A great MIDI pad controller, for cheap.

Product Description

The nanoPAD from Korg is a slim line USB powered pad controller that provides a huge amount of controller functions for triggering drum samples and other uses. The unit features 12 pads, and an X-Y pad with "Roll" and "Flam" modes. The latter is useful for programming realistic drum grooves. In addition to triggering sounds and loops, the pads can also transmit control change messages, allowing the unit to emulate certain mixing functions, such as soloing or muting mixer tracks, and turning objects on and off. An additional switch is provided that can recall any one of four scenes. These scenes allow all the controls on the unit to be set up in several specific configurations.

The Little Engine That can4
I am new to midi devices. I purchased a mixer with midi capabilities which opened me up to new possibilities. Soon after the mixer I purchased scratchlive and realized why midi is a great tool to incorporate into my setup. The one issue began when I realized to use midi meant to lose a portion of the mixers functionality. Thus the nanopad.

The size alone makes it worth the wait. Right out of the box, I was able to asign functions to the pads themselves. The use of the scenes multiplies the pads to the point where I have an abundance of trigger options. I have not used it in conjunction with the software yet (does not come with the unit). It must be downloaded from Korg.
One con I will mention is that I wish the scenes could be moved in a two way fashion so that I can move between scene 1 and 2 with one click vs having to cycle 2 through 4 and back to one. However this is more of an annoyance not a deal breaker.
I am amazed that I have gained all of this functionality for this low price. I feel like I owe somebody somewhere some more money. Then again in this economy.
Enjoy

Killer, however....5
Korg as usual did a great job with this unit and the price is great.

HOWEVER, What is up with the EZDrummer / ToonTrack, software?? Keep in mind this is not a Korg product, just something Korg thru in as a bundle so, I do not have an issue with Korg.

I Never got a response from EZDrummer / ToonTrack product key did not work, email support did not work, password retreval did not work, validation did not work. Simply left me hanging with NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT and never got to use there product. Got caught up in a loop of a crappy website and support. I had met them at the 2009 NAMM show in LA, Nice but no thanks If you can't provide simple access to help or back you your products I AM NOT interested. Not friendly at all. I will get my software from a reliable source. So sad

too much fun5
Twelve drum pads. XY control surface. Flam. Roll. Small enough to hide in your messenger bag.

I plugged the nanoPAD into my mac, and GarageBand saw it immediately. After a few minutes, I left my MacBook on the desk, put the nanoPAD in my lap, leaned back, and started tapping out beats. When I finally put the nano down, well over an hour had passed.

The pad feel is great - not too firm but not too rubbery. The pads themselves are fairly small, but that makes it easier to work with more than two drums at a time. I'd almost like to see a drum controller with pads just large than the tips of my fingers.

After years of paying sky-high prices for audio gear that always seemed to have something missing, I'm blown away by Korg's nano series. Each controller does its job well and at a price that shouldn't break anyone's bank. Korg blew everyone away with the Electribe series a decade ago, and they are doing it again with the nano controllers.

These nanos are toys - not because they are cheap (though they are inexpensive) but because they are so much fun.
