DESTROY your baby's frontal lobe development with this
Our baby used to babble and smile a lot until I started the book's rigid program. Sad to say, if you are observant enough, you would realize that your baby has changed. I got really worried and started to do more readings through other books, only to find out from Dr. Margot Sunderland's that sleep training or similar tactics to "train your child towards the so-called independence" is only destroying the frontal lobe development of the baby. & when the frontal lobe is not developed, these babies will not become truly happy people later in life when they grow up.
I have since stopped using Gina Ford's methods and our baby is back to being that happy baby we once knew. Also according to Dr. Sunderland, even if your baby does not cry or protest when you sleep-train him, it is because he is going through an internal depression (which is similar to grown-ups). When you observe babies who are on the Gina Ford's program vs. those whose parents do parenting by instincts, you will find that Gina Ford babies tend to sulk a lot, quietly, yes..but are they happy? I am not sure. I have friends who swear by Gina Ford not for the babies' sake but for their own. Do more research before you plunge into this program. After all, its your baby's life. You can use her schedule as a rough guideline as 1st time mothers to know roughly when to feed or let baby sleeep. But only as a rough guideline! The rigid program will give you a depress baby, not contented baby.
Wonderful
I am a first time mum. This book really did a good job. I recommended to every first time parent.
A good resource to creat your OWN schedule
As a teacher and behavior specialist, the principle that this book is based on - that babies, like all people, will do well with an established schedule - rings true. As adults we eat meals at the same time every day, tend to wake up at the same time every day and enjoy a routine of activities for the most part. As a teacher of young children with behavioral problems, I know that children do better when there is consistency and routine. Why would this be any different for babies? Granted, this rigid of a schedule may be unrealistic and some of the stages may not work for every baby, but that is why the baby has a parent to care for them and not a robot. The schedules can be a good guideline and can be adapted to meet the individual needs of your baby and your family. As always, and this is mentioned several times in the book, consult your pediatrician and make changes if your baby is not thriving. All in all, I think this book is a useful resource in helping you and your family create a consistent schedule to meet the needs of your baby and your family. Some thinking and adaptation will always be required. Good thing there are thinking and feeling humans implementing any program!
