Editorial Reviews

Album Description
"Conductor Jerry Junkin brings just the right touch of levity and concentration from the performers. You'll find yourself tapping your toes or conducting your own imaginary musicians ... or maybe not so imaginary--once again, Reference Recordings' `Prof. Johnson' has worked his magic on this HDCD. The instruments are true to tone ... the transient attacks are sharp and clear, and the hall ambience is excellent." - THE AUDIO ADVENTURE

The Dallas Wind Symphony is America's premier professional wind band, and Jerry Junkin is the worthy successor of Frederick Fennell, the "godfather of wind bands". David Maslanka is the most important living composer for wind band. A Child's Garden of Dreams is his greatest hit, and In Memoriam is a world-premiere recording. Symphony No. 4 and A Child's Garden of Dreams receive their first professional recordings.

Customer Reviews

Stunning original voice5
I came across David Maslanka by accident - through Amazon's "Customers who bought this also bought" listings. The sound world created in all three works here is mesmerising, at times moving as in "the Child's Garden of Dreams", at others, awsomely thrilling, as in the latter half of the "Fourth Symphony". The playing and recording are almost holographic. A clear winner on all counts. My only regret is that Maslanka's music is written almost entirely for winds - though he manages to expand the horizons of the sound of the wind band far beyond what you might think was possible.
