Good for travel
We bought this baby cot for travel - as regular travel play pens are heavy and not very compact. We have used it about a dozen times - family, hotel rooms, and European travel.
It is basically a baby tent. I found it fairly easy to set-up and take down, but my husband had some trouble and could not figure it out. It also took me a few tries to figure out how to fold it and the mattress so they would all fit into the bag for storage (press out all the air - it may take several times and fold it into a long strip and fold it again making a long rectangle). Now it is no problem. It is not something you would want to figure out when it is late at night and have little light to work with. Put it together and take it apart at home before you travel with it. Also, air out the mattress - it smelled a little like plastic when we first had it - a regular crib sheet will fit over it with some wrangling.
It has been great for travel - can put it in my suitcase - medium sized suitcase and I know my child will have a safe, clean place to sleep (and I can sleep knowing she is safe). My daughter, who does not mind sleeping in playpens, does NOT like sleeping in this as well. It is very dark inside and hard for her to stand up - slanted sides. Now that she is getting bigger and can see over the top, she doesn't seem to mind as much.
The product is well constructed and it is sturdy if put together properly. I think it is a little pricey, but I am glad we made the purchase. It is much easier than having our daughter sleep with us when there is no crib for her. A few nights of that made me purchase this baby cot.
If you are shorter than 5'4" I probably would not get this product. I am 5'4" and I can barely place my sleeping daughter into it without waking her. Much easier for taller folks. Another company makes a travel bed (I think it is called the Pea Pod) for babies and toddlers that zips at ground level and is much cheaper. I do not know if it would work any better though.
Overall I am happy with the Travel Cot, although it is not a perfect solution. It has served us well on our travels.
great for travel
We've used this since our daughter was less than a year old, and she's nearly three now. It's one of the best baby purchases we made, and definitely THE single most important thing we bought for travel.
It IS like a tent - a place for your infant/toddler to sleep & hang out that is sheltered from the elements of the hotel room, grandma's house, the backyard, or wherever. The mattress is just like a mini-ThermaRest, which to me is a huge step up from the plastic inflatable air mattress that's in the PeaPod. The whole thing is easy and intuitive to set up and is sturdy, so much so that when our daughter plays in hers and is grabbing at the side rails and jumping back and forth, I know that it won't tumble over or collapse.
It's easy to take down and we've never had a problem fitting both the tent and the mattress into the carrying bag. The great thing is that the whole thing weighs about 6 pounds and it's small enough to fit into our luggage. Plus I love that the opening is at the top like a crib rather than at the side -- I think that if we would have had a side-opening product when our daughter was younger she would have crawled right out of it at naptime!
Great travel crib
We got this travel crib as a gift, and after using it for 7 months, I am still very happy with it. If you have experience setting up tents, it's very easy and intuitive to assemble. And I disagree with the other review saying you can't put the "therma-rest" mattress in the bag with the cot - it fits fine if you deflate the mattress well. Our baby is now nearly 10 months old and sleeps very well in this crib - it's dark and cozy (which he likes), the mattress is comfortable (I can attest to this, as I generally crawl in there and curl up with my baby and spend some mommy nursing time in there with him before he falls asleep), and when it's zipped at the top, it holds heat in well. We have taken this travel crib to Europe, B&B nights away, etc., and it fits in a suitcase (although it takes up most of one suitcase) and it has a relatively small footprint. We haven't tried using it outside. Overall, I think this is a great travel crib.
