Product Description

Open the covers of this extraordinarily inventive, interactive book to find that the cats inside are ready to play — in very surprising ways.

There they are, purring under a blanket. But not for long! Three sprightly cats named Tiny, Moonpie, and Andre are eager to involve you in their games, whether it's tossing a ball of yarn (oof!), lifting flaps to find them in boxes (comfy), or getting caught in a pillow fight (biff!). As their antics get wilder still, they'll need a kind soul to blow on the page to dry them off! With an irresistible story that directly engages the reader, this book's clever design and bright, gestural illustrations make for cat-tastic lift-the-flap fun.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1—Through a series of instructive lift-the-flap pages, children meet Tiny, Andre, and Moonpie, three colorful and friendly moggies that want to play with yarn, and boxes, and readers. Each turn of the page is celebrated by the cats as it reveals not only what lies ahead, but even the option of going back a page when the appeal of yarn is almost too much to relinquish. The book finishes with an invitation to come back another day, which is no doubt the wish of any cat, or book—to be revisited and adored again and again. The artwork, like the story, is simple yet effective—bold, primary colors are set against white space with elements of collage thrown in to provide texture and a sense of reality. This book joins Mélanie Watt's Chester (Kids Can) and Peter Catalonatto's Ivan the Terrier (S & S, both 2007) as picture books that are not so much reading experiences as explorations of how a book is a creative, interactive tool. Buy in duplicate, because these kitties will get a lot of attention.—Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA

"* "The great thing about this is that it is more than a one-joke story and works on several different levels... It is a very clever book - and enormous fun." The Guardian on The Adventures of a Nose (0744594642)"

Hilarious fun for me and my 4 year old!5
This book is one of the cutest and funniest books ive read with my 4 year old son! We both giggled non-stop thru this book! We have read it every night since we got it and he laughs like it was the first time he heard it, every time. Priceless memory making!

After having read There Are Cats in This Book, I can swear that there are, in fact, cats in this book. Fun, high maintenance cats. This picturebook does an excellent job of engaging young readers from end page to end page. It includes multiple direct orders to its readers and many tabs to flip. I do foresee one potentially disastrous page: At one point the cats manage to get drenched. Afterwards, the reader is told to "blow on the page..." to dry them. I imagine that when many young readers attempt to make a gentle breeze may accidentally result in the creation of a spit storm drenching the page, which could be a problem if the book is a classroom copy.

This story is a fun and cute read that presupposes that its reader will be fond of cats (or will become fond of the cats as they read). But it does manage to create tension and (hopefully) enthusiasm as the child flips through the pages.

Activities to do with the book:

This is probably best as a one-on-one read. It's good for working on fine motor skills (flipping the many tabs, turning the pages themselves) and noticing cause and effect with the cats' actions.
This book could be used to help prepare a child for sleep.
Also, if a reader is familiar with cats, they could create their own ideas or illustrations for other things that a cat might do. Or the general structure of the book could be adopted by a parent or teacher to accommodate another animal with the child or class creating more adventures.

Favorite Quotes:

"The cats aren't on this page."

"Turn the page! What are you waiting for?"

Lots of fun5
This book is a lot of fun to read. The cats talk directly to the reader, and even tell him/her what to do sometimes. This just became the book all of my son's friends will be getting for their birthdays this year!
