If you are only going to buy one book, get this one. The first edition is available online, free, this is the 3rd edition. I have the second edition and refer to it almost everytime I brew. One of three books everyone recommends as a first book - the third is "Homebrewing for dummies" which I've never read.

Lots of people recommend this, but I don't - I tend to like more technical books. The author is very friendly and folksy but never left me with confidence that I was doing it right. Zillions of people have learned to brew with this book.

Homebrewing - Volume IHomebrewing - Volume I by Al Korzonas

This is a really excellent 3rd or 4th book. Its a little bit dated, and really focuses on the extract brewer. I really really really hope he publishes volume 2 which I would buy in a minute. Absolutely THE best troubleshooting guide in print. Ton of great info in this book
Beer CapturedBeer Captured by Tess Szamatulski

A very broad collection of clone recipes, including a lot of unusual (but excellent) beers - strong belgians for example. Be aware that they only use Weast yeast, it is really written for the extract brewer, but does have all grain recipes for each. I haven't tried the recipes yet ...
