David Koechner (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Bergundy) gives an outsized Farley-esque performance as Lambeau Fields, the worst coach in history, who accepts a position at Heartland State University, home of the hapless football team, the Comebacks, in rural Texas. Will he ignore his wife (Melora Hardin from The Office) in pursuit of victory? Will his rebellious gymnast teenage daughter (Brooke Nevin) choose the team's hotshot me-first player (Jackie Long) or the tutu-wearing quarterback (Matthew Lawrence) whose fumbles are an embarrassment to his father, a Cher impersonator? Will the star player Aceel Tare (Robert Ri'chard) live up to his name (mispronounced by Coach as "ACL Tear")? Will the team make it to the--oy--Toilet Bowl? The Comebacks tackles the inspirational "one last shot" sports movie, but is mostly content to simply quote other sports films and TV shows, including Field of Dreams, Bend It Like Beckham, Stick It, Remember the Titans, Invincible, Miracle, Dodge Ball (itself a sports film spoof), the Friday Night Lights TV series, and Radio (with a mentally challenged character named--wait for it--iPod). Some of The Comebacks is inspired. The Coach, demanding total commitment from his players, insists they flunk their courses and rack up felonies and probations. The fractious team bonds over Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" in a lip-synced, pyrotechnic performance worthy of MTV's Music Video Awards. And Bill Buckner wins the good sports award for a cameo that re-creates his momentous error in the '86 World Series. Despite several fumbles (a 15-yard penalty for the Andy Dick cameo), The Comebacks manages to score enough laughs to cheer Date Movie/Epic Movie fans, although it's not in the same league as Not Another Teen Movie or the Scary Movie films. --Donald Liebenson
Customer Reviews
A parody about Football and sports movies.
I always like a good spoof/parody movie, and tho this one is not a Mel Brooks, Monty Python, Zucker's/Abraham or Wayan's brothers movie, compared to some of the crappy parody movies coming out lately like "Epic Movie" this one is refreshing to see someone else take a puck at a parody type movie.
Unlike Epic Movie, I actually got a few good laughs out of this one.
This one makes fun of Gridiron Gang, Longest Yard errr... other football movies, as well as a few other sports. A few guest appearances by athletes such as Dennis Rodman and that guy from the NIKE adds 10 years ago (I'm Australian, I don't follow NHL)
Also Mad TV's Frank Caliendo appears doing his commentator impressions (such as John Madden)
The end of the movie seemed to be taking it self a bit too seriously, it's about the only thing I did not enjoy during the thing. Sure, it could have been funnier, but compared to some of the recent crap coming out in these parody, slapstick comedies, it's better then those.
Surprisingly Hilarious
I wasn't expecting very much from this movie when I bought it, but I laughed harder than I had in a long time. This is one of those movies where half the people in the room are laughing and the other half are just thinking it is stupid, it is that dumb humor like Dumb and Dumber. If you like that kind of humor, and you know the movies being paradied, you will love this movie like my friends and I did.
Unbelievably Bad Movie
In the battle for worst movie ever, The Comebacks has to be one of the favorites. I think there was one funny moment, but like a traumatic car accident, I have blocked out the specifics of this cinematic wreck. Hard to believe that a movie studio would actually pay to have this made and release it in the theaters. Money flushed down the toilet would be a better investment.
