Excellent, but could be stellar.
I got this to protect my new iPhone. It will do that--no questions asked. It isn't water proof, but I wouldn't feel bad if I dropped it now. In fact, you could probably kick it and have it come out ok.

The one bad thing--and the only bad thing--is the screen protector. If you watch the YouTube video on installation, they tell you to rub your had across the screen and then install the iPhone. (This, in theory, gets a thin layer of skin grease between the plastic and the screen.) I've installed and installed and installed. I always get the oil slick look--a place where the plastic sticks to the screen. It isn't very visible when the phone is on, but makes it look pretty goofy when the phone is off. I may take the previous reviewer's idea and cut out the screen protector and get a stick on protector to go under it.

Bottom line: Protection, YOU BETCHA. Useable? YOU BETCHA. Easy, clean install? Not so much.

Protects you iPhone
Cons:

1) The plastic screen has a few noticeable "bubbles" (like a bad tinting job on a car window). Especially on white backgrounds you will notice it.
2) It make the phone larger all around so it probably does not attach well to some third party iphone docking stations/accessories.
3) It doesn't allow access to the silence ringer switch. However, there is a workaround - when you turn the ringer to the lowest volume, it silences the ringer.
4) Pictures aren't as clear - the plastic that protects the camera also obscures it a little.
5) The black case attracts dust in my pocket. However, the phone without a case would do the same.

Pros:
1) It is protected better from drops and accidental water. I've dropped my iPhone twice and it didn't even make a sound when it hit the floor. The rubber around the defense case seemed to absorb the impact well.
2) It is still fits comfortably in my pocket.
3) It gives me peace of mind that I will not accidentally damage my iPhone with drops or kids getting water on it.
4) The touch screen is still very sensitive and works well with touch.
5) It is a nice case that makes my iPhone seem more like a PDA, which I like.

I am very happy with my purchase of the OtterBox Defender Case Black for the iPhone. I'm glad I didn't have to pay full price also on Amazon.com. I would buy it again if I ever bought another iPhone.

Permanent "oil slick"
This is a very neat case EXCEPT it has a fatal flaw. The case produces an "oil slick" between the iphone screen and the case's screen protector. Otter addresses this problem by suggesting you rub your hand or face against the iphone screen before inserting it into the Defender case, however NOTHING I was able to do eliminated the "oil slick" look. I tried it squeaky clean, slightly oily and very greasy and yet the screen anomaly remained. I like the protection this case provides but I didn't buy a $500 phone so I could have blurry visuals. Avoid this particular Otter product.
