JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It MattersJFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters by James W. Douglass
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $21.89
Required reading to be a citizen of the world. JFK turning America towards peace. He was killed by the CIA. Our government chose to cover it up rather than to blame the USSR/Cuba. The only other option was the truth ... the CIA did it.
The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest UniversityThe Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University by Kevin Roose
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $13.54
If you read anything this year, read this. This is a true story by an amazing kid. I consider myself more of an atheist than a fundamentalist ... this book helped me understand and have empathy for the nutty fundamentalists.
The God DelusionThe God Delusion by Richard Dawkins
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $6.38
Newton, Darwin, Einstein, Dawkins. Richard Dawkins is the most important scientist of our generation. People think that all religions are crazy (except for their own). We are brainwashed into bizarre mythology, nutty beliefs, and swear ourselves to to falsehoods based on faith. Before we've had the courage to question our own beliefs, we sell our own children into the same lunacy.
The Quiet GameThe Quiet Game by Greg Iles
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
This is my favorite Greg Iles book (but Spandau Pheonix was an awesome debut). The Quiet Game is a great story about race relations in the south ... and the evil of silence. Great characters ... great writing.
A Short History of Nearly EverythingA Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $5.49
Scientists were the rock stars of the 18th and 19th century. This should be required reading for all science students (and teachers like me).
Genghis: Lords of the BowGenghis: Lords of the Bow by Conn Iggulden
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.73
Start with this. Genghis Kahn will become your hero. As good as this book is (and is is great), your reward will come with the next two in the series. I read all three in a two week period.
Genghis: Birth of an EmpireGenghis: Birth of an Empire by Conn Iggulden
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.93
How can a ruthless killer become a hero to the reader? Read this (after Lords of the Bow).
Child 44Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
The first book by Tom Rob Smith and it is powerful, strange, scary, and realistic. Survival in the USSR ... not a pretty picture. Quoting Springsteen ... What if what you do to survive Kills the things you love Fear's a powerful thing, baby It can turn your heart black you can trust It'll take your God filled soul And fill it with devils and dust
Genghis: Bones of the HillsGenghis: Bones of the Hills by Conn Iggulden
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $11.97
Genghis continues to ride and conquer. A forgotten chapter in world history (not white, not western European). Conn Iggulden will continue this fascinating series - book 4 - with the adventures of Kublai Kahn. (hopefully).
True Evil: A NovelTrue Evil: A Novel by Greg Iles
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
Serial Killer ... well-developed characters ... page-turning, can't put it down, read it all night ... you get the idea.
Mortal FearMortal Fear by Greg Iles
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
Online porn, blood, and mystery ... and again, great writing.
Turning Angel: A NovelTurning Angel: A Novel by Greg Iles
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
Forbidden affair (successful older man - teenage girl) ... and the girl is murdered ... in Natchez ... same location as "Quiet Game" (read "Quiet Game" first).
Drunkard: A Hard-Drinking LifeDrunkard: A Hard-Drinking Life by Neil Steinberg
Buy new: $11.70 / Used from: $1.25
Sun Times columnist does a tell-all about his drinking problem. The story is interesting and the writing is fantastic. Can drinkers have a good time without alcohol? Can drinkers overcome alcohol without "God"? ... 7 of the 12 steps of AA involve God.
Sleep No MoreSleep No More by Greg Iles
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
A chilling tale of infidelity and past lovers ... supernatural but smart.
World Without EndWorld Without End by Ken Follett
Buy new: $12.87 / Used from: $6.67
Not as good as the classic ... "Pillars of the Earth" ... but still Kingsbridge, still the town of Tom and Elaine ... same cathedral ... same magic.
Night FallNight Fall by Nelson DeMille
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $3.75
I loved this book even though my expectations were low (unlike DeMille's "Gatehouse" ... high expectations and a real disappointment). Unlike other readers, I thought the ending was a good one.
