Destroyer's RubiesDestroyer's Rubies by Destroyer
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.29
My first Destroyer cd from yet another highly talented Canadian band. Several songs remind me of mid-70s Dylan (Street Legal, Desire). Outstanding from start to finish.
Fort RecoveryFort Recovery by Centro-Matic
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.50
Not a flawed moment to be found. The consistentcy and flow throughout reminds me of a grungier Cowboy Junkies' The Trinity Session.
Black CadillacBlack Cadillac by Rosanne Cash
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.50
Beautiful songs about life, death and the loss of her parents. This will be one I pull out for many years to come.
Living with WarLiving with War by Neil Young
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.78
This was released at a time when we desperately needed songs to describe how we were feeling about the war, Dubya and his incompetent administration. I can't imagine a better set of songs on these subjects.
SurpriseSurprise by Paul Simon
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.54
Easily the biggest "Surprise" of the year. Never imagined he had a cd in him that would be this good.
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your AssI Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass by Yo La Tengo
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.90
They're back in a big way. Their best and most interesing cd in many years.
Orphans [Deluxe Limited Edition -- Bound 94 page booklet]Orphans [Deluxe Limited Edition -- Bound 94 page booklet] by Tom Waits
Buy used from: $30.19
Brilliant songwriting and songs. Like Bob Dylan's Bootleg cds (Vols. 1-3), these songs are first-rate and could have easily been used to make several great records. He's firmly cemented his position among the all-time great artists.
Modern TimesModern Times by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.90
An easy-going, well-written collection of songs from the living legend himself. Not as good as his last three studio cds (Oh Mercy, Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft), but excellent nonetheless.
Comfort of StrangersComfort of Strangers by Beth Orton
Buy new: $11.94 / Used from: $0.75
Significantly better than her last 2 cds. Up there with Trailor Park.
We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions (American Land Edition) (CD/DVD)We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions (American Land Edition) (CD/DVD) by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.96
Bruce brings new life to this collection of old, traditional songs and adds a new record to his catalog that ranks up there with his best.
Be He MeBe He Me by Annuals
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $0.77
My favorite new band of the year. Think XTC meets Sufjan Stevens.
Boys and Girls in AmericaBoys and Girls in America by The Hold Steady
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.99
Like last year's model, but better in every respect (songwriting, songs, consistency).
Nuclear DaydreamNuclear Daydream by Joseph Arthur
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.50
Another collection of great songs from one of the best singer/songwriters around. A little mellower and darker than his last one.
Till the Sun Turns BlackTill the Sun Turns Black by Ray LaMontagne
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.25
Even better than last year's cd.
Below the BranchesBelow the Branches by Kelley Stoltz
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.63
A great, consistent cd by a talented songwriter and musician. A throwback, psychodelic pop record.
The Trials of Van OccupantherThe Trials of Van Occupanther by Midlake
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.72
One of the more interesting cds of the year and probably the only with songs about 'stonecutters', buidling dry roofs and mountaineers. Has mostly a 70s, easy-going sound, but also has its edgy moments.
The Crane WifeThe Crane Wife by The Decemberists
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.74
A slightly different sound for them and better than their last 2 cds. Great songwriting, as usual.
A Blessing and a CurseA Blessing and a Curse by Drive-by Truckers
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $5.72
Fewer story-like songs than on their previous cds, but the result is the same: Another great DBT record.
Leaving SongsLeaving Songs by Stuart Staples
Buy used from: $4.25
Exactly what I expected from the lead singer/songwriter of the Tindersticks. Great use of horns and background vocals.
Powder BurnsPowder Burns by The Twilight Singers
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $4.90
An intense rock 'n roll record by Greg Dulli.
MeadowMeadow by Richard Buckner
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.95
Another solid cd by one of the best songwriters around.
Roots & CrownsRoots & Crowns by Califone
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $9.22
A very eclectic, but accessible record by a group of talented musicians.
GreenlandGreenland by Cracker
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.99
Not a big Cracker fan, but this cd has several great songs .
The InformationThe Information by Beck
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.52
Contains some of his best songs. A significant step up from last year's cd.
The Letting GoThe Letting Go by Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.10
His strongest and most consistent since I See A Darkness.
Keys to the WorldKeys to the World by Richard Ashcroft
Buy used from: $0.01
Not nearly as good as Human Condition, but has its moments.
NineteeneightiesNineteeneighties by Grant Lee Phillips
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $5.40
While generally not a fan of cover songs, the song selection coupled with Phillips' voice and acoustic setting makes this work.
