My friend's son got mites from their nest box....
It is such an amazingly cool idea, and a bird did make its home in the window nest box, to the delight of my friend's son. However, many birds can be hosts to mites, and when the birds leave the nest, the mites look for more food. My friend's son had the box outside his bedroom window, and somehow they got into his room. They can't survive long term on humans apparently, but they do bite humans, release saliva into the bites, and can get into bedding and make children miserable for a few weeks, particularly if your child is allergic to the saliva. I saw the bites/rash and it wasn't pretty.

Anyway, I personally wouldn't risk this. However, if you have a window in a room that isn't used much, or a hermetically sealed window, and are just dying for your child to see how a bird makes a nest, well, this may be just the thing for you. My family, however, will be enjoying bird nests from the ground with binoculars...

I meant to give it 2 stars, not 3, but I can't change that. It got 5 stars for coolness and educational value, and I subtracted 3 stars for possible health risks.