Ordinary HeroesOrdinary Heroes by Scott Turow
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
So you think you know your parents ??? Could parents have histories that they do not reveal to their children? Great mystery ... great WWII stuff.
Outliers: The Story of SuccessOutliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell
Buy new: $11.75 / Used from: $12.00
No one does it alone. You've got to work real hard (10,000 hours), be born at the right time, have talent, have parents that nurture your talent, ... it's a combination of advantages ... luck, opportunity, talent, teachers, enthusiasm, and HARD WORK.
The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How.The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How. by Daniel Coyle
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $14.00
This book explains why certain places become "hotbeds" of talent ... and it is NOT because of something in the water. It is all about "ignition" ... better to light a fire than to fill a pail. It is all about effort ... failing, fixing, failing, fixing. All coaches, teachers, and parents need to read this.
Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, BALCO, and the Steroids Scandal that Rocked Professional SportsGame of Shadows: Barry Bonds, BALCO, and the Steroids Scandal that Rocked Professional Sports by Mark Fainaru-Wada
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $0.01
If you don't read "Game of Shadows" and "American Icon", keep your mouth shut about PEDs in sport. These two books will convince you that athletes who are cheaters and liars should be shunned.
American Icon: The Fall of Roger Clemens and the Rise of Steroids in America's PastimeAmerican Icon: The Fall of Roger Clemens and the Rise of Steroids in America's Pastime by Teri Thompson
Buy new: $17.79 / Used from: $7.45
Roger Clemens is a liar, cheater, and former national hero. Like all wrong doings, the cover-up is worse than the crime. This should be read in conjunction with "Game of Shadows.
Busted: The Rise and Fall of Art SchlichterBusted: The Rise and Fall of Art Schlichter by Jeff Snook
Buy new: $17.96 / Used from: $20.99
Art Schlichter was on top of the world ... an all-time great at OSU ... #4 NFL draft choice. However, he spent 10 years in jail for writing bad checks to fund his unbelievably out-of-control gambling addiction (lost 1.5 million). What I found most amazing was how this guy could have been so self-destructive without alchohol and drugs. He accomplished it all with total sobriety.
Blood Memory: A NovelBlood Memory: A Novel by Greg Iles
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
Cat Ferry is a great character. Greg Iles is a great writer. The story is complicated and smart. Read it.
When the Lion FeedsWhen the Lion Feeds by Wilbur Smith
Buy new: $13.00 / Used from: $7.72
Garry and Sean ... Kane and Abel ... Rich Man Poor Man ... the real star is Wilbur Smith, one heck of a writer.
One Second AfterOne Second After by William R. Forstchen
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $11.74
Similar to the S.M. Sterling books (electronics and firearms inoperative) ... but One Second After brings it home to "normal" people. An EMP attack (possible) causes all electronics to be obsolete ... we are forced back into the middle ages without the knowledge to deal with it. Without electronics, we are screwed.
The Illustrious Dead: The Terrifying Story of How Typhus Killed Napoleon's Greatest ArmyThe Illustrious Dead: The Terrifying Story of How Typhus Killed Napoleon's Greatest Army by Stephan Talty
Buy new: $17.82 / Used from: $13.09
Part history part medical science. Mainly ... the ugly nature of war from the standpoint of disease. A good book not a great book.
The Gate HouseThe Gate House by Nelson DeMille
Buy new: $18.47 / Used from: $0.01
This is the worst book I've read in years. It is said that "cool does not age well" ... John Sutter was sooooo cool in "The Gold Coast". John Sutter was a bore in "The Gate House". How can one of my favorite all-time books lead to a sequel that totally sucks? Don't read this.
The Revolution: A ManifestoThe Revolution: A Manifesto by Ron Paul
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $8.66
Both parties are corportate - the system is rigged to the wealthy - as long as people are well fed, they will play the rigged game. We should NOT have military bases in 130 countries. No more war. The federal government is too big & too powerful. Eliminate federal taxes and federal mandates. Most people are Libertarians and don't know it ... they just keep eating and playing the game.
