![]() | The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy by Vicki Iovine
Buy used from: $3.88 This is the book I LOVED. I think I actually read it twice with my first pregnancy, once in the beginning and once towards the end when I needed something to do to pass the time. (It's amazing to think I actually had "extra" time at that point in my life!) I read the 2nd edition while pregnant with my second. It was just as good as the first; just updated.

![]() | Girlfriends' Guide to Baby Gear (Girlfriends' Guides) by Vicki Iovine
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $0.01 I couldn't have done my baby registry without this! She's real good at explaining what's useful and what's not, and what some things are even used for!
|
![]() | Best Baby Products, 9th Ed. (Best Baby Products) by Sandra J. Gordon
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $8.68 The 8th edition of this was out when I was doing my baby registry, and that wasn't nearly as useful as the Girlfriend's guide (above). A lot of the products weren't even rated the way you'd expect from Consumer Reports; they were just listed with a paragraph on things to consider when buying. It's worth borrowing from a friend or from the library, but don't get your hopes too high.

![]() | The Birth Book: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Safe and Satisfying Birth (Sears Parenting Library) by William Sears
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $1.96 I really loved this book for explaining the whole medical side of pregnancy and child birth. A lot of people think the Sears are biased towards natural childbirth. I knew that's what I wanted, so of course I didn't notice; I was just reading what I wanted to hear. I've heard the "Everything Birth Book" is just as informative without the Natural-Birth opinions, although I haven't read it myself.
|
![]() | Husband-Coached Childbirth : The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth by Robert A. Bradley
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $1.89 This was written by the man who developed the Natural Childbirth method we used. Yes, we went to the weekly Bradley classes for 12 weeks:) But I'm glad we did and we're still friends with the other couples/babies from our class. I remember this book as more about how/why his method works. The next book had more practical information, which was what we learned in the class.
|
![]() | Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way: Revised Edition by Susan McCutcheon-Rosegg
Buy new: $12.92 / Used from: $7.94 This is the book that I use to review what I learned in my Bradley classes 3 years ago. It goes over the phases of labor and how to handle each; what to do to try to determine if "this is it" or if you're just having pre-labor pains; doing your kegals; eating right...all the how-tos of preparing for natural childbirth.

![]() | So That's What They're For!: The Definitive Breastfeeding Guide 3rd edition by Janet Tamaro
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $6.00 I read this book BEFORE giving birth and am always so glad I did! I think I felt that I wouldn't have any of the problems that "so many women" have. Unfortunately, I had several problems the first day, like latch-on issues and sore nipples. Had I not read this book, I might have given up! Instead I got help from a Lactation Consultant and got our problems cleared up!
|
![]() | The Attachment Parenting Book : A Commonsense Guide to Understanding and Nurturing Your Baby by William Sears
Buy new: $11.19 / Used from: $6.70 I read this book before giving birth as well (can you tell I was anxious to have this baby?!) and again, was glad I read it ahead of time, especially since I was too tired the first few weeks of parenthood to read much of anything. Anyway, I agree with the Sears baby-philosophy described in this book. I feel my kids are such "happy babies" as everyone calls them because of this parenting style.

