![]() | Montessori from the Start: The Child at Home, from Birth to Age Three by Paula Polk Lillard
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $6.99 I debated about selecting this book at all let alone having it be the first one. But, I have to be honest about my beliefs. My children attend Montessori Schools, I believe in this philosophy of education and I WISH I had read this book before my first child was born. I would have made wiser choices I think.

![]() | Happiest Baby on the Block DVD by Harvey (MD) Karp
Buy used from: $999.99 I did read the book too but had the MOST FUN watching the dvd with my husband. It's really good to be able to re watch after the baby is born or to share with baby sitters and inlaws so that everyone is on the same page.

![]() | The Happiest Toddler on the Block: How to Eliminate Tantrums and Raise a Patient, Respectful, and Cooperative One- to Four-Year-Old: Revised Edition by Harvey Karp
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $7.60 This is great for ages 1-3. There's also a DVD for this book but I have not seen it.

![]() | 1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12 by Thomas W. Phelan
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.19 This is a SIMPLE method of discipline. Other books try to mimic it or rehash or make the whole process much too complex. Trust me this is IT. It's an oldie but a goodie.
There's also a teen book by the same author I have not read it.

![]() | 1-2-3 Magic (DVD): Managing Difficult Behavior in Children 2-12 [V-1-2-3 MAGIC (DVD)] [DVD] by Thomas W.(Author) Phelan
You should watch the DVD version with your co-parent and any other cargivers (grandparents etc). pause it. discuss. replay. The DVD is the best tool for co-parenting.

![]() | More 1-2-3 Magic: Encouraging Good Behavior, Independence, and Self-Esteem
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $27.25 fyi there are 2 dvd's which = the info found in the 1 book. It's worth it to view both together at separate times. The dvds are just like the book almost verbatem same examples and everything.

![]() | How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $3.03 The secret is: If you know how to speak to your children so they will listen, you don't have to "count them" so much. This author also has a book geared towards teens- i have not read it.
|
![]() | The Pocket Parent by Gail Reichlin
Buy new: $7.88 / Used from: $3.71 This is a good book for ages 2-5- it has very helpful info, simple and logical, but it is more of a reference book on a variety of parenting topics and it does not read well as a "cover to cover" type of book. As a result I forget much of the good advice between it's pages. I don't consider it essential but it's nice to have.
|
![]() | Siblings Without Rivalry: How to Help Your Children Live Together So You Can Live Too by Adele Faber
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $1.47 Another classic- good to read when oldest is around 5 and then reread every year or so for continued clarity. Parents unwitingly strengthen the rivalry. You can prevent a good amount of poor behavior by educating yourself on this topic. You'll be surprised.
