Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc)Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc)
Buy new: $51.99 / Used from: $30.00
You have to have all nine, so why not start with the original three that includes what many feel is the best: "The Empire Strikes Back." George Lucas wisely chose not to try to write dialog (Say "I have a bad feeling about this." Now repeat 20x.) The hero always seems to be the absurd robot R2D2. It doesn't matter. Just enjoy the vision, and may your metachloridian count be high.
SolarisSolaris
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.86
Psychological sci fi at its best. Solaris, a mysterious, sentient planet creates manifestations. George Clooney (or is he also a manifestation?) is confronted with a thinking, feeling replicant of his wife. What is the nature of being and if you found immortality would you accept it. What might it be like to see the face of god?
Dune (1984) [HD DVD]Dune (1984) [HD DVD]
Buy new: $13.95 / Used from: $6.99
Frank Herbert's brobdingagian vision of a sick galactic empire cleansed by a desert-born jihad is fully realized by David Lynch with the help of an all star cast (e.g. von Sydow, Prochnow, Annis, Sting, Mclachlan). See the Sci fi channel version but buy this one, because when the guild navigator folds space you'll really believe it happened.
2001 - A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]2001 - A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.95 / Used from: $16.48
Too much can not be made of this movie, which starts with a sunrise and transformed the way many people looked at the place of humanity in the universe. Many themes are brilliantly explored: AI,point of view, food. The visuals and music are out of this world, so get it in the best format accessible to you. Mainly, never stop reaching for the monolith.
Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $16.31
Arguably, Fritz Lang's visionary movie started it all. Will the movie's special effects disappoint you? Perhaps. But actually, noone has ever improved on his depiction of the creation of the evil android simulacrum. She is much scarier and more real than anything in "I Robot."
Dark City (New Line Platinum Series)Dark City (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy used from: $1.99
Its a dark psychological vision with chilling, appropriately applied special effects. We are led through the twists and turns of Dark City, an experimental construct of The Others. This is a movie that asks whether we are only the sum of our memories, or something more. Great performances by Rufus Sewell, Sutherland, Connelly, and Hurt.
The Chronicles of Riddick (Unrated Director's Cut) [HD DVD]The Chronicles of Riddick (Unrated Director's Cut) [HD DVD]
Buy new: $13.95 / Used from: $7.50
When your ready for action you need an action hero with limited acting skills- Vin Diesel, some really scary guys with outlandishly cool armor and weapons - the Necromongers, and a hot, slinky lady in a Lady Macbeth role - that would be Tandy Newton. This is that instant, vicarious, gratification we all need. "You keep what you kill."
Blade Runner - The Final Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)Blade Runner - The Final Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $8.50
Man has polluted the earth and is now spreading through the galaxy. Meanwhile back at the ranch slave androids have fought their way looking for a cure for their mortality. There, the best (Rutger Hauer) meets his maker. Harrison Ford, at his best, is the Blade Runner who must decide if he can continue to kill. Faithful enough to Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"
The Complete Matrix Trilogy (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions) [HD DVD]The Complete Matrix Trilogy (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions) [HD DVD]
Buy new: $42.95 / Used from: $37.00
The Matrix trilogy shouldnt have to be explained. Keanu Reeves is a terrible actor, but is a pretty good action hero. This is a series that really opened SciFi to many people. Suddenly so many began wondering why so many foods tasted like chicken.
Total RecallTotal Recall
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $0.50
This incredibly paced, incisive, perfectly drawn movie has everything you would want in your dream vacation on Mars: an ancient alien civilization, a hot girl (Melia), mutants, bad guys, and Arnold. And oh yes, you're a secret agent who gets to save the planet. Or is it just a downloaded vacation dream called "Blue Sky on Mars."
The Fifth Element (Remastered) [Blu-ray]The Fifth Element (Remastered) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $14.95 / Used from: $12.00
So funny, brilliant and engaging. This is rollicking Sci Fi.
The Terminator [Blu-ray]The Terminator [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $18.79
Arnold again proved that he was the ultimate action hero. This movie has everything. The only problem is how very real and scary it seems. Especially mankind's future in a world blasted by conflict with AI. The relentless hunt. You feel it could happen. Also, you will need Terminator 2!
Alien Quadrilogy (Alien/ Aliens /Alien 3 /Alien Resurrection)Alien Quadrilogy (Alien/ Aliens /Alien 3 /Alien Resurrection)
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $23.77
My misgivings about Aliens is that it is a source of nightmares. No sci-fi movie ever scared me more.
SpaceballsSpaceballs
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.95
One of the main purposes of watching all those Star Wars movies is to enjoy this brilliant comedic sendup, which also takes passing shots at Star Trek. Be like Dark Helmet and make those action figures fight, when noone is looking. Proceed at "Ludicrous Speed." We brake for nobody.