![]() | The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Baby Sleep Longer by Harvey Karp
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.95 I might have returned my first-born to the baby-store had it not been for this book. I read it the week after bringing her home. I re-read it with my second, and it was just as useful. (It's amazing how much you forget!) The tricks in this book really are amazing at calming newborns! They still have their moments, but knowing how to sooth them most of them time is invaluable!
|
![]() | The Nursing Mother's Companion: Revised Edition by Kathleen Huggins
Buy new: $13.18 / Used from: $7.90 This was great for all the details about nursing. It has a great description of proper latch-on technique, which really helped me! It also goes through stages of the nursing process and problems you may encounter, with suggested solutions, like how to introduce a bottle, starting solids, etc. DEFINITELY a must-have for all nursing moms!
|
![]() | Infant Massage--Revised Edition: A Handbook for Loving Parents by Vimala Schneider Mcclure
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $1.49 I think I got this book as a recommendation from the "Happiest Baby on the Block". I bought this and some baby massage lotion, and have enjoyed massaging my kids. I'm sure all touch is healthy for babies, but it was nice to have a little agenda that required it, so I never worried I wasn't giving enough cuddles.
|
![]() | The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two (Revised and Updated Edition) by William Sears
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $5.00 This is the Baby-Bible as far as I'm concerned. The How-Tos and explantaions cover everything from first baths to potty-training. It's the first place I look for any issues that come up, or even just to check out milestones to look for at different ages.
|
![]() | New First Three Years of Life: Completely Revised and Updated by Burton L. White
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $0.01 Although it's not a how-to as far as baby care, this is the book I always have out to check where my kids fall in their cognitive development. It gets wordy and repetitive at times, but it's worth getting through it. The toy recommendations have been right-on from the beginning. It's great to know the toys taking over your house are good ones, as opposed to useless money-wasters.
|
![]() | The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night by Elizabeth Pantley
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $5.21 I've read this several times, and am always keeping the solutions in the back of my mind as new problems emerge. I've never been successful at following through with "the plan" she helps you create, but things always improve a little when I incorporate these ideas and find ones that work for us.
|
![]() | Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $3.66 I bought this book thinking it would solve my sleep problems, but never had much success with his methods. He does provide a lot of information on sleep itself, and it gives advice for babies/children/teenagers, etc, so I still like having it around to consult.
|
![]() | The Girlfriends' Guide to Surviving the First Year of Motherhood by Vicki Iovine
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01 Not so much informative as it is "therapy" for the frazzled new Mom! There's definitely useful information in here, but I found the encouraging tone of the book what made it such a joy to read! (Can you tell I LOVE these Girlfriends' Guides?)
|
![]() | Reading with Babies, Toddlers and Twos (N/A) by Susan Straub
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.99 Convinced me it was worth reading to my baby even though it seemed pointless. She's an avid book-lover now!
|
![]() | Adventures in Tandem Nursing: Breastfeeding During Pregnancy and Beyond by Hilary Flower
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $8.39 I meant to read this one, but never found the time (can you imagine that?) I still want to; we'll see.
|
![]() | The Family Nutrition Book: Everything You Need to Know About Feeding Your Children - From Birth through Adolescence by William Sears
Buy new: $12.91 / Used from: $3.24 I just ordered this, and am looking forward to reading it based on the customer reviews.
|
![]() | The Baby Bistro Cookbook: Healthy, Delicious Cuisine for Babies, Toddlers, and You by Joohee Muromcew
Buy new: $15.61 / Used from: $11.11 Cute, easy recipes for those who want to cook. I've been very lazy and haven't tried many (I was so motivated when I bought it last year!) but I'm going to try to get back into cooking now that my son is moving on to table food.
|
![]() | The Girlfriends' Guide to Toddlers by Vicki Iovine
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01 Of course, I LOVED this book as with all the other Girlfriends' guides. Very useful advice in addition to helping you feel "normal" during your stay on Planet Toddler.
|
![]() | The Happiest Toddler on the Block: The New Way to Stop the Daily Battle of Wills and Raise a Secure and Well-Behaved One- to Four-Year-Old by Harvey Karp
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $6.35 We're about 1/2 way through the stages described in this book. I haven't been able to get into the "Toddler-ease", but my daughter's a really easy kid, I think. I HAVE noticed the Fast-food rule (repeat what they say: acknowledge what's going on, basically) works great every time. I think I'll be using this one more with my son, who I can already tell is much more fiesty than my daughter.
|
![]() | The No-Cry Discipline Solution: Gentle Ways to Encourage Good Behavior Without Whining, Tantrums, and Tears (Pantley) by Elizabeth Pantley
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $7.04 I borrowed this book from the library, and had to return it before I finished it. I read most of it, but can't remember as much as I'd like. I do remember thinking many/all of the solutions sounded very useful; I just can't remember them to use them! I've just ordered my own copy from Amazon, and am hoping for good results with my 2 year old daughter!
|
![]() | The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers: Gentle Ways to Stop Bedtime Battles and Improve Your Childs Sleep (Pantley) by Elizabeth Pantley
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $6.95 I'm still working through this, but have good expectations based on my success with the original No-Cry Sleep Solution book.
|
![]() | The No-Cry Potty Training Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Child Say Good-Bye to Diapers (Pantley) by Elizabeth Pantley
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.73 This is the only book I read on Potty-Training and it's all I needed (this time)! It has a quiz to help you decide if your child really is ready, and if YOU'RE ready, which is just as important, and it really helps you keep calm about the whole thing. I really think this book helped me select the right approach with my daughter, which has led to her successes with the potty so far.
|
![]() | The Successful Child: What Parents Can Do to Help Kids Turn Out Well by William Sears
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $1.99 I plan to read it very soon. Based on the reviews here on Amazon, it's exactly what I'm looking for.
|
![]() | Mothering Your Nursing Toddler by Norma Jane Bumgarner
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.99 Another one I haven't read but want to, since this is my situation.
|
![]() | The Nursing Mother's Guide to Weaning, Revised Edition by Kathleen Huggins
Buy new: $9.56 / Used from: $4.98 If you read my comments above, you probably know I should be reading this book! Yes, she's 2 and still nursing, along with her brother, which was not the plan! They say most kids wean themselves around the 6th month of pregnancy; clearly that was not the case with my daughter. Since then it seems like a bad idea: adjusting to the baby, potty-taining, etc. Maybe I should just get pregnant again:)
