Works great with Macs!
Just an FYI for Mac users, this unit works just fine with Macs even though it does not specifically list support. I got it for the DVD-RAM capability and Mac OS X (10.4.x) supports that feature natively, so no problems there. I also removed it from the case and installed it in my G5 Tower to replace the stock drive. To be clear, I did not need to remove it, it works as is off the USB 2.0 port, I just wanted less cable clutter. Anyway, works just fine as an internal drive, although I haven't checked booting yet. The stock drive was a Pioneer also, so that may be one reason for good native support.
From what I understand DVD-RAM is one of the few truly archival mediums and this is one of the few Mac compatible (although not officially) DVD drives with DVD-RAM read/write support built in.
excellent addition
i have used this non-stop since its purchase and it is great - no bad dvd's or cd's - just to think i bought the refurb for $39 - great product and an even better deal
Pioneer DVD/CD Writer Works!
Purchased this device to rip 800 cd's in my cd collection. My Laptop only has a 24x burner and it would take forever to burn this collection. The Pioneer more than adequately burned the entire collection in half the time it would take for my laptop to do the same job! There were several negative comments I saw that were relevant to the Nero Software. I loaded the Nero Essentials CD and the software worked fine. Bottom line, when you try to burn a CD on this Pioneer drive, it will need the Nero Software and the Nero software works fine if you install it correctly. The Nero Software has its own media player as well. However, the Media player is not the easiest to navigate. Still - it works!
Overall, I'm very pleased with the performance of this device for the price. It does exactly what I purchased it for - Rip & Burn CDs at a very fast rate 52x! If you have a Desktop PC, simply buy an IDE Drive that has the same specs. I unfortunately detest laptops and am stuck with a slow drive.
