Kids' Music--The Stuff I Like That They Like.

Fascinating CreaturesFascinating Creatures by Frances England

Someone commented that this album is like Lilith Fair for little kids. It is really enjoyable music, with a couple of songs that get stuck in your head--but they're so good you don't mind. If someone played her music on our local indie station, it'd fit right in.
Sing-A-Longs & Lullabies for the Film Curious George (Jack Johnson)Sing-A-Longs & Lullabies for the Film Curious George (Jack Johnson) by Jack Johnson
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.42
Fantastic music that just happened to be used for the Curious George movie. This cd never leaves our cd changer.
Holiday Songs And Lullabies [CD on Demand]Holiday Songs And Lullabies [CD on Demand] by Shawn Colvin
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $0.96
Beautiful music--easily my favorite "kids" cd. It has a few Christmas songs on it, but you could play the cd any time of the year. I'm not a regular fan of Shawn Colvin--I just love this cd. It's gentle, lovely, perfect music.
Night TimeNight Time by Dan Zanes
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $4.95
We have all of Dan Zanes' albums (and the rest are listed below), but this is our favorite. It's a little more laid back, and this album has two of our favorite collaborations--"Night Owl" with Aimee Man and "Wild Mountain Thyme" with Dar Williams. "Smile Smile Smile" is another favorite.
Songs I HeardSongs I Heard
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.72
If you grew up with the songs of Annie, Mary Poppins, Willy Wonka, The Wizard of Oz, and The Sound of Music, you'll love this cd. Full-size, energetic, big band productions of these tunes as only Harry Connick could have imagined.
You Are My SunshineYou Are My Sunshine
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.96
Elizabeth Mitchell makes gentle, sunny, happy kids' cds that we just love. This cd is a mix of traditional and newer tunes, and they all fit together in a wonderful little gift of a cd.
You Are My Little BirdYou Are My Little Bird by Elizabeth Mitchell
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.25
I prefer "You Are My Sunshine," but this one is close behind. This cd is the same sort of tone, but has a mix of traditional folk songs and world folk...all done in that same gentle, sunny afternoon-type way.
Catch the MoonCatch the Moon by Lisa Loeb
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.98
Wait...is this an Elizabeth Mitchell cd? Yes it is! One of the reviewers of this cd calls Mitchell's music "fresh and soothing." That's it in a nutshell.
Jazz for Kids: Sing, Clap, Wiggle and ShakeJazz for Kids: Sing, Clap, Wiggle and Shake by Various Artists

Ella singing "Old MacDonald," Louis Prima singing "We Have No Bananas," Carmen McRae singing "When The Red Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along," and (of course) Louis Armstrong singing "What a Wonderful World." A kids' cd with great energy and enough silliness to keep them listenting.
Putumayo Kids Presents: Folk PlaygroundPutumayo Kids Presents: Folk Playground by Various Artists

If you want to try out a little Elizabeth Mitchell, Dan Zanes, and kids' artists (Laurie Berkner, Justin Roberts, etc.), this cd is for you. A very well-done mix of kids' artists and other great musicians (Michelle Shocked, Leon Redbone). It's not sleepy music, but it's not hyper, either. Excellent play-around-the-house music.
World PlaygroundWorld Playground by Various Artists
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.38
This is such a fun album! I've heard a couple of these songs played on the radio (like Manu Chao's Bongo Bong) and never thought of them as kids' music...which is kinda the point, really, when looking for tolerable kids' cds. It's good stuff no matter the intended audience.
For the Kids Too!For the Kids Too! by Various Artists
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $6.25
Benefits kids with neurological disorders, and is a great addition to any stack of kids' cds. A little Ralph's World, a little Matt Nathanson, some They Might Be Giants (good in small doses), some Matthew Sweet...good, good stuff.
Rocket Ship BeachRocket Ship Beach
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $2.75
Let the Dan Zanes' begin! There's a reason I've listed so many of his cds. They're really, really, REALLY good. It's obviously kids' music, but it's done well and it makes you want to sing along with your kids.
Family DanceFamily Dance
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.63
All of his cd's are a great mix of traditional folk, kids' songs, world folk, and original songs. His supporting cast adds a lot to each album, and you'll find songs like "Hokey Pokey" and "Skip to my Lou" are actually (*gasp*) enjoyable in Zanes form.
House PartyHouse Party by Dan Zanes
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.77
More great Dan Zanes! Lively, entertaining music that never gets dopey or Barney-fied.
Catch That Train!Catch That Train! by Dan Zanes & Friends
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.85
His 2006 kids' cd. We're still warming up to this one. It'll definitely get you up, dancing, and smiling, though! If you'd like to hear more of his music, you can see full-length videos from each album at his website.
Putumayo Kids Presents: Celtic DreamlandPutumayo Kids Presents: Celtic Dreamland by Various Artists
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.49
Relaxing music. Putumayo has great "dreamland" collections of world music. It tends to be background music in our house (unlike their world playground music cds), but sometimes background music is a good thing.
Putumayo Kids Presents: Asian DreamlandPutumayo Kids Presents: Asian Dreamland by Various Artists
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.50
My only complaint about this cd is that it's half Japanese music, and ignores Chinese and Korean music almost completely. It's not a very well-rounded "Asian" album, but it is relaxing (and that's the main goal, so hey).
20 Songs Every Kid Should Know20 Songs Every Kid Should Know by Hullabaloo
Buy new: $12.00 / Used from: $31.43
...20 songs every parent should know, too. It's an album that keeps it short and sweet (simple voice and guitar, not much else). It's perfect for kids (or parents) who want to learn the lyrics to traditional kids' songs. Can you remember the words to Yankee Doodle or When the Saints Go Marching In? No? This'll help.
Singable Songs For The Very Young: Great With A Peanut-Butter SandwichSingable Songs For The Very Young: Great With A Peanut-Butter Sandwich by Raffi
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.94
Raffi is definitely a little on the edge of this list. He's so classic, so enjoyable, but also a little "okay boys and girls...let's sing a SONG!"... Still, my kids really enjoy this cd and I like it, too.
Free to Be You and MeFree to Be You and Me by Marlo Thomas
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.25
I grew up with this on vinyl, so of course it isn't anything but enjoyable and charming. I'm sure that's not the case for everyone (it DOES get a little preachy, 70's folky in stretches). Still, though, it's classic. Gotta have it.
Welcome to Ralph's WorldWelcome to Ralph's World by Ralph's World
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $2.80
Ralph's World is a strange bird. Some of the music so so enjoyable, so catchy, and so perfect for parent/kid listening. Other stuff (Peggy's Pie Parlor Polka) will send you racing for the skip button. This album is nice because it comes with a dvd that ALL toddlers love, and it comes with a full-length cd that has my favorite Ralph's song...The coffee song. M-O-M-M-Y needs C-O-F-F-E-E!
Platinum All Time FavoritesPlatinum All Time Favorites by Sesame Street
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.50
Brand new, and kind of like Free To Be You and Me...even when it's obnoxioulsy kid music, it's reminds you of when YOU were an obnoxious kid (and loved these songs). C is for cookie, Bein' Green, The People in Your Neighborhood, and Put Down the Duckie...can't beat Sesame Street.
