Two kittens snuggle up to their papa as he reads a bedtime story. A baby skunk gets a nice backrub before she climbs into bed. A daddy bears sings quietly as his baby drifts off to sleep. Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Riley and her daughter, newcomer Nakamura, team up for a look at the bedtime rituals of eight parent-and-child animal pairs. "Mice brush their teeth/ without a care./ They make a mess/ most everywhere," accompanies a scene of mild bathroom chaos that may well remind fans of Riley's Mouse Mess (the book itself makes a cameo appearance in a scene of a feline family's bedtime reading). The rhymes are workmanlike ("Baby Bear will softly sigh/ as Daddy sings a lullaby"), but the humorous details of the vignettes (as Little Skunk prepares for bed, a ladybug sprays perfume in the air) and Riley's signature velour-like textures exude the warmth of familial connections. One especially congenial full-bleed spread toward the end gathers all eight families together as they gaze up at a full moon. Ages 3-up.

From School Library Journal
reSchool-As a mother rabbit settles her bunny in for the night she says, "And now all children, just like you, get ready for their bedtime, too." So begins the gentle verse that describes how ducklings, mice, puppies, "Cats in jammies," and assorted other animals go to bed, as each parent lovingly adjusts the covers, reads a book, or sings a lullaby. Riley's cheery, oversized illustrations will bring smiles to toddlers as they look for details in the pictures, such as a ladybug who sweeps up the room, rows in the bathtub, and uses a perfume atomizer in the skunks' home. Rhyming couplets complete the bedtime ritual. A warm and fuzzy choice that is sure to inspire sweet dreams.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Ages 1-3. This affectionate bedtime book will send little ones off to sweet, sweet dreamland. When a carrot constellation takes shape in the starry sky, Bunny and all the other animal children get ready for bed. Richly textured, impishly detailed, pastel illustrations tuck the humor of true-to-life human bedtime preparations into the animals' nightly rituals. Mice string the bathroom in a web of "Rodental Floss" as they brush their teeth. An evergreen air freshener dangles over the couch where a baby skunk receives a soothing, pre-bed back rub, and an infant squirrel is rocked in an ingeniously engineered walnut-shell cradle. Other touches include a trio of serenading crickets, a carrot pull-toy, and bunny slippers with eyes that close as their wearer becomes drowsy. Like Papa Bear singing a lullaby to his wide-eyed cub, other animal dads and moms are pictured doing their part to calm active youngsters at day's end. The page-filling pictures provide warm embellishment for the rhyming text, which will make an irresistible read-aloud. Parents and children will snuggle warmly as the soothing rhyme flows gently to the last endearing sentiment: "Close your eyes. To sleep you go. Here's one more kiss . . . I love you so." Ellen Mandel

ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!5
My Children, My Mom, and I are great fans of Linnea Riley's book "Mouse Mess". We were so excited to learn that her daughter had written her 1st book and that she had done the illustrations. We actually got a preview of the book back in November, and need-less to say, we fell in love with it. The March release seemed like such a long time to wait for something so warm and sweet! The words and illustrations are just wonderful...it gives you the warm fuzzies. I want everyone I know to have this wonderful book :)!!!

SONG OF NIGHT : It's Time To Go To Bed5
I am a fan of Linnea Riley and have her 2 previous books MOUSE MESS and THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS. I have been waiting for THE SOND OF NIGHT's publication which has the added benefit of being created with her teacher daughter, Katherine. I ordered multiple copies from Amazon.Com and am thrilled to have SONG OF NIGHT with the sweet rhyming text that Linnea has illustrated to perfection with big, fuzzy, endearing animals. Be sure to see what the lady bugs are doing as the animals prepare for bed and the bunny slippers even get in on the "going to sleep act"! There is much more subtle, gentle humor to enjoy as the book is read. I took THE SONG OF NIGHT recently to a women's meeting which included young mother's to grandmothers. Their response was one of enthusiam and amusement as each story page was read and illustrations revealed their humor and charm. The young mothers want to get the books for their children as well as for baby shower gifts and the grandmothers want to get SONG OF NIGHT to read to their grandchildren. The books I ordered will be given to my friends who are soon-to-be grandparents and also for a housegift for a grandmother friend of three. I am keeping a copy for myself because as a former teacher, I love children's literature, especially with a book like SONG OF NIGHT that exudes delight, warmth and love.I have a feeling this book will be another award winner.

My Daughter's Favorite5
My sister bought this book as a gift for my daughter and it is one of her best purchases ever. My daughter is only one year old but every night she would choose this book for her mother to read to her. The Illustrations are both soft and warm. The rhymes are soothing. As a whole, the book illustrate the closeness and happiness of a family. A excellent book for all ages.
