.
![]() | Swarth by Portal
Buy new: $13.99 To call this death metal (even though that's what it is) gives the wrong idea. Noisey, bizarre, atmospheric, and very dark, and one of my favorite albums of the year.
![]() | Those Whom the Gods Detest by Nile
Buy new: $13.99 I've lost track of how many veteran death bands have had come-back years in 09, but Nile is easily at the top of the bunch, this being their most intense, adventurous, and flatout best release in over a decade.
![]() | All the Dread Magnificence of Perversity by Gnaw Their Tongues
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.47 If you're the kind of person always looking for the most intense listen you can find, here ya go. Deranged and disturbing in concept, but you cannot deny the musical triumph.
![]() | Deflorate by The Black Dahlia Murder
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.48 There's no mistaking BDM. I can't say they're one of my favorite bands, but this album destroys.
![]() | Worship or Die by Hiems
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.73 Black metal that rocks pretty damn hard. One of the most pleasant surprises of the year. Well, as pleasant as an album this sonically assaultive can be.
![]() | Chicken Switch by Melvins
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.89 Noise artists given an entire Melvins album to remix in 4-5 minutes. Basically, however you feel about that concept will be a good indicator of how you enjoy this album.
![]() | Quantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt by Gorgoroth
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.87 The drama has settled down, and the black metal vets unleash a mildly awesome album.
![]() | Earthly Delights by Lightning Bolt
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.50 Classified as noise and associated with bands like Black Dice and Growing, but this album is straight-up metal, driven by huge riffs and thundering drums (meet your new favorite drummer, btw).
