great game - worth buying
Comparing Blokus 3-d to its predecessor Rumis, it's a much better value. The components are better and the grid on the playboard helps keep the pieces in place. You sacrifice 2 templates (Rumis has 6, 3-d has 4), but the quality more than compensates.
The strategy in 3-d is nothing like that in regular Blokus. Instead of connecting at corners, 3-d requires you to always have one face of your piece touching another, making blocking in 3-d more critical and dangerous since you could be completely blocked early in play. 3-d also seems somewhat quicker, so it won't require the same time commitment regular Blokus does.
Other than the lack of two templates, you may be disappointed in the quality for the price, although 3-d is an improvement compared to other Educational Insights games. I have Blokus and Travel Blokus also, and with those you get the feeling the game costs no more than a few bucks to produce but sells for much higher than the quality would normally dictate. It's a shame Education Insights skimps on quality AND charges you such a premium, but 3-d is a step in right direction, so I'm hoping the company realized this and is correcting it.
Overall I'd recommend buying. 3-d has its own uniqueness and challenging aspect. Plus, it's a nice change of pace to regular Blokus due to its quickness and strategy differences.
3D Blokus
We love regular Blokus and decided to try this one since Amazon had it really cheap. The game looked complicated at first, but after reading the instructions it was easy enough to learn the rules and figure out the best strategies. We're still devoloping our skills and find ourselves wanting to keep playing game after game to test out our newest strategies.
Even though the age recommendation is higher than for Regular Blokus, our young kids (ages 9, 7 and 5) are fully able to play and enjoy the game with us (the 5-year-old is a pretty advanced gamer for his age though, so this may not be the case for all kids his age). I love how this game challenges your spatial thinking. It's a very educational for kids, at least.
The only complaint I have is that the blocks aren't designed to "click" together very well, so the structure may collapse if you're not careful. It's frustrating to have taken turns carefully placing your pieces on the board only to have everything fall apart. It's usually impossible to rebuild it exactly the same way. This has happened to us a few of times, we're learning to be more careful but I wish we didn't have to worry about it. The board comes with a turntable so that you can just turn the game around to look at the structure from different angles without having to get up to do so. However, the turntable doesn't turn very smoothly, you kind of have to yank it (it has been the cause of at least one collapse), so we end up just turning the entire gameboard around. No big deal, but since it does have the turntable I wish they'd done a better job with it.
Overall, I think all Blokus lovers will definitely enjoy this game! It's fun, different, challenging, interesting... and addicting! All you'd expect from Blokus. Have fun!
More challenging than original Blokus and Blokus Trigon. Here is why...
You could say that we are Blokus connoisseur's. Our family has the original, trigon, and now the 3D version of the game. We have kids, ages 5 and 8 that often play the game with my husband and I. (We help the 5 year old.) While its fun to play with the kids, my husband and I love to play blokus and will frequently spend evenings, especially in the winter, around the game board together. Best out of three turns into best out of five and so on.
Here is how it is different from the other 2...
The purpose for the other Blokus games is to get rid of all your pieces. The objective of this game is to dominate the game board with your color so that when you look down on the gameboard the person with the most squares of their color showing is the winner. Sounds kind of easy, but it's not. You have to "think outside the box" when playing your pieces because sometimes the most strategic move is not the most obvious. Frankly, I was surprised about how much strategy you have to use to win. In this way it is kind of like chess.
3D is also more challenging/fun because the game comes with 4 different patterns for play and the winning strategy for one pattern is not the same for another.
Another great thing about this game is that it is for 1-4 players. It is just as fun to play the game on your own as it is with someone else or a group of people.
So challenge yourself, stratagize and spend some time having fun with your spouse, kids and friends.
