They are packed so that they are ready to hang. Mobiles are a traditional craft in Denmark, but the modern mobile was created in 1954 by Christian Flensted and his wife Grethe. Their first design, the Stork mobile, was a great success, and now flies all over the world.

Flimsy and small2
The picture makes the item look great, but it is paper-thin plastic-coated, and rather small and flimsy. I gave it as a gift from a baby registry, and was embarrassed to be giving such a tiny gift - especially because it costs $40!
