Amazon.com Review
With an attractive glass measuring plate and compact size, this electronic kitchen scale blends functionality with style. From England’s original scale manufacturer Salter, the sensitive gauge of this scale provides precise measurement for the most elaborate recipe or detailed dietary needs.

Cooks place ingredients on a durable glass plate to weigh. The 7-inch square plate cleans easily, and its construction hinders residual flavors and staining for greater sanitation. Two lithium batteries power the electronic scale that features user-friendly perks including a low battery indicator, automatic zero, and automatic shutdown. For measurement with bowls or other containers, users need only place the empty container on the scale and press the power button to set the measurement at zero for isolated ingredient weights. The scale adapts to either the metric or imperial system and measures quantities up to 11 pounds or five kilograms. The scale displays increments of 1/8 ounces or 2 grams as fractions rather than decimals. Batteries are included with this scale. Salter offers a ten-year warranty on this product. The scale measures 7 by 8 by 1-1/4 inches and weighs 1.55 pounds. --Jessica Reuling

Electronic Scale5
I own the Soehnle scale that looks like a flying saucer (recommended by Cook's Illustrated magazine). Frankly, this Salter is better--smaller footprint and oz. to grams easily--so now I give it to my cooking friends for presents.

Ultimately a disappointment3
I had great hopes for these scales, and was quite pleased initially. They were attractive, sleek and seemed to measure weights very well. I liked how I could measure things by zeroing out the scale with a mixing bowl on the scale, then adding ingredients -- four or sugar or whatever -- to the bowl and getting a measure of the ingredients.

After a couple of years, though, it was time to replace the lithium batteries and that's when the trouble started. There are two lithium batteries, each behind a little twist-to-open plastic door on the bottom of the scale. One inserts the edge of a coin into the groove in the middle of this twist-to-open door and, well, twists it open.

One door opened easily. The other did not. I tried everything I could think of to get this stupid plastic door open, but repeated attempts with the edges of coins, a kitchen knife, a very wide screwdriver -- all of these succeeded only in stripping and scarring the plastic groove, but not opening the door. Finally, I gave up and pried the damn thing open with a knife, completely breaking the immovable door. I pried the lithium batteries out -- they were held in place with a little metal clip that also didn't want to seem to budge -- and inserted new ones. Whew!

The kitchen scale didn't work.

It was only after extensive web research that I found the website for manufacturer of this item (salterhousewares.com) and have contacted them, because this item supposedly has a 10 year warranty. I haven't heard from them yet.

Perfect kitchen scale5
Accurate, elegant design and aesthetically pleasing. Everything it says it is. Would probably go for a manual off button in lieu of such a short auto-off, but I'm definitely glad for the auto-off feature, considering how much I have going on whirling around my kitchen.
