Madonna's eleventh, and final, studio album for Warner Bros., Hard Candy is a brilliant up-tempo collection that adds a hip-hop beat to the cultural icon's club sensibilities, thanks to collaborations with Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, and Nate "Danja" Hills. Following her previous studio album, 2005's Confessions On A Dance Floor, which debuted #1 and has sold more than 8 million copies around the globe, Hard Candy punctuates the first 25 years of the album career of the most successful female artist in history with a musical exclamation point.

Customer Reviews

Madonna's Candy is Super Sweet5
I just don't get all the harsh reviews because I love this CD. While it's certainly not Madonna's best, it's a fitting cap to her 11 albums with Warner, and I hear a touch of all her past 10 albums on this one. From the bubble-gum pop (Heartbeat) to more the intelligent and complex (Devil Would'nt Recognize You) but the whole thing flows so fluidly, it almost feels like a mini-journey of what Madonna has been all about.

If you're a true fan of Madonna's (like me. I mean this lady IS my Diva and has been since I was 19 when I bought her very first CD), you'll love this album. If you're a snooty music snob with little room to bend, then you should probably pass.

Candy to the Ears and Not Hard to Listen To4
After reading the one to two star reviews on "Hard Candy", I found a common thread to all of them: The entire CD is bland and generic and overproduced, lacking in hooks and melodies. I seriously question whether these people actually did listen to the CD because they do not give specific examples to back their opinion and their review can basically apply to any other CD out there....just replace the name of the artist and the album.

That said, this is my personal opinion of Hard Candy. Granted, when I heard that she is going to have Hip Hop influences in this work I was not thrilled and I do not expect to like this album. A demo of the song "the Beat Goes On" which leaked on the net did not raised my expectations and the tawdry crotch shot of the album cover didn't helped either.

I am a HUGE Madonna fan but I am also one that do not like everything she put out. I found American Life downright boring and Confessions of the Dancefloor was not what it was supposed to be (although it does have a killer song which I listen to practically everday: Get Together).

So I dive into "Hard Candy" with low expectations and I have to admit that it won me over; it is her best album in years. It is pure dance and fun, nothing about the Kabbala, nothing about her mother, nothing about the angst of being rich and famous.

The very first track, "Candy Shop" while not radio friendly, is a funny and ironic song that equates candy and sexual attraction. The second song, 4 Minutes, is a loud mishmash which turn out to be one of the weaker tracks of the CD (and I suspect the one and two star reviewers only heard this song and not the others).

Ultimately the rest of the songs falls into three categories: sweet confections ("Give It 2Me", "The Beats Goes On", "Hearbeat"), funny novelties ("Spanish Lessons", "She's Not Me", "Candy Shop") or bland suckers ("Devil Wouldn't Recognize You")....and this album has plenty of sweets and a minimum amount of suckers. Even then, the suckers do have their own unique flavor.

"Give It 2 Me" is pure slice of Madonna dance heaven, followed by the thumping "Heartbeat". "Miles Away" is a bittersweet semi-ballad. "She's Not me" is another funny song which could have done without the last two minutes, which added nothing to the song except to draw it out with endless repeats. "Incredible" , like "4 Minutes", I consider one of the lesser tracks but it does have an infectious beat and an interesting looping chorus. The "Beat Goes On" as presented here is a vast improvement over the demo...a totally different song, the only thing it retained was the chorus. "Dance 2Night" for me is a throwaway which I didn't find very interesting. "Spanish Lessons" is like "La Isla Bonita" meets "I am Going Bananas". The album closes with "Voices", another catchy sweet confection accompanied by a seductive beat.

"Hard Candy" is the one Madonna album since "True Blue" that I can suck on...I mean listen to in its entirety from beginng to end repeatedly.
