![]() | Canon HV20 3MP High Definition MiniDV Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Buy new: $1,236.48 / Used from: $470.00 This adapter is designed for the excellent picture-quality Canon HV20, but many small camcorders can use the same design, perhaps with a few tweaks to length & step-up rings.
The HV20 is a hi-def camera, so get the vibrating Daniel's GG-holder.

![]() | Adorama Step-Up Adapter Ring 43mm Lens to 55mm Filter Size
Buy new: $6.95 1. First, you probably need a step-up ring to connect the coming 55mm achromat to your camera, since small cameras have smaller diameter lenses.
If you are using a Canon HV-20, you need this one: 43mm-55mm.
Some other small video cameras may require a 37mm-55mm or another size.

![]() | Opteka 10x HD² Professional Macro Lens for 55mm Digital Camera Lenses -
Buy new: $29.95 2. You need to use a macro lens [achromat] next in the stack to allow your camera to focus close enough to get the ground glass image in focus. It also helps correct barrel distortion.
Daniel used to make a better one with less chromatic aberration, but he's currently out, so this is his recommendation.
You can also build your own out of an old pair of binoculars & lens filter rings.
|
![]() | Opteka 55mm High Definition² Multi-Coated Circular Polarizing Glass Filter
Buy new: $12.95 3. You need a circular polarizer without the glass, so buy the cheapest one or even find a cracked one.
This will allow you to rotate the focusing screen into alignment with your video camera sensor. If you are careful in the installation, you may get away without one of these.
|
![]() | B&W B+W Step-Down Adapter Ring From Filter 58MM To Lens 55MM - B&W 65069456
4. You next need a 55mm-60mm step-up ring to connect the 55mm polarizer rings to the 60mm Canon Eos extension tubes.
|
![]() | Canon Focusing Screen Ee-A (Precision Matte) for EOS-5D Digital SLR Camera
Buy new: $34.95 6. The ground-glass [GG] is where the lens projects an image for the video camera to record.
This is one of two Canon screens you can use in Daniel's GG-holder. The other is the Ee-S: easier to focus, but loses more light. Both are actually condenser lenses, to reduce image vignetting.
Other GG options include other Daniel models using Nikon screens, DIY wax screens, & custom ground glass.
|
![]() | B+W 49mm UVA (Ultra Violet) Haze MRC Filter #010
Buy new: $37.00 7. Seal your new screen now to protect against dust or youll be sorry! You need a 49mm UV filter to glue inside the Daniels vibrating GG-holder.
It should be multi-coated, not cheapo, or you'll get internal reflections. This one is a bit spendy.
The GG-holder & motor plate sit inside the x-tube's bayonet lens mount. Or use 55mm if you want to mount it inside an x-tube for a static holder.
|
![]() | Adorama Nikon Lens to Canon EOS Body Adapter
Buy new: $44.95 8. Last, mount the lens to the adapter stack. You can use other brands of extension tubes if you use lenses other than Canon's, but then you have to figure out all the parts & distances through trial & error, then stick to one brand of lens...
Better to just use the Eos tubes & get a lens mount adapter[s] to match your lens brand[s].
You should be able to find them for $10-20 each.
|
![]() | Nikon 35mm f/1.4 Nikkor AI-S Manual Focus Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
Buy used from: $824.95 9. Use prime lenses like 20, 28, 35, 50, 85, 105, 135mm at f/1.2, 1.4 or the cheaper ones at 1.8. Slower than f/2.8, youll get hotspots or vignetting. Shoot at 1/50 or slower, wide open.
Use any brand. Old Nikons are performers, small & have manual aperture that will work on your new adapter.
Auto-aperture lenses work, but you have to put them back on the SLR body to change the ap.

![]() | Manfrotto 293 Telephoto Lens Support - Replaces 3420
Buy new: $73.45 10. Like the commercial ones, this adapter is long. It's only attached to your video camera by the flimsy plastic threads at the end of the built-in lens, so the adapter will shear off if you don't support it.
Use a tele-lens support like this one recommended by Daniel, or you can use rods or a DIY solution.
|
![]() | Cavision Universal Carbon Fiber Rod Support System for MB410E, with Two 25cm Long, 15mm Diameter Rods.
Buy new: $139.95 You can use a rod system to support your camera & adapter. This one is pretty cheap.
You can even build a set of rails yourself with 15mm rodstock & homemade or Daniel's rail supports.
Rails are better than the tele-lens support if you want to add accessories like a shoulder support, matte box, hand grips, monitor, follow-focus, etc.

![]() | S/S Metric Flat Washer DIN-125A M2.5 2.7mm ID x 6.0mm OD x .5mm Thick (Pack of 100)
Tolerances on this cheap camera gear aren't all that one could wish.
If you can't focus on infinity, you might need a couple washers about .5mm thick & roughly 7mm in diameter to tweak the distance between your HV20 camera & the screen.
Put them around the joining screws between the motor plate & the GG-holder plate. Usually one on each side is enough. Think about this before you glue anything!
|
![]() | Henkel 01-82196 Loctite 2-Gram Super Glue Gel
Buy new: $3.99 You can use Superglue to hold some of the parts together, like the 49mm UV filter into the GG-holder & the GG-holder into the bayonet mount of the extension tubes.
Superglue gas is pretty aggressive, though, so don't use it on your focusing screen or it will eat it.
|
![]() | Stanley GR20K Trigger Feed Hot Melt Glue Gun Kit
Buy new: $13.19 Hot glue works well for this project, since it won't eat any of the parts.
Use hot glue to mount your screen in your GG-holder, to stick the motor to the motor plate & to attach the soldered phone cable to the extension tube so it won't pull off.
|
![]() | Dremel 750-02 Minimite 4.8-Volt Two-Speed Cordless Rotary Tool
Buy new: $26.44 / Used from: $23.99 A Dremel tool will be useful for drilling the small hole in the #2 extension tube ring for the GG-holder motor wire to pass through.
Any drill with a small enough bit will work, though.
|
![]() | Black & Decker CI500S Dual-Temperature Soldering and Craft Iron
Buy new: $29.99 You'll need a soldering iron to connect the vibrating GG-holder motor wires to a piece of phone cord cable, & the cable to a battery case at the other end.
|
![]() | American Terminal AT-31604 60-40 Rosin Core Solder (4 Ounces)
Buy new: $8.99 You'll need some solder for the phone cable ends.
