Books I've Read So Far in 2008
By an Amazon.com customer
Cloud Atlas: A NovelCloud Atlas: A Novel by David Mitchell
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $3.05
A challenging but fast-paced and addictive book. Consists of six interrelated stories, each exploring the methods by which one group enslaves another, the oppressor's flawed justifications for so doing, and the power of ideas to change the course of history. Told in a number of narrative styles and genres...definitely one of the most impressive works of contemporary fiction I've read in a while.
The Caine Mutiny: A NovelThe Caine Mutiny: A Novel by Herman Wouk
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $1.42
The most entertaining and moving book I've read in years. Presents both sides of a complex story - there are no villains here, only the gray area that comes with war. One of the best accounts of character change I've ever read.
Life of PiLife of Pi by Yann Martel
Buy used from: $0.35
It started off slowly but eventually became one of the most thematically thought-provoking books I've ever read. To me, the story is essentially a mirror held up to the reader, a test to determine the worldview you hold. Find out as little as possible about this book before you read it. Loved it.
The Old Man and The SeaThe Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway
Buy new: $9.60 / Used from: $0.01
My favorite Hemingway work by far. Simple, powerful prose perfectly matches the personality and strength of one of the most endearing fictional characters I've ever encountered. There isn't a lot of plot here, but it's a compelling read nonetheless.
The Sun Also RisesThe Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

I had mixed feelings about this one. It starts off a little choppy and the characters are hard to differentiate, but it eventually comes into focus as a sad story of disconnection, evasion, longing, and emotional pain. Somehow the last line in the book dramatically improved the way I felt about the entire story.
Animal Farm (Everyman's Library (Cloth))Animal Farm (Everyman's Library (Cloth)) by George Orwell
Buy new: $12.75 / Used from: $5.74
A charming but thought-provoking satire of the USSR, which makes the point that, if revolutions are to succeed and tyranny is to be avoided, the people must learn to chuck their new leaders as soon as the revolution has been accomplished; otherwise the result is totalitarianism.
The Facts Behind the Helsinki RoccamatiosThe Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios by Yann Martel
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $0.01
Loved the first story, the rest were interesting and entertaining but not quite as good. Overall an enjoyable reading experience.
The World According to Garp (Modern Library)The World According to Garp (Modern Library) by John Irving
Buy new: $16.32 / Used from: $6.95
It's hard to say how I felt about this book, since I liked the beginning and loved the end, but I hated the middle. All told, I didn't enjoy this one as much as A Prayer for Owen Meany, but it was still a worthwhile experience thanks to a somewhat haunting ending. It's one of those books where I wasn't sure I liked it while I was reading it, but then I found myself thinking about it weeks later.
The Kite RunnerThe Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
Unbelievable beginning (in a good way), and unbelievable ending (in a bad way). Basically, this one features a thoughtful, well-developed, well-written, emotional set up that devolves into a Lifetime movie and wraps up a little too neatly. With that said, I still enjoyed it.
Enduring Love: A NovelEnduring Love: A Novel by Ian Mcewan
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $1.96
I thought this one was good but not great. Basically, it had an intriguing beginning, great writing, great observations about human nature, and a decent plot, but the characters weren't all that likeable.
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & ClayThe Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.72
In the end I liked this book fairly well, but not nearly as much as I expected to like it. The characters eventually became very real to me, but in many parts the story was either much too long and boring or else hard to swallow. There was some great stuff here, but I wish it had been 200 pages shorter.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1)Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: $18.14 / Used from: $10.77
The book that started it all...and still a lot of fun to read. If you've never tried the Potter books and you're wondering what all the fuss is about, I'd recommend reading at least the first three books before stopping (after I'd read the first two books I almost didn't keep going, but in hindsight that would have been a big mistake). Probably my favorite series of all time.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) by J.K. Rowling; Illustrator-Mary GrandPré
Buy used from: $7.02
I really like this book, but the rest of the series is much better from here on out.
The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's GambitThe Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit by David Eddings
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $4.05
Book one was pretty good...loved it when I was a kid. Basically, it's a very straightforward fantasy based on the Tolkein model but with a more contemporary writing style...haven't made it to the next two yet, but plan to continue reading.
The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 4)The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 4) by Rick Riordan
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $4.47
I continue to enjoy this series more and more with each book. It doesn't quite compare to Harry Potter, in my opinion, but it's well-written, well-plotted, and a lot of fun to read.
Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1)Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $6.04 / Used from: $4.50
I read this one to please my wife. Basically, I thought the first third of the book was fairly intriguing, the second third was a little annoying (too much like a romance novel for my tastes), and the last third was very entertaining. Overall I can see the appeal of the series and I'll probably read the rest of the books at some point.
New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2)New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $6.04 / Used from: $3.85
I thought the beginning was interesting but the ending didn't do much for me.
Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star (Fablehaven)Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star (Fablehaven) by Brandon Mull
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $10.14
Another entertaining installment. I really like the premise behind these books, as well as they two main characters. A lot of imagination and creativity.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time IndianThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $8.75
On the whole I thought this was an insightful, honest, and funny book, although at times the narrative style felt like a dumbed down version of the Catcher in the Rye, some of the scenes felt a little contrived or self-indulgent, and some parents will likely find it too explicit for their kids. Enjoyed it but didn't love it.
AirmanAirman by Eoin Colfer
Buy new: $33.44 / Used from: $18.99
I thought it was a little uneven in a lot of ways, but overall I enjoyed it. It's sort of reminiscent of the Count of Monte Cristo with the added wrinkle of flight. There were a couple of nice plot twists, but it didn't have quite as much scope or depth as I thought it would after a very good setup.
How Not to Write a Novel: 200 Classic Mistakes and How to Avoid Them--A Misstep-by-Misstep GuideHow Not to Write a Novel: 200 Classic Mistakes and How to Avoid Them--A Misstep-by-Misstep Guide by Howard Mittelmark
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $6.71
This was an extremely insightful and funny book...surprisingly vulgar for this genre (which, I must admit, contributed to the humor). Recommended for anyone who's learned the basics but wants to weed out the unprofessional aspects of their writing.
