The Stuhrling Brand Story

With dedication to the heritage of Swiss watchmaking, Stuhrling Original timepieces appeal to the most discriminating taste at reasonable prices. The company has roots dating back to the 1800's when Switzerland emerged as the global leader in watchmaking. Stuhrling Original remains committed to its mission of preserving the high standards set in Switzerland manufacturing all of their fine timepieces in their Swiss-owned factory! Each and every model conveys an inimitable story with extraordinary style. You'll find heirloom selections for both men and women that even the most astute watch collector will cherish and admire.

In the workshops of Stuhrling Original, the unit specializing in mechanical movements, component selection, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and testing creates horological wonders entirely under vigilant attention of Swiss ownership and supervision. It is these workshops that produce the mechanical engines that are famous for meeting the highest existing criteria in there category. Starting with the main plate, the assembly process is performed in several consecutive stages up until anchoring the balance spring, which sets the watch into motion. Assembling a Stuhrling Original mechanical automatic movement comprises no less than 30 checkpoints, spread throughout the assembly process. Adjusting the angle of lift of the pallets, centering the balance-spring, poising the balance are just a few examples of these checkpoints; of which all are designed to enhance the performance of each movement. The movement must meet no less than seven criteria, including a mean variation in rate which is the highest standard in the industry in its class.

Stuhrling Original cases are distinguished by their technical complexity, their high-end aesthetic appeal and the quality of their finish. The watch cases are made from antimagnetic 316L surgical grade stainless steel, an extremely sophisticated alloy designed to stand up to intensive use. The rough parts, known as "middlecases" are blanked from a metal bar using a high-performance press. They then undergo eight successive stamping operations of a strength increasing gradually from 20 to 85 tons. Before each swaging operation, the middlecase is refired at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, so as to temporarily reduce the hardness to a total stamping pressure of more than 400 tons. Finishing the cases then calls for fifteen polishing operations, all performed by hand alternating with nine baths guaranteeing immaculate cleanliness. Other components of the cases, such as rotating bezels or rider tabs also require a meticulous finish. The components of the cases are finally assembled by hand and rigorously tested.

Each Stuhrling Original dial has been designed to enable optimal read-off at a glance, while adding an element of artistic design. Stuhrling Original's dials are blanked from a brass plate and two cylindrical feet are soldered below to ensure security with the movement. Polishing operations, creating special effects through the use of vintage hydraulic German machines, and electroplating are just some of the more than forty operations required to make most StuhrlingOriginal dials. The transparent protective coating is applied in an immaculately clean environment before the various inscriptions are transfer printed using a gelatin pad which takes an impression from an inked block. On many of the dials the hour markers are either individually applied by hand or embossed into the dial and then topped with a special dye. The application of Super Luminova is performed by artisans with a nozzle pen connected to a high-pressure pipe which calls for intense concentration. Once finished, each dial undergoes careful aesthetic scrutiny under extreme magnification, as well as technical testing, to ensure it complies with all predefined dimensions and specifications.

Through meticulous labor, rigorous testing and examination of each timepiece by expert horologists, the vision of the Stuhrling Original timepiece is brought to life inside our workshops, where...

Beautiful Watch With Attention To Detail!5
I've always been fascinated by a skeleton watch, seeing all of the tiny moving parts in action is fun and amazing. I've wanted an automatic watch for a long time because I don't like having to replace the batteries in my watches every year. As a matter of fact, I stopped wearing watches a couple of years ago for that reason, and just use my cell phone to check the time when I'm out and about.

Now, combine an automatic skeleton watch with my favorite "rose gold" color (it's so flattering to all skin tones), and add the adorable heart cut-out, well the combination is just irresistible! Then, as if that wasn't enough (besides the well known quality brand of Stuhrling), they add two extra bands and I was lucky enough to find it on a one hour Gold Box Lightening Deal, it was serendipitous!

I quickly did my due diligence research on pricing, and reviews, and not only does Amazon have best price, every place that I found this watch, it only came with the brown band. Amazon is the only seller I could find that offers this wonderful set with the 2 additional quick change bands, so that makes this deal even more fantastic.
FYI, at Overstock dot com there were 49 reviews with 100% recommending the watch, and a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars!

