Barbra Streisand's fourth and best television special, A Happening in Central Park (September 15, 1968) is refreshingly free of gimmicks and concepts. It's just Streisand with an orchestra in front of a live New York audience. "The Nearness of You," "Cry Me a River," "I Can See It," "Second Hand Rose" (the audience enjoys singing along)," "People," and "Happy Days Are Here Again." Previously released as part of the five-disc Barbra Streisand: The Television Specials. --David Horiuchi

A Concert In Central Park
Barbra Streisand has a wonderful concert presence and this one is very good. She was very good and the audience in the park as well as the people at home are enthralled with her beauty and her singing ability. She truly has a gift and is very talented. Makes me miss musical variety programs.
It's great...but there's MORE
Seeing Streisand live in the 60s was truly sublime. Her voice soared with thrilling ease and she almost made every song she sang, her own. There's no quibbling with what's here -- it's all great. But, they didn't just shut off the cameras for the songs that are not included on both the alblum (now CD) and the special which aired on CBS (an hour-long affair, which features about 50 minutes of music).
That material remains locked away in the vaults and there's no excuse for not putting it out there now.
Yes, we all know that she flubbed the words on 2 or 3 songs...fine ...whatever. Wow, Barbra is human! It actually makes her more interesting than ever. That such things put her into a panic and had her shy away from live performances for over 20 years makes having the full version of this released all the more important!
Anyway, go to the vaults, dig that stuff out and put out the definitive records of what she did back on that night in 1967 in Central Park. I wasn't there...and I'd sure like to see it now!
The audience were the luckiest people in the world
When Barbra Streisand did her famed concert in Central Park, it was in an effort to jump start her then-fading singing career. It is hard to say whether it was successful or not, but what can be said is that it produced not only a popular television special, but also a lovely live album.
This is notable for being one of Barbra's few concerts that do not cost a fortune to attend, use itself as a platform for Barbra Streisand's politics, or feature a who's who of entertainment. This is simply Barbra Streisand coming out, singing some of her well-known songs at this point, and just having a good time along with the audience. It also features a more spunky Barbra Streisand, since not only does she tell some cleverly tongue in cheek stories (such as the "Folk Monologue"), but also sings some cute songs (such as her take on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"). It isn't just humor, though. She also sings some moving versions of "People," "Happy Days are Here Again," and "Cry Me a River."
While not exactly a classic, or even a must have album, this is a very nice example of Barbra Streisand while her head was still straight, and before stage fright took away her relaxed stage presence. It's a beautiful recording.
