With the audience appeal of The Grass Crown by Colleen McCullough and The Last King by Michael Curtis Ford, Korinna - Daughters of the Fire, I, is an intense tour-de-force into the history of Ancient Greece, Rome, Anatolia, and the plight of women in those times. Women who had no say in the running of their own lives, and women who only lived for their men who were then slain in battle. Locale and Time: Korinna, Daughters of the Fire, I, begins during the first of the three Mithriadic Wars fought between the Kingdom of Pontus and the Republic of Rome for control of Anatolia/Asia Minor, from 89 B.C. onward. Ephesus, Sardis and Pergamum, three famous cities of Antiquity, provide the stage upon which the novel revolves. By Roman times, the matriarchal religion of Anatolia had changed, though the female principle was still dominant. The original mother-fertility goddesses were now identified with the love goddesses of Greece and Rome, Aphrodite and Venus. Korinna, an orphan novice of Artemis, and the Holy Women (priestess-prostitutes of Aphrodite) Melitta and Chrysanthe, born during a time of chaotic transition in Anatolian history that pitted not only nation against nation, but parent against child, were truly Daughters of the Fire that had swept this ancient land.

A Clash of Civilizations
Kristina O'Donnelly's latest book in the Lands of the Morning series is a headlong immersion in a pivotal time when Anatolia was the battleground in the contest between Rome and the last of the Hellenic empires. Korinna, the main character and namesake of the novel, mirrors in her life and travels the issues and undercurrents of the times that culminate in the wars between Mithradates of Pontus and an aggressive but unsettled Roman Republic. The winner will rule the Western World.
O'Donnelly has the ability to bring into the light all the nuances of Greco-Roman culture and its clashes. Her knowledge of the period and feeling for the land are contagious. Her understanding of the occult and its place in the lives of the people of the time are on the mark. Put together with sex and action that's more than a tease and you have a recipe for an exciting read. Don't miss it.
Spellbinding, hard-hitting, fast moving
This is the sixth novel I've read by Kristina O'Donnelly, and once again she has come through for me. This is a spellbinding, hardhitting, and fast-moving historical novel that manages to be chock-full-of-information too. It is not as long as The Horseman or Andromakhe, but I understand there will be a sequel. I look forward to it. Recommended read. You won't be disappointed.
The past brought back to life
Once again O'Donnelly has taken me back in time on an incredible journey with her gifted writing. I could not put this book down and I'm truly looking forward to the sequel!! It is easy to feel like one is in the story with Korinna - you journey with her through the uncertainty of her early life, you long to find her secrets revealed, and you struggle with her as she tries not to love her true soul-mate. Some of the scenes in this book are extremely vivid, erotic, at times violent, and also gentle and assuring as well... This book is the past brought back to life. An experience you do not want to miss!!
