Customer Reviews

canon L 3
Ok it's built very well and is weather sealed & has a good range 24-105 and IS etc but my copy was very soft and had horrible vignetting on ful frame 5D so i returned it amazon gave me a REFUND .
I wish canon had better quality control at this price ok i could send it off to Canon but I don't expect that with a $1200 lens!

Great lens, silly kit3
This is a truly silly "kit" to go with a great lens. The filters appear to be the LOWEST quality Hoya makes (green box--made in the Philippines). Many reputable photo dealers won't even sell the green box filters. One can buy that set on eBay for $45 or less.

The "collapsible rubber lens hood" is pretty much useless--the 24-105mm f/4L lens, like all Canon L lenses, should come with its own hood! The dealer MAY have removed the Canon hood (i.e., in order to sell it separately), so take that into account--ask to be sure. (47th Street Photo has a good rating at [...], as well as here on Amazon.)

The dinky "tabletop tripod" is intended for point-and-shoot cameras and almost surely will not securely support a DSLR with this lens--I have the same "tripod" that came with a mini-DV camcorder and it immediately collapses under my 30D with a lighter lens.

I'm not even sure about the cleaning kit: some cleaning fluids are not advisable to use on quality multicoated lenses--they can smear and leave a residue. I've bought a LOT of used lenses and filters over the past 10 months: quite a few had residue from "cleaning"--it's easy to tell, as the residue is smeared into circular arcs.

Big Kahuna of normal zooms!5
This is the big Kahuna of normal zooms. It's exceedingly well made and sharp as a tack. It swept me off my feet and displaced my oft and long used companion, the EF 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM. I love the range, ultra fast AF speed, sharpness, contrast and feel of this lens. Amazingly sharpness and contrast at 50mm F4 are better than my EF 50 1.4 USM at F4. Sure, it suffers a little light fall-off wide open at the short end in FF (but not on crop bodies), but you'll never notice it unless you shoot blank white walls or clear blue skies wide open. And what fool does that? Normally you stop down for sweeping blue sky landscapes for more DOF. Yes I do shoot it wide open in low light, but light fall-off isn't noticeable in dark interiors or city streets.

It balances perfectly on larger bodies such as the EOS 3 or 5D but is front heavy on smaller cameras such as Rebels.

Highly recommended serious amateurs, doctors, lawyers and world trekkers. Not recommended for those wishing to travel light, extreme sports photographers or those with a feeble credit card limit.
