Editorial Reviews
From the Manufacturer
This is a professional fixed blade knife that takes a mighty serious cut at self defense. It features blackened¿and therefore non-reflective¿stainless steel in a 3/4" tang blade. It's lightweight. It's compact. It's effortless to carry, and agile to use. Importantly, the Santoprene®-covered nylon handle is very much at home in the hand of those who take on life's nastier tasks. Don't overlook the patented sheath. It lets you adjust the withdraw tension to suit your individual style. Clip it to your boot or belt or your strap, and you'll never be without a reliable back-up.
Customer Reviews
Great Knife
Gerber has always made a quality product and this knife is no exception. It is a great little knife that I have carried on my kit off and on for years. The very sturdy plastic sheath is extremely versatile and can be mounted in just about any position on your Molle gear. The adjustable tension feature on the sheath is great too, because it keeps the knife secure at any angle but still provides a smooth draw. A great knife and well worth the price. You can expect years of service from this blade.
The photo is an accurate representation of the knife.
Not as pictured
If the knife had been as pictured, it would get 5 stars. The Guardian (and the Mark I & II knives) has always been a nice knife, with classic 'sword-like' blade lines and extremely sharp. However, look at the knife in the picture, and imagine that someone has taken a grinder to it and ground the blade to where it now looks like a triangle, with straight lines from the hilt to the point and a ridiculously large and obtuse bevel instead of the acute and classy bevel of the original. Yuck. The only excuse to ever do this to a knife would be if you chipped the blade and had to reshape the blade to hide the fact (and then sell it at a garage sale for $5). Nowhere near worth the asking price. If you are a secret agent and want to use this for taking out one of the opposition, it might not make a difference, but if you just like knives and want one just to have one, find an older model; you'll be much happier.
Low grade metal, poor grind, cheaply made, badly sheathed
This knife gives the immediate impression that it was stamped and then ground from a piece of flat stock, then shaped and tempered and finally sharpened. Certainly, this is not a forged knife. Needs sharpenting and honing very badly right out of the box. Gee, I wonder if Gerber didn't just mold a synthetic handle onto one of those 3-for-$12 trash "throwing" knives?
Profile in the plan (top) view is weak: It should be less triangular and more spear-plan, like every other dagger and dirk. Mine doesn't suffer from the hollow-grind reported by another reviewer, but it is a straight rhombus in cross section, rather than the curved taper of my old Gerbers and of the Appleby, Sykes and Fairbairn type knives that Gerber emulates.
The plastic sheath might be reasonable in use, by my first reaction after using it is that it is a $1.16 piece of hard plastic trash. The "adjustable" tension does not hold consistently, so I don't expect much from it. I'll have to make my own sheath.
In short, I was expecting a good quality small, useful sheath knife like my 1974 Gerber boot knife, but this fails on every measure. It's a big disappointment, Gerber.
