This is the first lens I bought after getting the D5000 with the standard 18-55mm kit lens. Great low-light performance, super sharp, focuses quickly and takes great photos.

You'll definitely want extra batteries for your camera and an extra charger is helpful for traveling or keeping one at home and one at work or with you at all times. This accessory kit comes with a good-quality tripod and some cleaning accessories that will come in handy as well.

A remote is handy when you want to do long exposure night shots on a tripod, or a self-portrait.

Sandisk SD cards work well. I like the 2GB or 4GB cards. You can buy larger cards but I'm a little paranoid -- even high quality flash cards will eventually fail from repeated use and I'd hate to lose all my shots from a vacation or trip because one 8 or 16 GB card bit the dust! By swapping out 2 or 4 GB cards as you fill them, you minimize the risk.
