Customer Reviews
This Book is a Gift
I have been reading and re-reading Rick Carson's gremlin books for twenty years. It is not an overstatement to say that they have radically changed my life, from helping me manage some significant anxiety issues, to taking healthy risks, to letting go of crippling habits that blocked my happiness and hurt my relationships. So I was excited to find A Master Class and dive in, but I assumed it would be mostly a refresher-course with a few new twists for an old hand like me. Instead, I was blown away by Carson's ability to send me deeper than ever into my heart of hearts (at what seemed like warp speed), where clarity rules the day and gremlins take a powder. There was something new and illuminating on every page. As big a fan as I am, I did not realize gremlin-taming could take me that much further into the love-filled existence he introduced me to so long ago. I can't say enough about this book. It's a gift.
Good advice on creating rewarding relationships!
The book explains that the gremlin is the monster in your mind that makes you miserable by keeping you stuck in your head and thus diverting you from the peace and contentment in your heart. The author notes the gremlin-training method was fully explained in his original work, Taming the Gremlin.
This new book on A Master Class in Gremlin-Taming is primarily about how to create rewarding relationships, primarily through a method described in his acronym, I CREATE, which stands for:
I = Intention
C = Connection
R = Respect
E = Environment
A = Authenticity
T = Trust
E = Experience
He then goes on to elaborate on each of the above 7 keys for creating good relationships. For instance, in speaking of Respect, he provides ways in which we can inadvertently demonstrate a lack of respect for people, including such actions as:
- Interrupting
- Rushing to share a similar experience
- Habitual lateness
- Jumping to conclusions, and many more.
The book is an easy, fun read and offers some really good advice on relationships. The one thing I would note is that if you haven't read his earlier books, "Taming Your Gremlin" and/or "Taming Your Gremlin, revised edition," you might want to read them first. Throughout the book, he continually references the earlier books, even noting what page numbers certain topics were discussed on. If you haven't read the earlier books (I hadn't), you can feel like you're at a disadvantage due to the continual references to the earlier books.
Transformative
Written with great wit and deceptive simplicity, this book goes directly to the heart of self-awareness, as opposed to analysis and judgment. Carson's guidance in getting a sliver of light between your mind's nay-sayer and your true self is insightful and practical. The freedom I experience by practicing his method of "just noticing" has enhanced relationship with self, family, friends, and counseling clients. The Zen Theory of Change--I change not by trying to change but by noticing how I am imprisoning myself in the moment--is effective and transformative.