BTW, the watch come in several other color combination's (with one band) if you don't like the rose gold. Some of them are sold on Amazon.
I got this from the Stuhrling website:
109.1215A4: Stainless Steel Case with Pink Dial, Pink Hands & Markers on a Pink Strap
109.1215C6: Stainless Steel Case with Cobalt Blue Dial, Baby Blue Hands & Markers on a Midnight Blue Strap
109.1235E31: 23K Yellow Gold Plated Case with Champagne Dial, Brown Hands & Markers on a Bronze Strap
109.1245E14: 16K Rose Gold Plated Case with Copper Dial, Black Hands & Markers on a Brown Strap
109.1215H2: Stainless Steel Case with Red Dial, Black Hands & Markers on a Red Strap

OK, on to the watch. So far, it stays "wound" if you wear it, and it keeps time fairly accurately. In 5 days, it has been a minute or two slow. I didn't expect it to be as accurate as a quartz watch, and the trade off of not having batteries to replace is worth it to me.

If you don't know how the automatic self-winding mechanical movement works, it's through kinetic energy - the normal movements of your wrist should keep it "wound". It stores the energy in the spring, and the manufacturer claims a 34 hour power reserve. I haven't tested that.

Notes: The rose gold color is more coppery than depicted in the photos. It's almost the same color as the face.
If you click on the photos & zoom in, you can see all of the wonderful details and engravings on the face and the movements.
The photo of the watch in the box is the most accurate color of the watch bands, pale gold, brown and black.
The watch bands are a fine satin twill bonded to the leather, and that's what they look like, fabric, not leather. They should easily fit about a 6" to 7.75" wrist (maybe larger if you punch another hole in the band), and are very comfortable, and easy to change. The matching rose gold buckle has the Stuhrling symbol engraved on it. The onion dome crown is beautiful, and I like that it is in the 4 o'clock position, instead of the usual 3 o'clock.
Because of the heart cut out, with the moving parts, it's not quite as easy to read.
The watch and bands are bigger than I like, but it is not overbearing, and my wrists are on the small side. The case is about 1.4" diameter, and 1/2" thick.
When you set the watch turn the hands counter-clockwise, rolling the dome towards you.
The presentation box is very classy, this set would be a wonderful gift for anyone to receive.

Bottom Line: This is a beautiful, unusual, well made watch set at a great price.

P.S. Disclaimer: I did see in the box, that they will give you an additional year on the warranty (total of 3 years) if you write a positive review. That truly had no bearing on this review. I was going to write this review before I saw the bonus. The reason I wrote my review today was because it's on sale & I thought it would make a great Valentines gift. Since there is only 1 other review, I felt I should add mine. I know how important it is to have multiple reviews on products, they really help me.

Update 5/16/09: Still LOVE the watch. It brings a smile every time I look at it. I even bought some additional 18mm bands with quick release pins on eBay, and a 16mm "rose gold" quick-deployment clasp that matches the watch perfectly even though it isn't the Stuhrling brand (I couldn't find any in 16mm size).

Only real complaint, after only a few days about 1/4" area near the top of the bezel, seems to show some wearing off of the rose gold plating. I will probably contact Stuhrling about it.

I've also noticed that some people don't realize that you can also wind the watch the old-fashioned way to keep it wound. It's fun to watch the spring get tighter, and because you can see it, you don't have to worry about "over winding" it. I wind it before I start wearing it, and if I'm going to wear it the next day, I wind it again before I go to sleep.

beautiful watch, but...3
what a beautiful watch! I bought it last month and I really like the way you can see the internal workings of the gears while you're watching it. I agree with other reviewers in saying that the watch face was a bit large (it took up the whole wrist area!), but that wasn't a huge factor in my decision to return the watch. My problem with this watch is it just couldn't keep time! Every morning I had to set the time before I could put on my watch. After wearing it all day long it kept time just fine, but after I took it off in the evening it would eventually stop during the night. What good is a watch that doesn't keep time? I mean, it's a self-winding watch so how long are you supposed to wear it before it manages to keep time for a 24 hour period?! I'm sorry to say I had to box it back up and return it to Amazon. Again, the presentation of this watch is really impressive, but if you need to know the time of day it might not be the right watch for you!

Cute watch, Reasonable price, Neat pieces4
I just got it today and really like it. It is not as big as I thought. My wrists are small but I don't think the watch is unsuit. Also, I think it suits well for casual clothes and dresses but may seem too big and not suit for formal clothes like suit or evening dress. The details are great, both the watch case and the bands. It works fine. I think it worth my $100 (gold box deal). It is automatic, so the heart will stop if you don't let it stay by your side..so cute^^

I want to give it 5 star but I give 4 because I feel really upset because of Amazon. (I know it's about the seller not the watch itself, but...) I bought a NEW watch, not used or refurbishment, but I got a watch that seem not 100% new. Plastics covered the watch case are detached, the box shows signs that someone before me try so hard to take the watch out of the box. (T_T) But the watch works fine and I like it so I will keep it.
