Product Description
Do you want the ultimate in power and the convenience of cordless? Black and Decker is the first to bring Cyclonic Action to a Cordless Hand Held Vacuum! If you notice that your hand vac doesn't seem to pick up as much as it used to or it doesn't have as much power as you think it should, it's probably a clogged filter. With the new Cyclonic Action DustBuster, dirt and debris is circulated in the bowl and around the filter, allowing air to pass through the machine with no reduction in suction power. With the filtration system running so efficiently, the DustBuster has more power and more run time than any other cordless hand held vacuum in the marketplace. With the translucent bowl, you can actually see the dirt moving around the filter and you can tell when it's time to empty the collection bin. This 14.4 volt DustBuster also has a Filter Cleaning Wheel that allows you to shake off the fine debris that gets into the filter by merely turning the dial on the unit. No more touching your dirty filter to clean it out. And, because you are enhancing your filtration system by cleaning out the filter, one turn of the dial turns up the suction power by 80%.

With unsurpassed sucking power and the convenience of cordless, Black & Decker's 14.4-Volt Cyclonic DustBuster is a great vacuum to have around the house, shop or office. The translucent bowl let's you see the dirt moving around the filter, so you know when it's time to empty the collection bin. A quick-slide charging base mounts on the wall for easy access and quick response to tracked-in mud, spilt cereal, and more! --Brian Olson

Powerful hand vac, but the charge doesn't last long
PROS ~
* Powerful - picks up my daughters cheerios and little bits of food off the kitchen floor (not to mention all the crumbs out of her high chair)
* Two settings - I use the first one in the kitchen, it works well on the smooth floor, and there's slightly less air blowing out the bottom, so it doesn't blow everything around that I'm trying to pick up. The second, higher and more powerful setting is better for carpets.
* Great for getting the dirt that vaccums can't - like the little strip of carpet where the wall and carpet meet.
* Very easy to empty, just press a button and the clear piece on the front comes off.
* There are two green knobs that turn on either side of the main (white) unit - they turn a brush inside the plastic filter which sweeps away any dust from inside the filter.
* Cordless.
CONS ~
* I disagree with a previous reviewer who said that running the handvac until the battery is dead, and then charging it, will make it hold it's charge longer. When I received mine from Amazon a few days ago, it was dead. I charged it for 24 hours. This morning I used it to pick up bits of food and lint and dustbunnies from under the kitchen table, then used it on a few areas of carpet in my entryway, living room, and hallway, and the charge went dead before I could finish. This handvac is WAY too pricey to have such a short charge.
* As a previous reviewer mentioned, a full charge only last for 12-15 MINUTES. This information is in the product manual, which is ONLY availible when you purchase the handvac. Amazon doesn't post this information as part of the item description which is a BIG inconvenience. I like to get ALL of the areas that need some tidying up at once, not do half, then wait another 24 hours for the handvac to charge, and then finish. In my opinion, this handvac is MUCH TOO expensive to have a full charge that only lasts 12-15 minutes.
Overall, even though the charge doesn't last long at all, the pros outway the cons, so I'll be keeping this one. I'd just caution anyone considering this item as to the dinky charge.
And now, the bad news ...
Well, like most people have reported here, this product works great. Until the battery goes. Then try getting a new one.
I've had my Dustbuster for a year and five months, and the battery's going. So I checked on Amazon for a replacement. They don't have any. So I went to the Black & Decker website to find one. They don't have any. So I called their customer service line. They were closed due to bad weather. Try later.
To their credit, B&D's instruction sheet gives detailed information about disposing of the old battery properly. You really need to do that, folks, it's toxic. Don't throw it in the trash! Think of your grandchildren, if any.
But the Dustbuster instruction sheet is very vague about getting a new battery. It says to check with your authorized service center or call C/S. Replacing the battery, if you could find one, isn't trivial -- you don't just drop it in, you have to take the Dustbuster apart. You need tools. You have to remove several screws, pull on some plastic tabs, etc. It's not hard, but the mechanically-challenged could have a problem.
I finally located a not-so-local dealer who has the replacement battery. It costs $30.40, plus shipping. In other words, the replacement battery costs the same as buying a whole new Dustbuster! Does that make sense?
If I was a conspiracy theorist, I'd almost think B&D was purposely making it hard to replace the battery. Guess they'd rather we bought a new Dustbuster.
Dustbuster CHV1400
I bought this item at Walmart. At first I thought it was too expensive for a Dustbuster. However, this model definitely has much more suction power than any Dustbuster I've owned. It approaches the power of a corded vacuum. I has 2 speeds, and the high speed has no trouble picking up small stuff. It is also easy to clean. Without doubt it is the best Dustbuster yet.
