| ATAD is non-denominational and distributes aid regardless of religious affiliation. However, the fact remains that the majority of Tajik citizens are Sunni Muslims and, although the country was largely secularized by the Soviet Union, the influence of Islam is increasing in some areas. We feel that an good understanding of Islam is important to understanding the past, present, and probable future of Tajikistan and Central Asia, and with that in mind we have selected a range of books on the subject, including general histories and outlines, sympathetic analyses and treatises, critiques from Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and analyses of the role of radical Islam (which has been largely suppressed in Tajikistan and the other former countries of the Soviet Union, but runs rampant in neighboring Afghanistan, where many ethnic Tajiks make their homes) in the world today. | ||
