Product Description

Etched and painted with fire and heat, pyrographed gourds have existed for generations—and now modern tools and solid state woodburning systems have made doing fine detail work simpler than ever. Every amply illustrated page and project teaches and inspires, as a parade of fine artists discuss their tools, reveal their techniques, and above all go through each step of the process. They explain how to pick and prepare a suitable gourd; form delicate lines, spirals, and curves; and work through intricate designs. Among the awe-inspiring projects: a pyrographed Frog gourd, basket, and several pieces of jewelry.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Gourd pyrography is a fancy phrase for the folk art of using heat to carve and scorch gourds. These beautiful objects are found in Nigeria, Kenya, Mali, Ghana, Senegal, China, Peru, Mexico, New Guinea, and the South Pacific. Early methods, involving fire and burning coals, have been superseded by modern tools and solid-state wood-burning systems. Here, four artists walk us through several projects using basic techniques, applying butterfly, floral, and geometric designs to pear-shaped gourds. Another project features a frog among blades of grass, surrounded by a salamander border. With pyrography pen charts, a list of supply sources, and a stunning gallery of works by 50 artists, this work-the author's third on gourd craft-is recommended for large art instruction and craft collections.

Excellent Book on Gourd Art and Techniques4
This book is one of the best for Gourd art ideas.
The photos are fabulous and it gave me tons
of ideas for patterns and techniques on gourd
design and pyrography (woodburning).
No cheap, kindergarten art here.
It looks very professional.
Easy to understand, great for beginners
or even advanced artists.
I highly recommend it.

gourd pyrography3
I thought this book would have more directions in it. Also there were no pictures to copy.
what instructions it did have were ok but there just were not enough of them.

A must have for gourd artists5
This is the definitive book in pyrography on gourds. The photography is beautifully done and the book is chock full of great ideas. If you haven't tried pyrography on gourds - or on anything else, give it a go. It's habit forming!
