![]() | Canon VIXIA HF10 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 16 GB Internal Flash Memory and 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Buy new: $725.99 / Used from: $499.00 This is the Vixia I picked up first, and I love it. It looks good, is easy to use, and has lots of features.

![]() | Canon VIXIA HFS10 HD Dual Flash Memory with 32 GB Internal Memory and 10x Optical Zoom
Buy new: $999.00 / Used from: $930.00 This is the top of the line in the Vixia series right now. 32GB onboard memory, an excellent lens, better resolution, face recognition, external mike plug, pretty much all you could ever want for non-professional video. An excellent camera for the budding independent filmmaker;

![]() | Transcend 16 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card with Card Reader TS16GSDHC6-S5W
Buy new: $48.75 Of course, you'll want to have some extra memory, and the transcend 16GB card is the best deal on Class 6 Flash Memory right now. I bought one with the reader and one without.

![]() | Canon 2591B002 DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone for HF/HG Series Camcorders
Buy new: $159.99 / Used from: $140.00 Your images will look great, but the sound is just okay. If you are outside with a breeze or there are lots of distracting noises, you really need an external mike. This one plugs directly into the accessory shoe, and is ready to go. (Note: there is also a stereo miniplug that allows you to connect your own external mike. I like this one because it fits the camera nicely.)

![]() | Canon BP-827 Lithium Ion Battery Pack for Vixia HG 20/21, HF11/10 & 100 Camcorders
Buy new: $124.95 You'll definitely want an extra battery. The battery that comes with the VIXIA will only last you about an hour on the road. This one gives you over 4 hours of extra shooting time. It does stick out the back a bit, but doesn't add much bulk to an already quite compact camera.
|
![]() | Canon 2590B002 CG-800 Lithium Ion Battery Charger for 800 Series Batteries
Buy new: $50.00 You'll probably want a battery charger as well - yes, I know this is all starting to add up. But still, it is useful to be able to charge one battery while you are filming with the other. Also, I like to charge with a charger so as to minimize any unnecessary wear on the camera - use that just for filming and nothing else.

![]() | Canon 1305B001 WD-H37C Wide Converter Lens for HF10, HF100 & HR10 Camcorders
This wide angle conversion lens will help you make the most of shooting in tight spaces. It will capture more of what's close by and will also help to keep a deeper range of details in focus. (Good for the 37mm lens of your Vixia HF10, HF100, etc., and NOT for the 58mm Vixia HFS10 or HFS100)
|
![]() | Canon TL-H37 37mm 1.5x Telephoto Converter Lens for HR10, HF10, HV10, HF100 Camcorders
Buy new: $109.88 / Used from: $103.00 This telephoto lens will allow you to get even closer to the action. The HF10 gives you 12x zoom, and this 1.5x converter will allow you to bring it up to 18x zoom. (Once again, this is good for the 37mm Vixia HF10, HF100, etc. and NOT for the 58mm Vixia HFS10 or HFS100)

![]() | Canon 1272V095 NS-10 Neck Strap for All Camcorders
Buy new: $15.26 You probably also need a neck strap. I'd hate to drop my camera. Plus, I find that the neckstrap helps to stabilize the camcorder if you keep it taut by pulling the camera slightly away from you.

![]() | Case Logic QPB-51 High Zoom Camera/Camcorder Case (Black /Grey)
Buy new: $21.99 If you shell out for your fancy camcorder, you've got to protect it. This is the best bag I've found for my Vixia HF10. It holds the camera, the optional microphone, an extra battery, the plug, extra SDHC cards, the remote. And it protects them well - it is solid on the outside and soft on this inside.

![]() | Manfrotto 680B Monopod (4-SCTN) - Replaces 680 (Black)
Buy new: $60.90 / Used from: $54.99 A monopod is another handy way to add some stability to your shots. Especially when you're zooming, the images can get pretty shaky and the monopod helps. It's no substitute for a good tripod, but if you are on the go a tripod can be too bulky.

![]() | Apple MacBook Pro MB604LL/A 17-Inch Laptop (2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Slot Loading SuperDrive)
Buy used from: $2,100.00 I can't speak for PC users, but it is worth knowing that you really need to have an Intel-based Mac if you want to do anything with AVCHD video. This is the Mac I wish I had.

![]() | Roxio Toast 10 Titanium
Buy new: $78.99 The VIXIA burns files in AVCHD format, and there aren't a lot of good options for editing those directly right now. They need to be converted to an editable format, and as far as I can tell Roxio Toast is the best software for the job (you can do it in iMovie or FCP 6 or Final Cut Express, but it takes a very long time and blows the files up bigger than Toast does).
|
![]() | Final Cut Express 4
Buy new: $174.49 / Used from: $125.00 While iMovie does just fine, for serious editing you really ought to look into Final Cut Express 4. What I really like about it is its ability to work with different file types on the same timeline. (It can handle AVCHD files by itself, and you don't need Toast if you have this.)

![]() | Little Digital Video Book, The (2nd Edition) by Michael Rubin
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $13.99 If you are new to videography or need a refresher course, this is the handiest guide I've found. Michael Rubin has excellent tips for making the most of an on-the-fly approach to home video.
