Must have book for Chinese Official rules
In January of 1998, the State Sports Commission of China officially recognized Mahjong as its 255th sport. This book illustrates the 81 hands of the new Official Chinese rules as promulgated by the Commission. It took the Commission two years to create the first uniform set of rules for international competition. The first World Mahjong Competition took place in Tokyo in 2002.
In comparison to the Classic Chinese and Classic Japanese rules, the new Chinese Official rules are more challenging, requiring more knowledge and strategy. They expand the use of the "chow" (set of three tiles in numerical sequence) as a means of gaining points, as opposed to the traditional "pong" (set of three identical tiles) or "kong" (set of four identical tiles). I use this book as a reference while I playing mahjong software. I think The New Mah Jong is indispensable for anyone wanting to learn Chinese Official.
