Story Behind the Book

John Piper’s life-long love affair with his church is evidenced in each of the 140 articles included in Taste and See. Originally, each article was written for his flock at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis . They are sometimes follow-ups to Sunday sermons; sometimes meditations of a pastor’s heart, expressing his longing for the holiness of his congregation. Many of the entries are his own relentless interrogations of a biblical text. A few are colorful anecdotes from a pastor’s daily life—a pastor whose heartbeat for God pulsates through every word.

About the Author
John Piper, Pastor for Preaching and Vision at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis , Minnesota , since 1980, is a respected theologian and author. More than two million volumes of his works have sold, including The Passion of Jesus Christ, Desiring God, Pierced by the Word, The Pleasures of God, and Life as a Vapor. He received his doctorate in theology from the University of Munich and taught biblical studies for six years at Bethel College before becoming a pastor. He and his wife, Noel, have four sons and one daughter.

Glorified and Satisfied
John Piper understands that God designed us in His image as relational beings who thirst, long, desire, and hunger with passion. Piper also understands that "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him" (learned well from the writings of Jonathan Edwards). It is this combination of truths that motivate Piper whenever he speaks and writes. "Taste and See" is no exception. As his subtitle suggests, Piper focuses upon helping his readers to move toward "Savoring the Supremacy of God in All of Life." In other words, don't only know God ratonally (which is vital), don't only obey God volitionally (which is our duty), but pursue Him passionately.

By the way, another reviewer seems to confuse our God-given emotionality with our God-given relationality. Emotions are our God-given capacity to respond to our longings, thoughts, and actions. Affections are our God-given capacity to be motivated by and pursue what our soul craves. Put another way, "We pursue what we perceive to be most pleasing" (from "Soul Physicians" by way of Church history and biblical exegesis). Piper is simply teaching us who we are and how we relate. We can no more cease to follow our affections than the deer can seek to drink from the waterbrook.

Outstanding!
This book is an outstanding help to spur readers on to think more Biblically about God and to ponder the meaning of His Word! I usually don't like devotional type books because many water down the power of God's Word. This book explains the Word and points the reader to the richness of the scriptures and to the greatnesss of God!

Great Essays
This book is a collection of essays of how the author relates on a life that savors God. It is a practical illustration of his more theological books. The essays are basicly meditations on his relationships, something he has read or something he has just preached about. I agree with over 95% of his interpretation of scripture so take this review with that in mind. The book was challenging and thoughtful. There were essays on the nature of love and the nature of suffering. The essays about adopting a child and the essays concern the relationships with his familial members were the most touching. It is just a nice collection of essays of which to read one or two before you go to sleep at night so you can think about God and His relationship with us.
