Course in General Linguistics (Open Court Classics)Course in General Linguistics (Open Court Classics) by Ferdinand de Saussure
Buy new: $15.60 / Used from: $9.71
Part of Lacan's innovation was to add elements of Structuralism to Psychoanalysis, and THE essential (and relatively easy to read) founding text of Structuralism is "Course in General Linguistics" by Ferdinand De Saussure. I recommend highly that you begin here. Learn about the "Signifier" and the "Signified," "Langue" and "Parole," "Paradigmatic" and "Syntagmatic," and all that...
Ecrits: The First Complete Edition in EnglishEcrits: The First Complete Edition in English by Jacques Lacan
Buy new: $18.45 / Used from: $14.28
Start by studying some texts from the notoriously loopy “Ecrits.” You will gain confidence. Lacan's style is like poetry. Start with "The Mirror Stage as Formative in the Function of the I," "The Signification of the Phallus," "The Function and Field of Speech and Language in Psychoanalysis," "Seminar of the Purloined Letter," "The Situation on Psychoanalysis in 1956," and "Function and Field."
Introducing Lacan, 3rd EditionIntroducing Lacan, 3rd Edition by Darian Leader
Buy new: $11.01 / Used from: $3.49
Read a primer now. However, keep in mind that it is only so you can get an "idea" of where things are going. You’ll abandon some of these ideas as you go because these primers can be oversimplified, but it will probably help to read one.
An Introductory Dictionary Of Lacanian PsychoanalysisAn Introductory Dictionary Of Lacanian Psychoanalysis by Dylan Evans
Buy new: $25.70 / Used from: $19.00
Pick this up to aid in your journey. The best way to learn Lacan (at least it was for me), is to read a variety of interpretations from different people, with each person adding something new and different to the sometimes opaque concepts, giving you different readings and angles of the material, thus supplementing your own readings of the source texts. Just what is "Das Ding," again?
The Lacanian SubjectThe Lacanian Subject by Bruce Fink
Buy new: $25.60 / Used from: $20.22
To my mind, Bruce Fink is by far the BEST writer explaining Lacanian theory today. There is no question that you should read all of his books. Start with this one. It focuses on the theoretical and philosophical side. Read all the footnotes- they are essential. The appendices are also vital- includes a list of Lacan’s “symbols” and what they represent, which has been invaluable to me.
A Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis: Theory and TechniqueA Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis: Theory and Technique by Bruce Fink
Buy new: $23.38 / Used from: $29.64
Never forget that Lacanian Psychoanlysis is a clinical practice. This work introduces "praxis:" how Lacan relates to the real world. It is a brilliant book. It talks about the differences between Neurotics, Psychotics, and Perverts. The appendices includes a list of terms (buttonholes, fundamental fantasy, etc) and a list of books and lectures where Lacan and Freud discuss them.
Fundamentals of Psychoanalytic Technique: A Lacanian Approach for Practitioners (Norton Professional Books)Fundamentals of Psychoanalytic Technique: A Lacanian Approach for Practitioners (Norton Professional Books) by Bruce Fink
Buy new: $22.58 / Used from: $18.59
Another essential Fink text. This one also about the clinical side, and talks about such fascinating issues as dream and fantasy interpretation, transference, scansion, and how to "practically" gain access to the unconscious. Read all his footnotes- if you don't you're only getting half the book. A superb book which really opens up Lacanian theory in clear and startling ways.
Introduction to the Reading of Lacan : The Unconscious Structured Like a Language (Lacanian Clinical Field)Introduction to the Reading of Lacan : The Unconscious Structured Like a Language (Lacanian Clinical Field) by Joel Dor
Buy new: $23.00 / Used from: $14.79
THE fundamental cornerstone of psychoanalysis is "The Unconscious," and Lacan said that it was "structured like a language." But what does this actually mean? What is it, and how does Saussurian linguistics come into play. This book delves deeply and clearly into the idea of the Unconscious. The best explanations I've found so far about The Phallus and the Parental Metaphor. As essential as Fink.
How to Read Lacan (How to Read)How to Read Lacan (How to Read) by Slavoj Zizek
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $7.01
Zizek is an unspeakably provocative and enlightening Lacanian. I have never, however, felt that his book were especially good as intros, for he always tweaks and undermines one's assumptions. He is, for sure, my "Subject Supposed to Know." He has published an insane number of books and they're all worthwhile
Does the Woman Exist?: From Freud's Hysteric to Lacan's FeminineDoes the Woman Exist?: From Freud's Hysteric to Lacan's Feminine by Paul Verhaeghe
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $15.00
Lacan once famously said that women "do not exist. Well, which is it: is Lacanian psychoanalysis a patriarchical theoretical system which seeks to subordinate, or at least denegrate, women's positions, or is it one of the most powerful systems to examine patriarchy in any meaningful way? This book supports the latter thesis in a strikingly convincing way.

Buy new: $14.21 / Used from: $12.95
Now it is time to start with the Lacan seminars. Read them in order. They are far less "impenetrable" than the "Ecrits," but equally essential.

Now it is time for the commentaries. Compiled by Bruce Fink, they are filled with very eloquent articles by a plethora of different Lacanian thinkers, includes Zizek, of course, as well as Jacques-Alain Miller, Lacan's heir. This book is on the first two commentaries.

Take a little break now with this DVD of a seminar by Zizek, where one can see how cultural analysis is done using Lacanian theory. THE best Lacan/Zizek documentary, however, is the film "The Pervert's Guide to Cinema." It can only be purchased online. Supposedly there is a "Pervert's Guide to Ideology" in the works as well- can't wait!

Read this seminar next. Fink's "Clinical Introduction" will help with this, as does the end of his "Fundamentals of Psychoanalytic Technique" which talks a lot about psychosis.

Now it is really time to dig in. This is a very close reading of one of the most intense of the texts in Ecrits- namely, the one with all those graphs which look so impressive and intimidating, the "Subversion of the Subject and the Dialectic of Desire in the Freudian Unconscious." Deep reading time, people. This book is shockingly insightful. Part of the “Lacanian Clinical Field” series.

Buy used from: $13.99
This is one of Zizek's first books and it is a great book. It has, for instance, one of the most enlightening descriptions of "dreams" I have ever read, and he also breaks down Lacan's graphs of desire. In his documentary "Zizek!", he said that his four most important works were this one, and...

Buy new: $25.60 / Used from: $19.60
Essential text explicating the common thread running through all Zizek's works -- what Johnston calls the transcendental materialist theory of subjectivity -- which is a critical framework utilizing the German Idealist tradition of Kant, Schelling, and Hegel as informed by the psychoanalytic works of Freud and Lacan.
Ethics of The Real: Kant, Lacan (Wo Es War)Ethics of The Real: Kant, Lacan (Wo Es War) by Alenka Zupancic

Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $10.65
Ethical theory #2. Zizek's Lacanianism has been deeply informed by the radical ethical theory of Alain Badiou. This book is pretty mindblowing: provocative, entertaining, and suprisingly clear and concise reading for a book of continental theory.
Lacan at the Scene (Short Circuits)Lacan at the Scene (Short Circuits) by Henry Bond

Not out yet and haven't read, but looks fascinating. Lacanian analysis of crime scene photos taken from crimes committed in England between 1955 and 1970. Discusses cases using the neurotic, psychotic, perverted psychoanalytic paradigm. Part of the Short Ciruit series edited Slavoj Zizek.
