Product Description

Every devoted Christian experiences periods of time when God seems far away, when the light of His face seems to have turned away and left His child to fumble in the darkness. During periods of spiritual blackout, when God seems to be silent, we feel as if we’ve been put on hold: We wait and wait for God to get back on the line. We know it will be wonderful when the light comes back on and drives away the darkness, but we want it now—not later. Award-winning writer Cecil Murphey has journeyed through this darkness three different times during his many years following Christ, and each time was more difficult than the last. He suggests that believers have three choices when the lights go out: (1) Give up, (2) examine ourselves for sin or failure, or (3) accept that God’s face is hidden with His purpose in mind. In When God Turned Off the Lights, readers will learn how to make the most of their time on hold by pondering the mysteries of God’s character, confident that He will turn the lights on once again.

Customer Reviews

Truly a helpful book5
When God Turns Off the Light is a deep and personal story of the author, a dedicated Christian, who suddenly falls into a time of spiritual emptiness. He feels as if God has turned His face away. It is a thoughtful look at the feelings and thoughts of someone who believes he has been left in the "darkness" and a look at the verses in scripture about this very subject.

There is neither condemnation nor accusations of lack of faith. Instead, this book helps the Christian walk through some of the reasons an individual may feel separated from God. It also explains that sometimes God allows this to happen to even the most faithful in an effort to cause them to grow.

Beautifully written and packed with relevant Scripture verses to help the struggling Christian. The author brings us through his painful time and into his victory. He also shares how the silence of God helped him to grow even more.

As someone who has been through darkness, I believe this is the best book I have ever read for a suffering Christian. I highly recommend this book, and I thank the author for sharing his experience.

Comforting and Encouraging!5
If you have ever felt like God was nowhere near or you were alone in total darkness, or want to be prepared for such a feeling, you need to read Cec Murphey's new release. The subtitle is "True Stories of Seeking God in the Darkness," and the book tells of Cec's personal journeys on three different instances over the years as he sought to follow Christ. I highly recommend it, whether you've had these experiences or not.

Hang on--even in the darkness5
I kept my pen in hand while reading Cec Murphey's, WHEN GOD TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS. As I look back over my underlinings, hearts, and exclamation points, I see how many times Murphey's journey hit home with me--with my own dark night of the soul. It's so refreshing to read about an imperfect Christian--one who has faults, fears, and failures. One a lot like me.

Murphey brings hope that beyond the edge of darkness (that dismal gray place where you can't see/experience/feel God), we will find Light again. It's an honest look inside a true giver--an author who shares his heart and soul, even the not-so-pretty parts. WHEN GOD TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS reads as though Murphey pulls back the curtain and reveals those same scary things in his life that hound me. Then he offers me his flashlight and steady footprints to follow.
