Oracle Bones: A Journey Through Time in China (P.S.)Oracle Bones: A Journey Through Time in China (P.S.) by Peter Hessler
Buy new: $11.48 / Used from: $2.68
Part of my China series. A little dry sometimes.
Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body (Vintage)Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body (Vintage) by Neil Shubin
Buy new: $9.86 / Used from: $6.18
Part of my Evolution series. One of the better books I've read about it. Totally loved this.
The Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Usable Trim, Scraps, and BonesThe Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Usable Trim, Scraps, and Bones by Anthony Bourdain
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $3.67
Bourdain's personal style is sometimes annoying, but he's actually about something; he's not just a chef, traveler and eater of gross stuff. He has a philosophy that you can explore a culture through its food. He's more important than people realize.
Wild Swans : Three Daughters of ChinaWild Swans : Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang
Buy new: $11.52 / Used from: $1.95
More from the China series, and better than Oracle Bones. Terrific book.
GhostwrittenGhostwritten by David Mitchell
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.49
Oh awesome, a sentient computer. That hasn't been done before. I don't see the big deal with this book, man.
Amazing Rare Things: The Art of Natural History in the Age of DiscoveryAmazing Rare Things: The Art of Natural History in the Age of Discovery by David Attenborough
Buy new: $24.75 / Used from: $16.77
I love Attenborough. Here's him geeking out over Da Vinci. Does that sound awesome? Right, because it is.
Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and WarMayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War by Nathaniel Philbrick
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $1.81
Glad I read it, although it wasn't the most engrossing thing I've read.
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed AmericaThe Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.24
Fun little book.
Into The Jungle: Great Adventures in the Search for EvolutionInto The Jungle: Great Adventures in the Search for Evolution by Sean B. Carroll
Buy new: $14.58 / Used from: $9.49
Not bad, but the first part is a bit too elementary and the last part is a bit too technical.
Tropical Nature: Life and Death in the Rain Forests of Central and South AmericaTropical Nature: Life and Death in the Rain Forests of Central and South America by Adrian Forsyth
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $2.95
Exhaustive and very cool rundown of rain forest ecology. I already knew much of it, but still useful. If you're looking for an intro to rain forests, this is a good place to go.
Revolutionary Road (Movie Tie-in Edition) (Vintage Contemporaries)Revolutionary Road (Movie Tie-in Edition) (Vintage Contemporaries) by Richard Yates
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
Perceptive about human emotions and behavior, which is cool. Excellent book. Have not seen the movie yet.
The Aye-Aye and I: A Rescue Journey to Save One of the World's Most Intriguing Creatures from ExtinctionThe Aye-Aye and I: A Rescue Journey to Save One of the World's Most Intriguing Creatures from Extinction by Gerald Durrell
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $2.67
Durrell is terrific, although I wish he'd shut up about his genitalia. Really enjoyed this book.
Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to CapetownDark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Capetown by Paul Theroux
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $1.99
Liked it at first, but Theroux's endless whining and self-congratulating gets tiring.
Why Evolution Is TrueWhy Evolution Is True by Jerry A. Coyne
Buy new: $18.45 / Used from: $9.60
Maybe not new info if you're up on your evolutionary biology, but clearly and entertainingly written, and Coyne effectively smacks down all the usual arguments against evolution. Very well done.
The Last Days of the IncasThe Last Days of the Incas by Kim MacQuarrie
Buy new: $12.20 / Used from: $9.80
I wish there was more information available about the Incas pre-Pizarro, but there really isn't; what there is is here, along with a detailed and engrossing account of the Spanish conquest of the Incas. Excellent stuff and a gripping story.
The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2007The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2007
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $0.01
Just terrific. Every essay is good in its own way. Loads of stuff to think about.
A Day at El BulliA Day at El Bulli by Ferran Adria
Buy new: $32.97 / Used from: $30.67
It's awfully high on itself, which I suppose is to be expected; there are some terribly interesting passages along the way. I got it with a 40% off coupon and I don't think it'd be worth it without one, but I do like it.
The Boilerplate Rhino: Nature in the Eye of the BeholderThe Boilerplate Rhino: Nature in the Eye of the Beholder by David Quammen
Buy new: $7.04 / Used from: $0.55
Man, I love Quammen. This makes a good break from whatever else you're reading - if you get sick of it, you can pop this open and read an essay or two. He never disappoints.
Into the Heart of BorneoInto the Heart of Borneo by Redmond O'Hanlon
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $0.01
Eh. Kinda cutesy.
A Voyage Long and Strange: On the Trail of Vikings, Conquistadors, Lost Colonists, and Other Adventurers in Early AmericaA Voyage Long and Strange: On the Trail of Vikings, Conquistadors, Lost Colonists, and Other Adventurers in Early America by Tony Horwitz
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $2.52
Nicely done. Horwitz isn't for everyone; he likes to combine pop history with his own travelogues, which turns some people off. But he's easy to read, and (from what I can gather) he gets his facts straight. For folks like me who need an easy introduction to one phase of history or another, he's pretty useful.
The Fortress of SolitudeThe Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $2.60
Loses a tiny bit of momentum 2/3 of the way through with an abrupt shift in time and person, but gets it back in time for the end. Terrific book.
Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman RepublicRubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic by Tom Holland
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $3.81
Awesome.
A Briefer History of TimeA Briefer History of Time by Stephen Hawking

Terrifically fun to read.
The Maya, Seventh Edition (Ancient Peoples and Places)The Maya, Seventh Edition (Ancient Peoples and Places) by Michael D. Coe
Buy new: $16.20 / Used from: $8.48
Extremely dense, and sometimes hard to stay into, but very informative.
What Is the What (Vintage)What Is the What (Vintage) by Dave Eggers
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $4.00
You know what? Dave Eggers is a really good writer.
Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs: A Popular History of Ancient EgyptTemples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs: A Popular History of Ancient Egypt by Barbara Mertz
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $8.00
Mertz rules my face. As far as popular histories of three thousand years in less than five thousand pages go, this is the best.
Red Land, Black Land: Daily Life in Ancient EgyptRed Land, Black Land: Daily Life in Ancient Egypt by Barbara Mertz
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $9.07
If anything, better than "Temples, Tombs" etc.
The Mapmakers: Revised EditionThe Mapmakers: Revised Edition by John Noble Wilford
Buy new: $11.84 / Used from: $4.72
I'm a dork and I love maps, so I thought I'd enjoy this book - but it's a little too boring even for me.
Down the Nile: Alone in a Fisherman's SkiffDown the Nile: Alone in a Fisherman's Skiff by Rosemary Mahoney
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $3.65
Wonderful.
The Classical World: An Epic History from Homer to HadrianThe Classical World: An Epic History from Homer to Hadrian by Robin Lane Fox
Buy new: $14.78 / Used from: $4.94
It moves fast, but it's a great introduction to an awful lot of history.
A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian TrailA Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.54
You pretty much know what you're getting with Bill Bryson, and you either like him or don't. I like him pretty well.

Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $4.52
The Trojan War: A New HistoryThe Trojan War: A New History by Barry Strauss

Meh.
